Maroubra Junction Public School was
greatly honoured this week with a
group of student leaders being invited
to meet the Governor-General of
Australia, Her Excellency the
Honourable Quentin Bryce AC CVO.
The Governor-General spoke at length
with the children about their project
that focuses on the environment.
Sincere thanks to Louise Kelly for
assisting with arrangements for the
meeting and to Helen Empacher who
was the instigator of our student
leadership program; and of course,
congratulations to our environmental
warriors!
The momentum is certainly mounting
as we head towards our centenary
celebrations in October. The children
and staff are hard at work preparing
for the art show and performances.
Our very hard working committee is
working overtime organising the sale
of merchandise, preparing for the
evening cocktail function, finalising the
cookbook and history book and
organising stalls for the day time
celebration. Please read more
information in today’s newsletter!
Our 1, 2, 3 Magic Parenting course
commences next Monday, 19th
August. It will run for three consecutive
Mondays from 9.00-11.30am. If you
have not yet registered, don’t miss out!
This is a highly valued course and it
will not be run again for at least twelve
months. To register, call the office or
go online:

anxiety or social issues. Read more

K I SS & GO ZON E
R EM I N D E R
Please do not park on the school
side of Loch Maree Street unless
you are using the Kiss & Go
Zone. If you are not using Kiss &
Go, please arrange to meet your
children at one of the gates on
Storey Street or Moverly Road.
P . 2
Kiss & Go Zone - Some more reminders! You MUST display the sign provided in
the lower left hand corner of your
windscreen as you approach the pick
up area so that supervising staff can
have the children ready. A good idea is
to attach the sign to your passenger
side sun visor with some rubber bands
so that it is easily seen.
Parents MUST tell their children in the
morning if they are using the KISS &
GO ZONE that day so they know to go
to the gate.
If your child is not ready for collection,
you WILL be asked to drive around the
block. Please reinforce with your child
the importance of going straight to the
gate upon dismissal.
Parents should remain in the vehicle. It
is important your child knows how to
fasten his/her own SEATBELT though
very young children may be assisted by
the supervising teacher if required.
Please encourage the child to move
quickly.
Registrations for the trial have
RE-OPENED - click on the following

Showcase Final preparations for the Showcase
concert next week are underway with
final costumes fittings this Thursday
and last minute rehearsals next week.
The children are very excited and we
can’t wait to see their performances!
Please note that some families have
not yet returned permission notes
and ticket orders. These are need
urgently!!
Bike Racks/Safety Now that we have our bike racks at
school, parents should be aware of the
following safety guidelines:
All riders and passengers on
bicycles must wear an approved
helmet.
Children under 12 years and
older riders accompanying them
may ride on the footpath unless
there are signs specifically
prohibiting cycling. Riders must
keep to the left and give way to
pedestrians.
The RTA recommends that
children under ten years should
ride in a safe place away from
roads and driveways and
children 10-12 years should
avoid cycling near busy roads.
Bicycles should be well
maintained with working brakes
and a bell.
We’d love to see more children riding
to school. Please keep these important
safety messages in mind!
Band Staffing Changes From this week, Jane-Marie Talese will
take over from Michael Hanna as band
director for the remainder of the year
and onwards into 2014. Jane-Marie is
an excellent teacher and conductor,
and she is familiar with the school,
having filled in for Michael already this
year.
Directions in Music has recently
employed an extra teacher (Heidi
Wilson) to assist with the development
of some of our programs. Heidi will
attend the junior band morning
rehearsal to assist, as well as attending
during the tutorial program and senior
band rehearsal.
Clinical Psychologist Concerned about the number of
children in our school presenting with
anxiety, the learning support team will
engage a clinical psychologist to run
group therapy sessions commencing
later this term.
Sources of anxiety may include (but
are not be limited to):
fear of social situations
fear of rejection
fear of performing in public
fear of a specific object or
situation (e.g. storms or
lightning/thunder, insects,
blood)
fear of being separated from a
parent/carer
fear about a parent/carer being
harmed
fears of harm to self
fears about academic
performance
fears about coming to school
generalised fears about the
future (what will happen, how it
might turn out)
Normal levels of anxiety can assist
people to be more focused and
motivated, and to solve problems
more efficiently. However, chronic or
high levels of anxiety can reduce a
person's capacity to respond
appropriately or effectively to stressful
situations or even normal routine
activities. For example, a highly anxious
person may experience physical
feelings of panic and may seek to
avoid anything that might trigger their
anxiety (such as being alone, going to
school, talking in front of a group).
More specific information about the
program will be provided to parents
should their child be considered for
inclusion. If you have concerns about
your child, please discuss a referral to
the learning support team with your
child’s class teacher.

Bring Your Own Device Bring your own device (BYOD) refers to
technology models where students
bring a personally owned device to
school for the purpose of learning. A
personally owned device is any
technology device brought into the
school and owned by a student (or the
student’s family), staff or guests. Put
simply, BYOD is a solution where
students quite literally bring their own
device to school in order to access the
internet and/or school network by 3G
or Wi-Fi, be it a smartphone, tablet,
laptop or other device.
Earlier this year, the school council
discussed the benefits of our school
moving in this direction in the future.
We discussed the fact that these
devices are integral to the world in
which our students live yet in many
schools the use of such devices is
banned. Instead, would we be better to
include them in our classrooms and
teach students how to use them
properly?
In order to test the usefulness and
viability of personal devices, we have
decided that we will run an iPad trial in
four classes (KL, 1B, 3M and 6N). Each
of the four classes will have six iPads
and teachers will use them with the
focus of more personalised, student
centred learning and greater
opportunity for creativity.
The iPads will be provided by the
school and will make use of our
wireless network. The four class
teachers will visit other schools,
participate in professional learning and
work collaboratively to plan,
implement and evaluate the trial.
Any move towards students bringing
their own devices from home is some
way off and parents will be very much
involved in discussions should we
consider moving in that direction in
the future. Progress reports about the
trial will be printed in future
newsletters and presented t the school
council later in the year.
Peter Meets Andrew At the recent assembly where a team
of student leaders presented the
contents of the time capsule to the
rest of the school, Peter in 5R read out
a letter from the school captain in
1988, Andrew Czerski. Peter pointed to
the honour board to show the children
Andrew’s name.
So Peter was amazed when Andrew
came to the school for a visit, having
read about the time capsule on the
webpage. Peters words, “I can’t believe
this is happening to me!”
Andrew is now a teacher and though
he lives in New Zealand, he was
visiting family in Sydney and decided
to pay a visit to his old primary school.
It was lovely to meet him and hear his
fond memories of the school. And
clearly, it made Peter’s day!
Staff Retirement We farewelled a long serving member
of our administrative staff recently. Nan
Polanksy retired after 25 years working
in the office and later the library in our
school. A special morning tea was
attended by current and former staff
who worked with Nan. She was greatly
commended for her strong work ethic,
dedication and her calm, supportive
manner with staff and children. We
wish her well in her very well deserved
retirement.
