Continuing work goes on with our Literacy and Numeracy Grant as all staff look at best practice pedagogy and re-

view teaching programs across the College. Reports are also being written to go out at the end of term.

On a more mundane note, the children are now permitted to wear their sports jacket to school over their winter uni-

form. We are looking at trying to source a jumper which is not so “prickly”.

AFTERNOON MESSAGES can be given to students immediately after lunch. Please be aware that the school

administration area is a very busy time at the end of the school day and it is very difficult to get a message to

students who have already departed their classrooms for the day to stand in bus lines or parent pickup. If you need

to get a message to your child regarding alternative travel arrangements, please contact the school administration

prior to 1.30pm. Thank you for your assistance with this.

  • Primary Matters

It has been an eventful fortnight in the Primary school, with our students engaging in a range of amazing experienc-

es, including: a visit from award-winning author Chris Collin, the Science and Engineering Challenge, the GRIP

Leadership Conference, and the SRC visit to Bishop Tyrrell Place keeping us busy.

  • CSI MVAC

It was a very puzzling day for Year 9/10 students on Tuesday as they had to work through a myriad of clues to solve

    the murder of Sammy Smith.

Students worked as teams of investigators to perform and record scientific tests on:

    Blood samples

    Shoe prints

    Powder samples

    Hair samples

    Fabric samples

    Handwriting samples

Teams also composed a series of questions for the witness interviews. Investigators questioned:

    Sammy’s Mum (Mrs Smith)

    George Zhukov (Gymnastics Coach)

Sharon Bunn (Bakery owner – Sammy and a suspect’s employer)

From their results and interviews, teams made their conclusion about who they thought the perpetrator was, the evi-

dence that points to them and their motive.

Congratulations to all students for their participation in the day. It was pleasing to see their engagement and enthusi-

asm for the program. Whilst not all groups arrived at the same conclusion, their logic, reasoning and links to the evi-

dence were sound. A number of groups were commended for their thorough presentations.

  • K-2 News

The students in K-2 have been working very hard and showing great dedication to their learning. Our end of semes-ter assessments are in full swing and the students are proving they are making wonderful progress! This has been enhanced by our college’s involvement in the LNAP program in which we have been working to enrich learning op-portunities, especially in the area of phonemic awareness and number sense. We are very fortunate to be a part of this 4-year program, which will advance Literacy and Numeracy development across both the K-2 and 3-6 areas of our college.

We have been very fortunate to have several exciting ‘incursions’ over the past few weeks. The ‘World of Maths’ ac-tivities were very much enjoyed by our students who made their way around a series of mathematical problem solv-ing tasks. The students enjoyed the opportunity to work with Year 6 buddies on these hands-on activities.

On Wednesday 24th May, the K-2 students were fortunate to participate in the ‘National Simultaneous Story Time’

event, with more than 520,000 students participating all across Australia at the same time. Mrs Stonehouse kindly visited the Kindergarten classroom where she read the story “The Cow Tripped Over the Moon” by Tony Wilson to the K-2 students. We enjoyed hearing the writer’s exciting twist to a familiar rhyme.

It was then our pleasure to welcome children’s author, Chris Collins, to our college. It was wonderful to hear his in-spiring stories and many of the children have been encouraged to improve their writing and be ‘authors’ and ‘illustrators’. His new book “Chooks in Space” was a definite favourite!

Last Friday saw us attend the Primary Athletics Carnival. The students participated in a series of modified events such as ‘Frisbee Discus’ and ‘Hoop Shot Put’ as well as novelty events such as the ‘egg and spoon race’. This was followed by 70 metre sprints, after which they were all definitely worn out! Congratulations to all students for their participation and sportsmanship, and especially to Hawkins who won the K-2 point score on the day.

Our K-2 Choir will be performing at the Eisteddfod next Tuesday 6th June at 10:00am and we wish them all the best.

The MVAC teachers would like to give a huge thanks to the parents (and grandparents) who helped out with activi-ties and came along as spectators. Without your assistance, we would not be able to run such fun activities for the students and we appreciate all the help.
