The painters of the “Group of Seven” turned their back toToronto to hold their pallet and to bring images of a nature,virgin of all settlement. Or, almost. When we settle in Canada,in particular from Europe, and leave the city, it is the mostimmediate experience: the untamed widespread landscapeswith incredible spreading confirmed by maps. Obviously, thereare First Nations, but their dissemination and their numberdo not make them really visible one century after the “Seven”.As a result, facing the promise of an easy-to-model future,should we loose ourselves into the intoxicating nostalgiawhich goes with the fragments and the Indo-Europeantragedies sung by Mandelstam, in antic Armenia ?

A month of May, to come with exams, with the end of thecourses, to spend also at the cinema, at the theater andattending to lectures. Abundance of art books likewise.

He thendid several strips for Lapin, the mag-azine of the innovative publishinghouse l'Association. One of Guibert'smost impressive works of this pe-riod, La guerre d'Alan, recounted thewar experiences of Guibert's friendAlan Ingram Cope, who served as anAmerican soldier in World War II,and later retreated to France. It wasselected in 2008 by publisher'sweekly as one of the "best books ofthe year".In 2000, he joined the Atelier desVosges in Paris, where he workedalongside Frédéric Boilet, DidierTronchet, Émile Bravo, ChristopheBlain and Joann Sfar. With the latter,he created the critically acclaimedcomic La Fille du professeur.In 2003 he published the firstbook of The Photographer, thatwill be released into English inMay 2009 telling the story of awar photographer in Afghanistanduring the 80’s. After studying art history for ayear in university, François Ayrolesjoined the comic book workshop atthe École des beaux-arts d’An-goulême from 1989 to 1992. Heregularly contributes to Lapin mag-azine belonging to L’Associationpublishing house. In addition, heproduces works for newspapersand magazines (Libération, Les In-rockuptibles, etc.)...

In 1994, Ayroles joins the OuBaPo(Ouvroir de Bande dessinée Poten-tielle), a collective affiliated withl'Association. Based on the modelof l'Oulipo (Ouvroir de littératurepotentielle, instigated by RaymondQueneau), l’OuBaPo creates worksusing comic art medium, followingdeliberate artistic constraints.His most recent book, Les Amis,(published by L'Association) is partof the official selection at the 2009Angoulême comic strip festival.

Florent Ruppert and Jérôme Mulotmet at the l’Ecole NationaleSupérieure des Arts de Dijon. Atthat time, they create their firstfanzine entitled Del Aventure dis-tributed in festivals. As they hadbeen selected to have drawings

published in some magazines, theinnovative publishing house L’As-sociation publishes their first illus-trated book, Safari Monseigneur.Flaying colonisation with humour,the cartoon is a real success. In2006, with Panier de singe, theyhit the revelation award at theAngoulême Festival in 2007. The

following year, the twowriters released LeTricheur. To date, Ruppertand Mulot's only EnglishLanguage work appearedin the massive KramersErgot Volume 7, publishedby Buenaventura Press.

Born in 1976 in Sumiswald,Switzerland, Anna-KatharinaSchneidegger lived in Paris and in

Bern. She studied at the ENSAD,then in the Studio national de Fres-noy, from 2003 to 2005.

With the fall of night, the cityseems to change in its proportionsand forms. Darkness frames the in-teriors of apartments and highlightsthe individual element within theurban web. The personal, warmnest of the citizen is like a singlepixel in the image of a contempo-rary society. Scheidegger tries, insilent ways, to surprise. Theprocess she engages in to createher work is to step back, wait, seeand finally, to show.

Guy Mignault is anactor, stage director andplaywright who has ap-peared in over 40 the-atrical productions, suchas L’expulsion de LilyBarton, Drôle de couple,and Au secours. ArtisticDirector of Le Théâtrefrançais de Toronto since1997, Mignault receiveda Dora award in thatyear for C’était un p’tit bonheur.

John Van Burek spent 20 years atthe helm of Le Théâtre du P’tit Bon-

heur (which became le Théâtrefrançais de Toronto), before found-ing Toronto’s Pleiades Theatre,where he has been artistic directorfor 11 years. In all, he has directed

over 100 plays and op-eras. In addition, hehas translated numer-ous plays from Frenchto English.

Guillaume Bernardiregularly works as astage director inToronto, where heblends novel ap-proaches to movement

and text, as demonstrated by hisproduction of Andorra, by MaxFrisch, and The Return of the Moon,based on the works of South

African poet Stephen Watson. Julien Valmary is Director of devel-opment and communications at LeThéâtre français de Toronto.

Three men roam around at nightfrightening and stealing from peo-ple. Each night, the robbers wouldcarry their stolen loot to their caveat the top of the mountain. But, one night, the robbers stop acarriage, only to find nothing tosteal except one very unhappy or-phan girl who is delighted to be car-ried away. Arriving in the cavern, the little girlasked them: “But what are youdoing with all this gold ?”... Theyhad never wondered this question.

Thanks to this perfect alchimy withthe little girl, the three terrible rob-bers become sensible, stop stealingand try to do something useful withall the gold they had collected.
