Dear Families

"I can" statements: These are a record of the learning outcomes for each student. They will

accumulate over time but clearly show past and future goals for our children. Some families have found it difficult to access these. In order to assist we have organised a demonstration in the library this Friday while assembly is on (3.15). This will take 5 minutes to demonstrate. Trivia Night: What a great night! Congratulations to Penny, Anna, Sara, Kelly and all the other volunteers who made this night happen. It was again terrific to see our community get together and enjoy each other's company (so much so that it was difficult to get the teams back to the trivia!!!!!!) The competition was hot, when teams were on task, throughout the night. Our trivia presenter, Stephen also did a great job of moving the night along and keeping us in line. Thank you also to the Geelong Racing Club who supplied a wonderful venue and to Steampocket for the lovely dinner. Big thank you to Geelong Audit Services who sponsored the evening. If you are in need of an auditor please seek out Alastair who can help you through your problems. Debating: This week our debaters travel to Barwon Heads Primary School to compete in an unseen debate. Each team has 30 minutes to prepare for a debate on a topic. The remainder of the debate follows normal debating format. Both Jason Cole and Rosemary O'Donnell have again worked during lunchtimes to prepare our children- thank you! Welcome: Last week we welcomed 3 new students to our community. We have Courtney and Imo-gen, who are twins joining 4JS and 4JM and Blake joining Miss Robinson's year 5. Mum, Nicole, is also welcomed. As always, our children have extended a warm welcome. Sick children and staff: It is that time of the year when illness, colds and flu are prevalent. At Chilwell we are also great at sharing! We have sent a number of children home of late. Please err on the side of caution when considering sending your child to school when ill. We have also had illness hitting our staff as well. Unavoidably, but again, staff are better at home than school. Mid Year Reviews: Like the children all of our staff annually set goals for ourselves. Over the past 2 weeks we have met in various groups to review how we are going. It is a great time to reflect on the year so far, enjoy the progress and set targets for the remainder of the year. Thank you: This week we would like acknowledge and thank our crossing supervisors who do a great job of looking after our children each morning and afternoon. Committees: We try to give our students as many opportunities to develop leadership and indepenence. This is a very important trait to develop in our students. This year we have: Semester 1 and 2 captains and vice captains. House leaders. Fund Raising Committee: to fundraise for end of year Graduation. Social Service Committee Art Committee Information Technology Committee. Buddies- linking a new Prep to a year 5 student. Junior School Council. Environment Committee. Early to School: It has been very cold the last few mornings so I encourage all families to make sure that children do not arrive too early to school. We have staff on duty from 8.45. Before this the playground is unsupervised. If children need to be at school early please consider Before School Care as an option.

CHILWELL TRIVIA NIGHT

Oh what a night! A huge thank you to all who came to the Chilwell Trivia Night on Saturday night. Your support and enthusiasm has resulted in a terrific fundraising total of just over $12,000 for our school.

Special thanks must also go to our our sponsor, Geelong Audit Services, whose generosity helped run this event. In addition, we’d also like to thank Will Ainsworth from McGrath Estate Agents Geelong for running our Live Auction and managing the bidding frenzy! The Geelong Racing Club must also be acknowledged for being excellent venue hosts.

Behind the scenes the work of Sara Baulch, Penny Whitehead and Kelly Jelenko must also be recog-nised. Events like the Trivia Night take a small army of volunteers who give up their personal time to ensure its success.

Congratulations to the winning team, Trivia Newton-John! Look after the trophy!

Twelve months ago, a few enthusiastic parents put forward a proposal to school council to alter the Fair and add a Trivia Night to our fundraising event portfolio. The main reason was to remove the silent auction from the Fair and host it on a single night where guests would be more focussed on bidding and fundraising. The other bonus was that parents, teachers and friends of Chilwell could enjoy a night out in a relaxed and entertaining environment.

Between the funds raised at the Chilwell Fair $34,000 plus the funds raised at the Trivia Night $12,000 the Fundraising Committee has secured $46,000 for our school. It is an incredible result and one of which we should all be very proud.

Thank you for your continued support,

Anna Spurling

Skoolbag App: This is a terrific way for families to keep abreast of news from our school. It gives access to newsletters and alerts that are sent out from time to time eg. Cancellation of events due to weather, arrival time from excursions and camps etc. if your family have not downloaded this yet I suggest this would be most useful. A perfect example is today's excursion to the zoo by year 1. We will contact parents if the arrival time back at school is not 3.30.

The weather looks great for the excursion so we wish them well today.

2017 Parent Survey has been sent out in an online platform. Emails have been sent out to the 75 randomly selected families to complete. This information is vital in the development of the plans for the future of the school. Your feedback is important. If other families would like to supply feed back hard copies are available via the office foyer and complet-ed surveys can be placed in the box in the foyer. These returns will not be included the Department survey results but will be a valuable resource to the planning of the school.

Regards,

Gavan Welsh, Principal

Last week we had two fantastic sitters. Thank you to Mark O’Connor from the

Geelong Football Club and Sebastian from Fresh food who generously gave us

their time.

A portrait not only reveals what the person may physically look like, but also

show some of their personality. Students ask the sitters questions to help them

make decision about colour, composition and background.

Tomorrow we have Olympian and ex Chilwell student Jake Benstead joining us.

Next week we are lucky to have Darryl Ridley and Leah Alstin.

Deb Fisher and The Art Committee.

TERM 3 HOUSE ACTIVITIES

Purpose: House captains were investigating how else the houses could be used around the

school. They were looking to create a sense of community through fun competitive activi-

ties that contribute to points similar to Hogwarts. A voxpop survey that was run by Junior

School Council revealed that many students know of their house but are not familiar with

the value associated. As a response the house captains have designed activities aimed to

encourage these values through fun competitive activities.

Each activity has been designed to showcase the value of their house. Anyone from grades

3 - 6 can sign up to enter the

activities. Numbers are limited so get in early!

The grand prize for the winning house will be announced later in the term.

BRAVEHEARTS

Last week, Ditto's ‘Keep Safe Adventure Show’ (Bravehearts) came to school and spoke to the grade Preps, Grade 1 and Grade 2s. The performance consisted of the following segments:

Understanding 'yes' and 'no' feelings

Identification of the Private Parts (mouth, chest, between the legs and bottom)

Recognition of 'warning signs' (racing heart, butterflies in the tummy, jelly legs, stuck in the mud feet).

Help children identify language and feelings associated with secrets.

Action children should take if they feel safe or unsure (run and tell someone you trust).

All of the students have received an activity booklet to complete at home.

It would be wonderful if all parents could go through the book with your child and have a discussion about its contents.

Thank you to Ms Wieland for organising this for our students.

Bareena Singing competition

Congratulations to all the contestants

in the Singing competition held on

Monday. The winner will be

announced next week and scores for

each house will be updated on our

tally sheet.

PREP 100 DAY CELEBRATION

Last Friday, our Preps celebrated 100 Days of School. Balloons and streamers greeted them upon their arrival to school. After a morning of fun-filled activities, the Preps enjoyed a morning tea with our buddies, parents and special friends who have supported their wonderful start to school. We finished the day performing '100 Days of School' song at assembly. Many thought they now head straight to Grade 1, but thankfully we're relieved to know they have another 100 days of fun ahead of them in Prep. The teachers are so proud of all they have achieved already and thank the parents for their great support in fostering a positive transition to school life.
