Rock Challenge 2011
On Monday 28th February 47 students travelled to the Southampton Guildhall to take part in the 2011 Rock Challenge. Rock Challenge is a national dance competition that celebrates youth talent. The students have been working on this dance for the
past 5 months after school and produced an excellent dance piece. The dance was based around the theme "The Butterfly
Effect". The dance explored the different consequences a young girl faces after choosing different methods of travelling home.
The CCS team finished in 4th place out of 10 schools and also won Best Set and Best Makeup. Placing in the top 4 was a real
achievement!
All of the students worked hard choreographing the dance pieces and working with students from different year groups.
Well done CCS!
Ski Trip to Italy Feb 2011
On Saturday 12th February 2011, 32 students from Year 10 and 11 and 4 staff embarked on a 20 hour coach journey (with no DVD
player on the coach!) to the Aosta Valley in Italy for a week of fun in the snow.
After getting kitted out with all the relevant ski gear, the students
travelled up the summit of the mountain to start their snow sport tuition. For some students this would be the first time they had ever
held skis in their hands, let alone have them attached to their legs!!!
The students were split into working groups depending on their previous experience on the slopes and would receive 5 hours of
lessons a day.
Many students were being assessed throughout the week in relation to their GCSE PE course with a view to using skiing/snowboarding as
one of their chosen sports for their practical examination. Students also improved their Italian and this was evident in communication
with Italians through the course of the week - “prego”.
On top of this, the students were provided with an extensive après ski programme which included bowling, pizza night, disco, and the
eagerly anticipated presentation evening.
Throughout the week all students progressed extremely well and by the end of the week all students were skiing/snowboarding, the whole
mountain – a real achievement!
The students behaved
exceptionally well throughout the week
and were a pleasure
to be with and CCS can be proud of the
maturity levels shown by all whilst
on this educational
visit.

Dragons’ Den Competition 2011
After being selected with a few other pupils to represent the school in the SWAN Dragons‟ Den competition, we set to work on our challenge – to create an original, innovative product or concept, and
pitch it to the Dragons – four business men and women from various companies.
Our product was „The Bomb‟. This product is similar to a bath bomb, in the sense that if you place it in a
liquid it fizzes. The Bomb works by placing the milkshake bomb into milk and transforming it into a milkshake that anyone can enjoy.
After weeks of preparation, the team pitched our idea to the Dragons in the regional heats on the 17th February, which took place in the school lecture theatre. Our opponents were students from Chenderit,
Magdalen and William Parker.
The Dragons were very impressed with aspects of our pitch – they said that the presentation was excellent and that we had thought of a great business idea.
Team members have said:
“It was a really good experience as I got to develop my business skills and I met new people.”
“I liked that we worked well as a team.”
“It was an amazing experience and I‟d definitely like to do it again.”
"It was a great thing to do if you didn't study Business Studies GCSE! And brilliant for helping you think
outside the box and for your presentation skills".
Students involved in Dragons‟ Den were A Brophy, A Blackbourn, B Goddard, C Coetzee and C Boyer
from Year 10 and S Cotton, A Westgarth and H McNamara from Year 11.
Thank you to Mrs Freezer for all her help and support throughout the competition, and to Mr Everett,
Mrs Rose and Mr Ashton who were there to support us on the night. Also thank you to Ms Walsh for
allowing us to use the DT rooms to develop our product.
Coventry University visit CCS
On Thursday 17th February all the Year 12 Business Studies, Accounting,
and Economics students had the fantastic opportunity to take part in learning more about Coventry University. The University delivered a
presentation in order to give the students an insight into the University itself and more specifically the Business related courses and
opportunities they had to offer.
The University went on to get the students involved in a Business related
project to do with the Olympics. The project involved having to design and pitch an original product idea relating to the 2012 Olympic Games.
The students were split up into small groups and came up with all sorts of possible products; drinks, iPhone applications, map guides and video games to name a few ideas!
Students then had to pitch the idea to the rest of their peers as well as the Coventry Uni „dragons‟. It was a brilliant afternoon and got all the students involved in the creative and marketing side of our
subjects. Students also benefitted from now having a good insight into Coventry University as an option
for the future.

ECOBUILD Success
Earlier this year, CCS was one of only 50 schools selected to
participate in the b-live Employability Programme - a series of
projects designed to provide young people with experience in a
range of different careers.
The b-live Foundation is a charity working to support young people
and help them to manage and maximise their personal and career
development.
As expected, CCS students produced work of a very high standard
and a group of our Y7 students were one of only 3 schools to be
shortlisted for their work on the Innerspace project.
This project asked students to transport themselves to the year
2050, when Planet Earth is facing an unprecedented population
challenge and building crisis. To overcome this crisis the Global
President has charged enterprising young people to present plans
for new work buildings/work stations.
B-Live and the Chartered Institute of Builders (CIOB) were very
impressed with the innovation and creativity shown by CCS
students, H Sambridge, H Dunn, J Bartoli, B Rowe and C
Burgess. The design was sent to a professional model making
agency who transformed their idea into a 3-d prototype. This was
then displayed on the official CIOB stand at Europe's largest
construction exhibition ECOBUILD, held this year at London's
EXCEL. Visitors to the exhibition and CIOB website were asked to
vote for their favourite design.
The group were invited as guests of honour and spent the afternoon
getting a guided tour of the entire ECOBUILD exhibition. They then
met Professor Brian Cox, star of BBC's Secrets of the Universe, who
spent time with them, discussing their design.
Sadly, we very narrowly missed out on the first place, but we are
still extremely proud of their achievement. They represented CCS
magnificently and also had a great time.
The Next Big Thing
Earlier this year, CCS Y11 student and budding product designer, A Westgarth decided to enter the „Unleashing Enterprise – Next
Big Thing‟ competition.
This regional competition encourages young people to „get their entrepreneurial thinking caps on‟ and develop
an idea that could be the next big thing in business.
He is a keen cyclist who competes regularly at national level, developed the „Racemate‟, a portable bike stand.
The judges were particularly impressed by his innovative design which would appeal to all types of cyclists, from
die-hard racers to everyday commuters. He was also commended on his ability to combine creativity with concern for both environmental and social welfare.
He was rewarded with an I-Pad and is currently working with EMDA (East Midland Development Agency) to
progress his idea so watch this space…
Thanks to Wilson Browne Solicitors for their informative careers talk to Year 12 A team of solicitors from Wilson Browne gave a talk on routes into Law to Year 12s recently. With Law being
one of our most popular A level subjects, and a university favourite for many of our Year 13s, it was good to hear the experiences of Tom Warrender, Associate Solicitor, Commercial Law, Heather Davies, Family
Department Executive and Louise Tyler, Partner, Litigation Department. All had fascinating stories to tell
about their routes into Law and their daily work. Students were even shown photographic evidence used in a recent case of negligence against a hospital. A quiz on Law at the end engaged the entire year group, with
M Warren beating T Pankhania in a tiebreaker to guess the cumulative age of the presenters.
If you are in a career that you think will interest our Year 12s, and would be willing to address them in assembly, please contact Ms Haines or Ms Wright via the School. We‟d love to see you.
6th Formers Start the Day with Breakfast at Caroline Chisholm School

A very successful business breakfast event for those Sixth Form students who are looking for work was held
in School recently. A number of employers gave up their valuable time to advise students on their cv and offer guidance on routes into employment. The students were very appreciative of the time employers spent
with them and the advice they were offered. Here are a few quotes from the students:
D Brandley – “A very insightful event”
J Youngman – “The conversation was very beneficial and helped me to become aware of the career path I want to take. I am appreciative of the work experience offered to me and will be following it up with Mrs
Sheehan – Thank you.”
“I found it very useful and it gave me a fair bit of inspiration. Thank you.” S Fry.
A number of students have impressed sufficiently to have been offered work placements for the summer and
made contacts for the future. Thanks to all those businesses who took part, without their input and commitment events such as this would not take place.
Caroline Chisholm School Governors Staff and Students Committee
The Staff and Students Committee has a membership of 5 Governors and there are several Staff members who attend
to advise us. We meet once a term unless there are some emergency issues and then we have an additional meeting.
There are 9 main functions for our Committee which deal with all matters relating to Staff and Pupils throughout the
school. They are:
1. To provide guidance and assistance to the Principal and the Governing Body on all matters relating to Human Resources and Student Welfare.
2. To oversee the schools plan for recruitment of staff and monitor and approve remuneration through the Pay
Committee.
3. To oversee the work of the Disciplinary Committee – this work can involve both staff and students but
fortunately at Caroline Chisholm has rarely had to meet.
4. To ensure that the policies relating to human resources follow the guidance and procedures given by the
Department for Education.
5. To monitor the Schools Behaviour and Responsibilities Policy and to ensure the school achieves high standards. Alongside this we also work closely with staff and students on the Anti Bullying Policies.
6. To monitor the schools implementation of the Performance management and the provision of continuous
professional development and training of staff. To receive an annual report on the continuous professional
development.
7. To ensure that arrangements for the pastoral welfare of all students are in place, including support from external agencies.
8. To oversee the schools provision for looked after children and children with special educational needs.
9. To review regularly all policies (of which there are 24 ranging from Absence/Attendance to Child Protection to Critical Incidents to Internet Usage to Work Experience).
Some of this work may sound boring and dull but I can assure you our discussions are lively and interesting and we
cover a lot of ground at our meetings.
David Atkinson, Vice Chair of Governors and Chair of Staff and Students Committee
Royal Academy of Arts - Summer A' Level Exhibition The school is pleased to announce that it has registered again for this year‟s A' Level Summer Exhibition at the Royal
Academy of Arts. Students can submit their chosen work online, the work is then judged and successful pieces are shortlisted for a final round of judging before the top pieces are chosen to be exhibited at the Royal Academy. We
were very pleased that, last year, the work of one of our A level students was shortlisted and made it through to the
penultimate round of judging.
The opportunity that this gives our A level students cannot be underestimated. Successful students are given the opportunity to
have their work displayed in a national exhibition at one of the most prestigious settings. Students need to have selected which piece
they will submit by the half-term holiday and enter it by the end of
April. Further information is available at the Royal Academy website along with pictures of previous years exhibitors. The Art
Department look forward to receiving a number of excellent entries from our A' level students this year and their progress will be posted
on the school website and in future newsletters.

Year 9 Boys Football District Cup Campion v CCS - Round 1 Thursday 3rd March 2011 Campion 3 CCS 3 (CCS win 5 – 3 after penalties)
CCS travelled to Campion ahead of what was expected to be a close game. Both teams would fancy their
chances in this year‟s district cup but obviously one team would be disappointed.
CCS started the game well and S Hamp and E Baldwin were causing some early problems for the Campion defence. It was CCS who took the lead after 15 minutes with S Hamp getting the breakthrough. CCS were
beginning to dominate the midfield battle with both O Ghavami and S Nicholas playing well. Campion managed to grab 2 quick fire goals and go in leading 2-1 at half time.
Almost immediately after the restart S Hamp scored his second of the game from long range. The turnaround was complete when CCS took the lead after some powerful running from Ghavami, the ball fell
to S Caldera who squared the ball for E Baldwin to head into an empty net. Time was running out and with 10mins left to play Campion equalised. Full Time 3-3.
Due to the deteriorating light the decision had already been made to go to penalties. CCS missed their first penalty but after Campion had missed 2 of theirs E Baldwin had the chance to send CCS into the next
round... his penalty hit one post then the other before hitting the back of the net to spark jubilant scenes for the CCS players.
A fantastic game played between two very good sides. Hopefully CCS can produce a similar display in the next round....
Well done boys. Report by Mr Rich
CCS Team: T McGowan, J Anderson (B Wild-Smith), R Chamberlain (c), J Foster, S Heavey, B Gernon
