MOSMAN BOWLING CLUB
FROM ABOVE!
6 were not decided until after the final round of the season, with our Grade 4 team beaten by North Manly and ending their hopes of a Finals berth. Grade 6 however, cemented their position in the Final by a strong 9/1 win against playoffs rival Chatswood. By virtue of having to play both their finals games on the 1 day, a Pennant win was always going to be a big ask - the first game against Belrose was a thriller with Mosman going down by just 3 shots. The afternoon game was against home side Harbord who were just too strong and also fresh, having not played in the morning. Still, a good effort by all our boys in both Grades.
Hopefully the 2019 Pennants scheduling will return to the normal dates, allowing us to field teams in 3 Grades again.
Greens Renovation Schedule As you know, due to the work on the front fence the School Green was not renovated this year - full marks to Scott and Snowy who have done a mighty job keeping it so playable. The plan is to take it out for a full renovation immediately after Melbourne

irstly, congratulations to the newly elected President of the Mosman Women's Bowling Club, Cathy Wilson! Cathy succeeds Jenny Hole who has done a fine job in the role. Alex Macpherson Carnival Our Annual Carnival was again a great success, with both days fully subscribed. Some 25 clubs were represented, with a North Sydney team winning the Monday competition, and a Balgowlah team successful on the Friday, but only narrowly (1 shot!) from George Fotis' Mosman team. The weather was perfect, the greens excellent and the catering just right for the occasion. Thanks to Convenor Harry Evans and to Event Director Jenny Hole, and to the many, many Mosman volunteers who did their bit to make everything go so well. And, of course, thank you to the event sponsors Mosman Travel and Crystal Cruises - their brochures are in the clubhouse and I urge all members to consider supporting these quality organisations. Cup Day in early November, with the Church green to follow in January.
Open Day Our membership Committee, so ably led by Paul Ward-Harvey, is planning a "best-ever" Open Day on Sunday, 12th August. This is the opportunity for Mosman members to introduce their families and friends to our sport - research has shown this to be the most effective way of growing membership. This year we will introduce our "Junior Jack Attack" kit for aspiring young bowlers aged from 8 years up, so please do include them. Men's Consistency Singles and Championship Triples The handicapped Consistency is now underway, with a healthy 2 2 b o w l er s co m pet i ng . Remember that markers are required for all games, and the protocol is for losing bowlers to mark their opponent's next game. Scott has asked that scheduling games on Saturdays should be avoided please. Championship Triples entries are now open, with the first Round to be played on or before 8th September. No doubt the 2017 Champions, Peter Smith /
Jeff Hole/Brian Spear will be fiercely defending their title, so get your teams together to give them some strong competition! Jack Harkness 6s & 7s Tournament This always-popular knockout tournament gets underway this month, with 16 clubs - including Mosman - invited to compete this year. Round 1 gets underway on 11th August, when event sponsor Bendigo Bank will roll the opening bowl. Board Nominations & AGM Nominations for the Board will remain open until 7th August, and will be gratefully received from Members wishing to contribute to the ongoing prosperity of our Club. Nominations should be given to o u r S e c r e t a r y , B a r b a r a Anderson. The 2018 AGM will be held on Sunday 9th September from 10.30am and everyone is invited to attend. The meeting will conclude with a complimentary beverage to wish the newly elected Board well.

great exposure.
We are currently in the middle of our pairs competition – and I would like to remind everyone to please wear the correct uniform for these club championship matches.
Our AGM was held on 21 July with very good attendance. Thank you for your interest in how our club is run. Many thanks to all the members who have volunteered to run our committees. Sue Addison on Selection, with her committee of Denise Owen, Ann Baron, Judy Mitchell and Tosh Czinege. Loyce Davis on Match with her committee of Betty-Ann Cleveland, Diana Noel, Sue Buchanan and Robyn O’Brien.
It is very pleasing that two of our newer members, Caroline Duhigg and Robyn Novakovic are joining the committee and many thanks to Glenda Weerden, Lyn Adam and Betty-Anne Cleveland for their continued hard work running the MWBC. Thank you to Julie Hayden for her informative speech on our District – North Shore District Women’s Bowling Club.
I am happy to accept the position of President of the Mosman Women’s Bowling Club – I am taking over when the club is in such a strong position. This is due to the efforts of

he club has been very busy since the last newsletter. Firstly we celebrated Norma Field’s 90th birthday with a lunch before bowls on Wednesday 4 July. 27 members attended this event. For the newer members, Norma Field was an institution at Mosman Bowling Club – her scones were legendary. She retired five years ago after many years service.
Next the Alex MacPherson carnival. Harry Evans and his team organised a very successful event. Many of the women entered and although the competition is very tough it is an enjoyable day. I played against a Grade 2 skip – quite an overwhelming challenge. Many thanks for the volunteers who helped with the toasties and lunch.
As Jenny mentioned in the last newsletter we hosted the District Triples on Monday 16th July. Mosman entered five teams which is great – the team of Judy Moyes, Trish Tamaoki and Betty-Ann Cleveland made it through to the quarter finals. Well done girls! I am very pleased to see that more members are entering the District competitions. Obviously you play against the best players but it is very good experience and it gives Mosman Women's Bowling Club

the current and past committee and the strong leadership of Jenny Hole. My objective as president is to maintain the friendly spirit, membership and bowling standard - entering District competitions and
carnivals. So keep putting your names down for these events – the details are on the board in our locker room.

The operation of the duress system in the clubhouse and office will be reviewed to ensure maximum effectiveness and response.
With the proposed introduction by the North Shore District of WBNSW of a new weekday twilight women's competition, the reconnection of existing spotlights to our green will be investigated.
Agreed to purchase a Junior Jack Attack kit from Bowls Australia to enable us to consider junior bowling.
It was agreed that our Club would assist our landlord, Mosman Council, by accommodating a number of their Mosman Senior Centre activities while the Community Centre undergoes renovation through the last quarter of this year. The mainly morning activities will now commence in late August and run through to early December,. They will not interfere with any MBC events.
Shelving inside the coolroom for beer and wine cartons was approved and will be installed imminently.
A proposal from Jenanne McAdam for an annual "Peter McAdam Volunteer of the Year" was considered and agreed. The inaugural Award will be made at the Presentation Day luncheon.
There was further discussion on the proposed unification of our Club, and agreed that while the MBC Constitutional Review should remain in place, work should not be furthered until there is a general agreement between the Royal Bowling Association and Women's Bowls NSW on the matter.
Due to the deteriorating condition of the aged carpet in the Administration Office, it was agreed this should be replaced imminently. For security reasons it was also agreed the door to

will be held in the Clubhouse on
Sunday, 9th September at 10.30 am
If you wish to stand for a position on the Board, nomination forms can be found on the shelf near the

Nominations should be proposed and seconded by two ordinary members of the Club, and handed to the
Secretary (or Office Manager in her absence) by Tuesday, 7th August.
The Board looks forward to seeing as many members as possible at the meeting to consider the
reports of the board members and the annual financial statments, and enjoying a complimentary
beverage with everyone after the meeting.

Both days went like

Of course our Carnival would not be the success it was
without the contribution of so many Club volunteers, and
particular we thank Carnival Convenor Harry Evans and
Event Director Jenny Hole. It was another superb team

Stablemates, I have been fortunate to obtain a copy of next Sunday's Form Guide from the SMH Form Analysts. DALE—English import whose form has been improving this season. Like this
track. Expected to lead and give a bold showing. Winning chance.
CANDY—Always worth backing in any event. Lead up form is good. Definite
winning chance on last start performance.
MITCHELL—Kiwi import who is proven on this track. Good form lines. Goes well
in all conditions. Winning chance.
ROCK—Queenslander who loves it here. Returning from a short spell. Won one of
two here last year. With any luck will win this year.
FIELDEN—Gave his all when here last year. Another who has a liking for this
track and will lead again. Hard to run down over this trip.
BALNAVES—Oldest starter in the line up. Experienced campaigner who will relish
the chance to show his capabilities again. Another win in him.
KERWOOD—Victorian who has been here for some time and showed liking for
this course last year. In winning form and will go on with it here.
EVANS—Two from two here last year and expected to go well again this time.
Handles all conditions. Should win again.
WARD-HARVEY— Up in grade this year. Goes well in the lead. Shown good form
and always a chance in any event. Should be in the winners stall.
RUSSELL—Another NZer. Youngest in the field. Has stout breeding being related
to a NZ Champion. Good form this year. Will win again.
FOTIS—Knows what is needed to win after experience in this event last year.
Another with a great winning chance.
SPEAR—UK bred. Has been a reliable performer in higher grade events. Has
gone very well in recent starts. Undeniable winning chance.
LANGE—Reserve who will get a run later in the day. Prefers to lead or be second
and has good credentials for this. Another win ahead.
LINDSAY—Late scratching!
Bloody amazing. Everybody is a winner. What good judges those analysts are!!
Our bowling tours have
gathered momentum each year, and 2018 should be no
different with an exciting and accessible destination in Port Macquarie on offer.
Due to our crowded calendar this year, we are going provincial! Our
Tour will be over the last weekend in November when we will be hosted by
2 leading Port Macquarie
Bowls Clubs, with friendly tournaments played on
Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th November.
Port Macquarie is very accessible by road, air and
rail, and accommodation is being arranged at the well-located and affordable 4-star Rydges hotel.
To assist with finalising a r r a ng e me n t s w e nee d
expressions of interest please. Add your name(s) to the list on

JJRR JJACKACK AATTACKTTACK KKITIT Bowls Australia have an exciting participation product called Jr. Jack Attack, aimed at bringing the sport of bowls to kids around the nation.
Jr. Jack Attack initiative comes in the form of a kit that includes a carry bag, 32 light-weight rubber bowls, eight jacks, 50 cones, a target score mat, eight stepping mats, activity cards.
The Jr. Jack Attack kit is designed primarily for primary school age children, aged between seven and fourteen.
Will be christened at the Open Day on Sunday 12 August 2018!
Please take a look at the kit and BRING your grandchildren to the club
and introduce them to bowls!!!!
"Jenny and I used Mosman Travel for our trip to Oman and Jordan. The guides they
selected were excellent and we really recommend out of the way Oman as a
destination for anyone who likes to get a bit off the beaten track. The scenery is great
to see and the culture is unique.

by Jeff Hole
player to “put your bowl to my
foot”.
If you do this some players may
want you to leave your foot there
until they bowl and others will
want you to move back behind
the head. Take care to do what
the player requests.
Another positive may be to ask
for a bowl say a metre behind the
head or perhaps to use a
particular bowl as the jack or as a
means of getting into the head.
Thoughtful positive requests
provide the player with something
to concentrate on rather than
giving him the impression that
you do not rate his capability.
If you want a running shot and a
player is relatively inexperienced,
it is useful to specify where you
want the bowl to end up behind
the head or indicate the preferred
line to take. Again be specific
about the amount of extra weight
needed.
If a player delivers a poor bowl,
an encouraging comment such as
“You have another bowl” (if they
do of course) or “You can see
your line now” is a far better way
to help your team than to call out
“short” or “narrow”.
TTHEHE SSKIPSKIPS BBEHAVIOUREHAVIOUR
The Skip is the team leader and
the way he or she behaves during
a game can have a profound effect
on other players in the team. A
critical comment may turn off
teammates and reduce their
collective effectiveness.
These are a few points skips
should consider:
Firstly and most importantly it is
better to be encouraging than
critical. No-one delivers a bad bowl
deliberately. So calling down the
green to criticise or complain about
a bowl should be avoided.
If a player is consistently short or
narrow a positive comment such
as “see if you can put your bowl a
metre behind the jack” or “that is
the wide side so try a little more
grass” can be helpful. Advice to
the player as you pass on the rink
can also be beneficial and is often
necessary providing it is a positive
and private comment designed to
boost the player’s confidence or to
correct a consistent fault.
It is unhelpful to shout down the
green “don’t be short” prior to a
player’s delivery. You are likely to
get an overweight bowl or a
nervous attempt. An alternative is
to place your foot where you want
the bowl to finish and ask the
Watch your sense of humour.
Some skips think an amusing
comment can provide light
relief. It can for most players
particularly if they know you
well, but skips should be careful
of their target because not all
players will react in the same
way.
Watch your body language. If
things are going badly avoid
showing disappointment or
frustration by the way you
react. And criticising your player
to the opposing skip just gives
him more confidence.
Some skips tend to give too
much advice. Sometimes saying
nothing is best. There are others
who give too little help or look
down and mumble into the
head. So if instructions are
needed, make them very clear
and be sure they are
understood. If there is confusion
invite the bowler to the head for
clarification.
And don’t forget to show
appreciation when a good bowl
arrives.
These points are particularly
important when you have a new
bowler or a new member in
your team during a social
match. Most newcomers are
already nervous about the way
they may fit in with a new
group of people, and many do
not take kindly to critical
comment. We have lost players
to our club as a result of the
behaviour of some of our skips.
The Lawn Bowler's Manual
Your Club has acquired a number of this new
publication authored by renowned Australian
bowls coach, Len Hyde. "No matter how well
you are playing there is always room for
improvement. Consistency can be better, as can
decision making.....".
The Manual covers all skill aspects of bowls as well as the importance of
motivation, communication and the subconscious mind.
Copies are available from The Bar at $20 each. Len will be donating all profits from
the sale of the Manual to prostate cancer research.
