The information evening for the selection of subjects for Year 9 2015 is on Monday 25 August at 7pm. It is essential that all Year 8 students and their parents or carers are present. This Subject Selection booklet for Year 10 2015 will be posted home in the week beginning 18 August. The students will receive further information in their classes. have by now received a hard copy in Pastoral. Please also be aware of the assessment policy on the web.
This week has provided some respite after a hectic start to the term. When you look back at the number of events in the past three weeks, you gain an understanding and an appreciation of how busy the life of a school can be.
Consider the following list of activities and events that have been held so far: Year 11 Retreat, Marymount Tours, Parent Teacher interviews, Year 12 QCS Rehearsal, Marymount Art Show, Catholic Education Week, Staff Twilight Meeting, Careers Expo, Principal’s Awards, Athletic Carnival, Gold Coast Eisteddfod and the Year 12 Formal.
This week we had the Marine Studies Camp, Race Around the EKKA, Music Workshops, Gold Coast Interschool Drama Festival, Chess Competition and the continuation of the eisteddfod. Did I say that we have had some relief?
Next week we welcome our Japanese friends from Osaka Yuhigaoka Gakuen HS, in addition to the events of ECOMAN, Oceanic District Athletics, Ormeau Fair Battle of the Bands, Years 8 and 9 Science Night, Year 6 Science Day and the Year 11 2015 Subject Selection Evening. Amidst all of these events we have been able to fit in regular classes, excursions and staff development.
Our appreciation to all the staff for their willingness and expertise in coordinating these events and activities. Without their generosity and care these opportunities would not exist for the students. To the students for their participation to ensure that these events take place and the fine manner in which they represent the college.

Student subject choices are critical for their future beyond school. Getting the subjects right also assists in a more settled transition into senior studies next year. Therefore compulsory attendance is required. Senior subject selection booklets and forms will be distributed on the night. As well, important advice will be provided covering areas such as College Policy, Senior Curriculum, Careers & VET requirements.
As part of the subject selection process ALL current Year 10 students and parents will attend the SET Plan interviews the following Monday 18th August between 1.00pm and 5.00pm. Year 10 students will be dismissed on this day at 12.30pm so that they and our senior teachers are available for interviews. Bookings are required for these interviews and the password for online bookings has been provided to parents via a letter sent earlier this week.
YEAR 12 FORMAl
Congratulations to our Year 12 students who presented themselves so magnificently last Saturday evening. The students enjoyed each other’s company, the fine food and the dancing. Their behaviour at the venue was excellent as testified by the Marriott’s own personnel providing high praise as the best school that they have encountered. Thanks to the Year 12 coordinators Mr. Kevin Cornor and Mrs Irene Scott who organised the evening, Father Lucius

SubjECT SElECTION YEAR 11 2015
All is in readiness for the presentation to students and their carers from Year 10 for Senior school subject selection. We trust families realise the importance of these processes and make every effort to attend the sessions on Monday evening, 11 August and Monday afternoon, 18 August for the SET Plan interviews. Letters were mailed home and information was passed onto the students directly as well.
Op GuIdE YEAR 11 & 12 STudENTS
Following the Semester reporting of last term we have made use of a system which replicates the OP calculation used by the Queensland Studies Authority. This is not a prediction, as the data inputted is not the complete data used upon graduating from year 12. It is especially ‘false data’ since, to complete the calculation, the results of previous QCS test data from our school is required. It is, however, a relatively accurate guide to anticipate a likely range individual students can expect. Students need to book an appointment time with me or with Mr Murtagh so as to discuss these ‘results’.
ThursdAy AfTernoons - yeAr 12
Year 12 students do not participate in Sport on Thursdays after lunch in Term 3. They continue to be involved in an alternate careers/study/QCS program for much of the term. Compulsory attendance at school is required in Week 6 for all students sitting the QCS test. This week they had a presentation from Griffith University and learnt of the process for applying for Tertiary places through the QTAC system.

Friday, August 8th is the feast of our own St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. Mary was born in Melbourne in 1842 and died in Sydney in 1909. She took the religious name Mary of the Cross. Responding to the isolation of colonial families she pioneered a new form of religious life to provide education for their children. She and her sisters shared the life of the poor and the itinerant, offering special care to destitute women and children. Mary is remembered for her eagerness to discover God’s will in all things, for her charity in the face of calumny and for her abiding trust in God’s providence.
St Mary MacKillop of the Cross was canonised 17th October 2010.
This Mary MacKillop painting, done by John Maitland for her beatification and visit of Pope John Paul II for the occasion is titled “Nothing could come between her and a child in need”.
John goes on to say “…every event and accomplishment is rooted in her intense love of the child who is poor. This is her driving force”.
Year 11 Studies of Religion students will visit the Foguangshan Chung Tian Buddhist Temple at Priestdale and Temple Shalom Synagogue, Isle of Capri on Thursday, 14th August whilst Year 11 Religion and Ethics students will visit Calvary Church at Miami, learn about its history and function for the local Parish Community from Fr Ken, and hear a presentation from Mr Peter Lee who will speak to them about Migrants, Asylum Seekers and Refugees. SOR students will be out of school for the day whilst the Religion and Ethics students will return to the College for Sport.
The food collection for Marymount Day has begun. Each year group is focussing on particular food types so your son or daughter will most likely be raiding the pantry or nagging you to buy something for this when you go shopping.

At the end of term 2, the Business Department runs Business Week for Year 10 Business students. The students have to create a product as part of this program. The winning team this year (Red) entered their product in the Mayor’s Technology Awards 2014 and they have been selected as a finalist in this competition. Their product is a personal locator which works from the GPS on your phone—just think if Daniel Morcombe had had one of these on him the difference it could have made!!
Now the boys all have to attend Bond University for the next four Mondays to be taught how to develop their product and to enter the second phase of the competition.
Congratulations and thanks go to Minh nguyen, Sam reiher and nick Shaw for entering the competition and we wish them the best of luck for the second phase of the competition.
Below is a picture of their product.

dEbATING quARTER FINAlS
The hard work and commitment paid off for two of the Year eight debating teams as they both got through to the Quarter Finals. With an unlucky draw, both teams were required to debate each other, meaning only one would get through. The teams were Jacob Browne, Rylee Nastasijevic, Emily Gorman and Elly Ricketts as the affirmative team and Amy Thompson, Hannah Van Den Broek, Lauren Fitzpatrick and Gabriella Gorman as negative side. It was a very close battle, but in the end, the negative team came out victorious. In my opinion, we all performed at a very high standard. Congratulations to the affirmative team who will be moving on to the Semi Finals.

Three of our Marymount debating teams competed in the Quarter Finals of the Gold Coast Secondary Schools’ Debating Association competition last Wednesday night. Our two junior teams faced each other to debate the topic: Beauty gets you further than brains. Marymount 2, the negative team won the debate by a close margin and now moves on to the Semi-finals on Wednesday August 6. Congratulations to Jacob Browne, Emily Gorman, Rylee Nastasijevic and Elly Ricketts and we wish them the best of luck in the Semi-finals.
Our Senior Open A team met Somerset College in the Quarter Finals and argued the affirmative case of the topic: Australia should reintroduce the death penalty. Unfortunately, they were narrowly defeated in a very high standard debate. This team deserves special mention because they have been together for four years and progressed to the finals every year. They have also set a wonderful example to our younger debaters. Congratulations to Caitlin O’Connor, Nikara Rangesh, Aisling Waugh and Caitlin McNamara on an impressive track record in high school debating. Furthermore, Caitlin and Nikara have completed adjudication courses and supported our debating program by adjudicating junior debates. Thank you girls for your contribution to Marymount debating.

Eric Ellis from Ngutana-Lui Cultural Centre visited to speak with the Year 9 Drama students
Year 9 Drama classes are currently studying Indigenous Theatre as a part of their curriculum. The first few classes were very confronting and emotional as we took part in exercises designed to help us feel empathy for injustices committed against Aboriginal people, such as the Stolen Generation. While it was emotionally draining it was also a really effective way of communicating the pain and suffering felt by so many of our Indigenous people.
Eric Ellis from Ngutana-Lui Cultural Centre visited Marymount this week to speak with the Year 9 Drama students. Eric talked about the culture of our Indigenous people, and explained that there are many tribes that our people belong to and these tribes each have their own ‘country’ within Australia. For example, I am from the Kamilorai tribe and my ‘country’ is the St George area, as this was the tribe and country of my Nan. Indigenous people have strong ties to their country and this was just one thing that affected the Stolen Generation so much, as being removed from country is just like losing your identity.
Eric told us of his personal experience with the Stolen Generation, which affected 3 generations of his own family, including his older brother. This was very meaningful to me as my own family experienced separation and loss as the result of the stolen generation.
I thank Eric for coming to Marymount to speak with us about this painful but important issue and I thank the drama teachers for the caring, sensitive way they have conducted our classes. Finally I thank my classmates who have been so moved by these happenings and who have been so respectful of others’ pain. This is an experience that I think we will all remember.
YEAR 9 DRAMA GUEST SPEAKERI was fortunate to be able to join the Year 9 Geography class on their excursion to the Ngutana-Lui Cultural Centre in Inala last week. Ngutana-Lui provides opportunities for students to increase their knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, and is a popular excursion venue for Geography classes and Indigenous students at Marymount College.
For me, it was a chance to immerse myself in my heritage and learn more about the traditional ways of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. I especially enjoyed the bush walk where we discovered the many things that can be made from native plants, such as medicines, soap, cordial, toothpaste and band aids! The peaceful, soothing surroundings made it easy to picture my ancestors using such traditional ways, living a life very different to my own today.
We got to carry out some aspects of traditional life first hand, such as gathering wood and bark to make a fire to cook kangaroo meat, which is one of my favourites. We also got to throw boomerangs after an amazing demonstration by the staff. While my boomerang didn’t actually return to me it did land several metres to my left, which is an improvement on my last attempt!
One thing that made the day so special for me was the way everyone joined in all of the activities, from dot painting to bush games to traditional dancing and boomerang throwing. It was wonderful to see so many of my classmates treat something that is so important to me, with such interest and respect.
Thank you to Ngutana-Lui for this wonderful experience and thank you to Mrs Cooper for letting me join her excursion.

Our success is due to skilled dancers and clever choreography, the support and encouragement of our teammates certainly helps.
It was a chilly early morning start for the Marymount Dance Team as they boarded the bus at 6:30am for the Beenleigh Dance Eisteddfod this week.
Accompanied by Ms Press and Mrs Weatherall, 50 dancers set up camp for the day at the Logan Entertainment Centre, which has been our eisteddfod ‘home away from home’ for the second time this year.
BEENLEIGH EISTEDDFOD
From the very beginning we showed the audience what Marymount dancers are made of with the Junior Extension Team’s performance of Closet Freak taking out First Place.
This group also went on to win First Place in the musical theatre section with their entertaining Don’t Say Yes routine. Not to be outdone, the Senior Extension Team took Third Place in a very large section with their revamped rendition of Run.
Highly Commended places were awarded to the Senior Extension Team’s first performance of their new lyrical Blue Lips, and to the Year 11 Hip Hop group who were joined this time by several Year 12 dancers.
‘Special mentions’ and positive comments were given to the Year 9 Class Hip Hop and the Year 9/10 group contemporary piece Ocean Sized Love.
While our success is definitely due to skilled dancers and clever choreography, the support and encouragement of our teammates certainly helps. Every performance was watched by as many of our fellow dancers as possible and their cheers of encouragement helped to spur us on.
We are practising hard now for the first leg of the Gold Coast Eisteddfod, which will take place next Friday.

VISIT TO SCENIC RIM dAIRY OpEN dAY
We woke to frost on the ground at 7:30am on the morning of our visit to Scenic Rim Robotic Dairy, Beaudesert. It was an hour and a half drive, which included our stop at Maccas. We arrived at 9am as cars were just starting to pile up in the driveway. It didn’t take us long to spot the calves. As we walked through the entrance we were pointed in the direction of Farmer Gregie. He was at the front of the milking station being followed by his many visitors. He took us over to our calves.
Gavin was the only one standing at the gate, we assume waiting for breakfast. As we called out his name, he replied very loudly to catch almost everyone’s attention. We hung around talking to the visitors about the ‘Cows Create Careers’ program and our life changing experience raising our three babies. After 2 hours we fed Gavin and Tobi their fresh milk. Tobi broke his bottle within the first 2 minutes (which was to be expected we suppose). Gavin soon finished his milk and moved quickly to the hay (also to be expected). As the calves lay back down and nodded off to sleep we went exploring the farm. We went crawling through the hay maze, only to scare the young children, oops! We saw the cows being milked by the computer operated robots, watched the live country band, and had lunch by the dam.
For our help with the calves, Farmer Gregie gave us his custom made milk glasses as a souvenir and some newly developed cheese for us to sample. It was hard to say our goodbyes to Gavin, Tobi and Blue. They have all grown a lot since they were at school with Tobi now being bigger then Gavin.
We would like to again thank Farmer Gregie for the opportunity to take part in the ‘Cows Create Careers’ program. Also thank you for the invitation to come to your open day at the Dairy. It has been a lot of fun.

Students found to continually do the wrong thing run the risk of being asked to attend school during the Exam Block. It is a serious matter and students are reminded to think about their actions. Uniform infringements also need to be handled seriously. We ask that parents discuss and support the matter of students complying with the College’s Policies on uniform, attendance and behaviour.
Should you have any queries, please do not hesitate to call us.

2014 SuRF lIFE SAVING quEENSlANd SECONdARY sChool surf leAgue – souTh eAsT region
SLSQ is bringing back the Secondary School Surf League on Friday 19th September at North Kirra beach. It is open to all students who wish to enter – you don’t have to be part of a surf club to compete in surf races, flags or sprints. Events include: Surf Races, Iron Mans (Swim/Board only), Board Races, Flags, Sprints, Surf Teams, Cameron Relays and Beach Relays. Age categories are U13, U15 & 16+. If you wish to compete, please see Mr Balym to register your interest.
TERM 4 SpORT
It is that time of year where I begin to organize what options students will have for recreational sports in term 4. If you are affiliated with any gyms or sporting groups and would like to be involved in hosting some students from our College on a Thursday afternoon for an hour from 1:30 to 2:30pm, then please email me at the College on [email protected] and I will get in touch with you.
bIllETS
Thank you to the families who registered their interest in hosting billets for the 15 & under State Football Championships being held at Burleigh Football Club. I have just received word from South Coast School Sport that we will not be required to host any students this time. Once again thanks for the offers of hosting and please consider offering again in the future if we are required to host students.
ThuRSdAY SpORT
This week we had round 3 and we continue with round 4 next week. Make sure you know which sport and team you are in and come prepared for your games next week. It is unfair on other students and other schools if we have to forfeit games because you don’t show up to the sport you are expected to be at.
quEENSlANd GOVERNMENT YOuNG AThlETE ASSISTANCE pROGRAM
If your child has competed at a State or State School Championships, National or National School Championship or International Championship you may be eligible to receive $200 financial assistance from the Queensland Government. Go to http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/funding/overview/young-athlete.html to find out more information and to see if you are eligible.
SpORTING RESulTS
Many of the sporting results that happen outside of school only make their way to our newsletter because the students or their family inform the school. If you would like to have your results or your child’s results published in the newsletter, please contact me via email: [email protected] and I will make sure we have the details in the next newsletter.

GOld COAST INSTITuTE OF TAfe – 2014 direCT enTry/ SChOlARShIp pROGRAM
For those Year 12 students turning their attention to study options for next year, GCIT offer an early placement program as well as scholarship opportunity. The Direct Entry/Scholarship program rewards efforts outside of academics such as certificate qualifications, work experience, and community involvement. Placements within Diploma courses (1yr-18months) are offered prior to OP/Rank Release, and provide peace-of-mind, and in some cases a back-up plan. Also GCIT provide Diploma courses which may suit students looking for a gentler transition from High School, than that of a University bound student. For students who may not have achieved the OP/Rank or gained the prerequisite requirement by university, many of the Diploma Level courses articulate directly into university after only 12 months. To register your interest, visit the Marymount College Careers Office today, where support is provided for those students interested in submitting an application. Applications are due by Friday, 12th September 2014.
