Dear Families,

Governing Council AGM

Last Monday night we held the Governing Council Annual General Meeting (AGM) in the library. It was wonderful to see so many parents and staff attend. I would like to acknowledge and thank Erica Staude for her administration of the evening and the outgoing Governing Council members for their commitment and contribution to the school community. At the AGM we presented the 2019 Annual Report which highlights the school’s achievement from the year.

This year at the AGM we had eight x 2 year vacancies and 2x one year vacancies and we are pleased to inform the community that the Governing Council for 2020 is:

Continuing members: Renee Barton, Lisa Richards, Mari Rugala, Anthony Venning, Sarah Nicholas

Two year tenure: Alison Cameron-Edwards, Nadia Iranmehr, Mathew Lister, Rory Edwards, Leigh Lauwrens, Felicia Wee, Purple Zhang and Lucie Zweck

One year tenure: Julie Brookes, Jen Slocombe

Community Member: Reverend Barb Paull-Hunt

Staff reps: Term 1 - Jo Scott Watherston and Annette Reid

The Governing Council Constitution states that there can be “up to 15 parents” so technically there is one more vacancy. If you wish to nominate contact the front office for a form by Monday 4 March. More than one nomination will require a vote to be held, which we will do by emailing a voting slip to parents.

At the first Governing Council meeting, following the AGM, elections for office bearers were held. We congratulate the following people on being elected to these leadership positions: Anthony Venning (Chairperson), Rory Edwards (Deputy Chairperson), Lisa Richards (Treasurer) and Alison Cameron-Edwards (Secretary).

Each Governing Council member sits on one of our sub-committees as documented in the table on page 2. All sub committees are open to all parents to attend.

Our first Governing Council function will be a dinner on Tuesday 3 March at the Warradale Hotel at 7pm. Our Governing Council meetings for this year will be held on Mondays at 7pm on the following dates:

Term 1: 16 March - there will be an Induction Meeting at 6pm for all new GC members

Term 2: 18 May & 15 June

Term 3: 10 August & 7 September

Term 4: 2 November & 30 November

I feel extremely privileged to be principal of Paringa Park Primary; we have the most wonderful children who are keen and ready to learn every day, an outstanding, highly professional staff and a parent community that places great value in education and acknowledges the importance of working together in partnership to support their child's learning. The role of Governing Council is critical in this partnership, as they represent the voices of our community. I am really looking forward to working with the Governing Council throughout the year as we continue to build on the great things that happen in our Paringa Park school community.

Parents & Community

Literacy Improvement for All Literacy is a fundamental life skill.

It is developed in multiple ways – through listening to, reading, viewing and creating language. First at home and then as part of their education, children learn to understand and use language effectively and confidently.

This is essential for learning, communicating and participating in society. What are known as ‘texts’ are the various ways language is used – it can be written, spoken, visual, or a combination of these, and in print, digital or online forms. All of these forms show the diverse ways language is used to communicate in our world.

At home, you can help your child develop literacy capability by:

playing games to develop knowledge and enjoyment of learning new words

sharing a wide variety of age-appropriate texts with your child, including books, novels, websites, newspaper, films and television programs

talking about favourite authors, directors and producers and why you like their work

SVE – Crazy Hair Day Friday 13 March The Student Voice Executives will be supporting the Leukemia Foundation by running a crazy hair day on Friday 13 March. SVE would love the whole school to come with crazy and colourful hair and provide a gold coin donation. For those that want to donate but don’t have the tools at home to create some crazy hair, the SVE team will have a Crazy Hair Stylist Stall near the Nature Playground in the morning and at recess. All it will require is a gold coin donation to get our student leaders to make up your hair. So let’s see some wonderful designs to support Blood Cancer Research. School uniform must be worn on crazy hair day.

Year 7 to High School Parent Forum On Tuesday night we held a parent forum to provide families with an opportunity to share their thoughts and wonderings about the year 7 move to high school at the end of 2021. We really appreciated hearing from the 25 parents who attended and it has given us many things to consider when we are planning for the implementation of this systemic change. Thank you to all those who attended.

Consent Forms The welcome pack provided to families at the start of this year contained a number of forms for parents to complete and return to school. If you haven’t already done so, please ensure that you read and sign the following documents and return them to the front office as soon as possible.

General consents

Cyber safety agreement (new children this year)

Digital citizenship (year 3-7)

Swimming/Aquatics consent form

Local Walks consent form

Personal Details form (pink sheet)

Uniform News Late last year Governing Council approved a minor change to the policy in regards to hats. Due to safety issues, hats must not have chin straps, cords or drawstrings. If your child’s hat does have a cord or strap, please remove it or provide a new hat that is compliant.

The uniform shop is open every Friday from 8.30am – 9.30am, or alternatively orders can be placed via the Qkr app with items sent home with children the next day.

A reminder to ensure all clothing is named (including the child’s last name) so that when lost it can be reunited with its owner!

We appreciate your cooperation in ensuring your child comes to school dressed in the correct uniform. If you have any queries please contact front office staff.

Library News What is the Premier’s Reading Challenge? The Challenge is a literacy engagement strategy that requires students to read 12 age appropriate books in a year. Students who complete the Challenge receive an award in Term 4.

Who can participate: The Premier’s Reading Challenge is open to all students from Reception to Year 12 in South Australian government and non-government schools as well as home education students.

How to complete the challenge:

Read 12 books: students are challenged to read 12 books from the start of the school year until the first Friday in September.

Recording: students will record the titles and authors of the books they read on the PRC recording form (can be found on the website or for from the teacher). Students can also record the books in the back of a school book and bring it to the library for recording electronically. Attached to this newsletter is a form.

Endorsement: Teachers, teacher librarians, public librarians or parents/carers must sign each entry on the Student Reading Record. This indicates that a student has read (or shared in the reading of) a book at an appropriate literacy level and that the book title and author are accurate.

Number of free choice books: Reception - Year 7 Students are required to read 8 of the 12 books from the Premier’s Reading Challenge booklist at their appropriate year level (this can be individually negotiated). They may read 4 books of their own choice at a similar standard to books on the list.

Useful Information: It is preferred that students only enter 2 books from the same series so that they are “challenging” themselves with their choices

Book series: if at least one book from a series is included on the Premier’s Reading Challenge booklist, then any book from that series can also be included.

Awards: There is only one award per student per year

Award order: 1st year - certificate signed by the Premier, 2nd year - bronze medal, 3rd year - silver medal, 4th year - gold medal, 5th year - champion medal, 6th year - legend medal, 7th year- hall of fame medal, 8th year – hall of fame reader for life award (R4L).

Happy reading, Tracey, Anne And Caroline

Upcoming Parent Workshops

Oral Language and Phonological Awareness Thursday 5 March All families are invited to attend this workshop presented by Kathryn Anderson, our department speech pathologist. There will be 2 sessions on this day: 9am-10.30am and 6pm-7.30pm. Kathryn will share with families the importance of oral language, explain what phonological awareness is, and discuss strategies parents can use to support their child at home. We look forward to seeing you there.

SAPSASA News Cricket Earlier in the term we had some year 6/7 girls attend trials for the Western Zone Girls Cricket Team. Congratulations to Grace P who has been selected in the team. Grace will play in the State carnival in a couple of weeks time. The boys selection trials are still in progress and should be finalised soon.

Tennis Two weeks ago, on a Sunday, a number of our students attended the SAPSASA trials for the South West District tennis teams. It was a very successful day for our school as we had 7 students selected in the final teams. Congratulations to Ava K, Keira, Judd, Novak, Lenny, Tom H and Cody on their selection. Well done! They will be competing in the State Tennis Championships in week 8 of this term.

Swimming Last Thursday, 8 students went to the South West District swimming trials. We saw some outstanding times by the very talented swimmers Logan and Ali, who won all of their heats! It was the first time at such a competition for Austin, Portia and Hermione who all recorded personal best times. Our other experienced swimmers, Rhys, Dallis and Noah, also had PBs and placed in most of their events. Well done to all of you for your support of each other and positive attitudes!

*** SAPSASA STATE TRIALS ***

If you are 12 or under (not turning 13) this year, and have a talent in a particular sport, you are able to try out for the SAPSASA State Teams. You need to go to the School Sport SA SAPSASA website and follow the nomination process.

I am happy to help if you need it, but it is up to parents to nominate their child. Nominations for most sports close this term!

There may be an age exception for some teams like girls cricket, so check the website to be sure!
