1 Department of Civil Engineering Maarg DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vivekananda College of Engineering & Technology [Sponsored by Vivekananda Vidyavardhaka Sangha, Puttur (R)] Volume 3 December 2016 Inaugural function of Civil Engineering Student Association(CESA) The inaugural function of civil engineering students association(CESA) for the academic year 2016-2017 was held on 17- 08-2016, in Keshava Sankalpa college auditorium. It has been formed to the forefront for the department for conducting the activities, technical talks, workshops, seminars, industrial visits and competitions for the students. Dr. Akshatha Shetty, Alumini & Assistant Professor, NMAMIT Nitte was the chief guest of the inaugural function. The chief guest, expressed kind gratitude towards the inauguration of CESA and addressed the students regarding the importance of Civil Engineering activities in with special focus on higher studies. Dr. M. S. Govinde Gowda, Principal presided over the function and gave the presidential remarks. Dr. Sandeep J Nayak, HOD of civil department expressed his thoughts related to CESA. Prof. Shishirakrishna co-ordinator of CESA conducted the oath taking ceremony for the newly elected CESA members. Mr. Nikhil P.S. Welcomed the gathering and Mr. Avil Brian Serrao presented vote of thanks. Workshop on “Building Construction And Management” BCM-2016 A 5 days workshop was conducted on Building Construction and Management’’ from 18 th to 22 th July for final year Civil Engineering students. Inaugural function of Civil Engineering Student Association(CESA)

The inaugural function of civil engineering students

association(CESA) for the academic year 2016-2017 was held on 17-

08-2016, in Keshava Sankalpa college auditorium. It has been

Workshop on “Building Construction And Management” BCM-2016

A 5 days workshop was conducted on “Building

Construction and Management’’ from 18th to 22th

July for final year Civil Engineering students.

The objective of this workshop was to provide

practical exposure such as management of work

at site, centre line marking, reading construction

drawings, bar bending schedule, mix design and

basics design concepts.Students were actively

participated in the event to gain knowledge that

supports classroom learning. The valedictory of this workshop was held on 22/07/2016 Dr. M.S. Govinde

Gowde Principal VCET gave the presidential address and Prof. Shivarama M.S. highlighted the

importance and details of training programme. Dr. Sandeep J Nayak, HOD Civil Engg. Dept. and Mr.

Shivanand Acharya successfully co-ordinated the event.

Short Term Training Program(STTP)

The Department of Civil Engineering is conducted STTP on

"Analysis and Design of Multistoried Buildings using ETAB

Software" for Final year Students on every Saturday

afternoon. The inaugural function STTP for the academic

year 2016-2017 was held on 20-08-2016. Sri P Radhakrishna

Bhakta, Correspondent VCET, was the President and Dr M

S Govinde Gowda, Principal VCET, was the Chief guest for

the Inaugural Function. Total 17 students, two external

participants and one faculty have registered for this program

in first batch. Dr Sandeep J Nayak, HOD, Civil Engineering and Mr Rakesh Borker B S, Asst Professor

Coordinated.

GATE Training 2017

GATE Training 2017 for Final year Civil Engineering students

on every Saturday afternoon. The inaugural function GATE

Training 2017 for the academic year 2016-2017 was held on

20-08-2016. Sri P Radhakrishna Bhakta, Correspondent

VCET, was the President and Dr M S Govinde Gowda,

Principal VCET, was the Chief guest for the Inaugural

Function. Dr Sandeep J Nayak, HOD-Civil Engineering and

Mr Jayakrishna Bhat D, Asst Professor Coordinated the Entire

Event. Mr. Geetesh, alumni of VCET was present on the

inaugural day and will impart training to the selected final year students on Saturdays.

Faculty Development Program "ARIVU" to Perform Better

“ARIVU” 3days Faculty development program was

inaugurated on 17th September 2016 by the department of

civil engineering. The function was inaugurated by Dr M S

Govinde Gowda, Principal VCET, the program was

organised by Sandeep J Nayak, HOD, Civil Engineering and

function was coordinated by Prof. Shishirakrishna. The

resource person of the FDP was held by the internal persons Mr. Dr. Roshan Martis, Professor from dept of

Electronic & Communication Engineering, Mr.Rakesh Borker B S, Mr.H. Ajith Hebbar, Mr. Jayaprakash

from dept of Civil Engineering. External person were Mr. Dr. H. Madhava Bhat, Former Principal,

Vivekananda Degree College, Puttur. The main objective of the

function was to enhance importance of faculty skill for better

teaching, to understand the importance of research and research

papers, to know the importance and need of effective counseling

and teaching and to understand various research areas in Civil

Engineering.

Technical Seminar

One day technical seminar on the topic “"Basics of Valuation & Valuation as a Profession"” was

organized by Department of Civil Engineering, VCET, on 5th Nov 2016 in association with Institute of

Valuers, Manglore for final civil engineering students. The program was inaugurated by Mr. Satheesh Rao,

President, VCET and Dr. M S Govinde Gowda, Principal VCET , Sandeep J Nayak, HOD, by lighting the

lamp. Prof. G.R. Rai, Chairman, IOV, Mangalore, given welcome to the guests and resource persons and

he give the information about the seminar and its importance for

student as well as lecturers. The first part of the seminar on

basics of valuation was given by Mr. M. M. Kamath to

understand the procedure and method of estimation and

valuation in practice. The second part of seminar on Valuation

as a profession was given in detail by Prof. G R Rai to enhance

the importance of valuation for all the students as well as

professors. The function was succesfully co-ordinated by Prof. Prashantha Achar and Prof. Shishirakrishna.

Engineers Day 2016

This year will mark the 48th Engineers Day

celebrations in India, held in commemoration of

Visvesvaraya's 155th birth anniversary. The

department of civil engineering conducted Engineers

Day on 15th September 2016 in college premises. In

this event the department has recognized and

felicitated a great contractor Sri EPK Nair. Dr. M S

Govinde Gowda, Principal VCET, presided over the

program., The program was organised by Dr. Sandeep

J Nayak, HOD, Civil Engineering and function was

coordinated by Prof. Shishirakrishna. Faculties of other

departments and students of civil engineering department has participated in this event.

CAD & Hydraulic Lab Inauguration

The newly established CAD Lab & Hydraulic Lab of Civil Engineering Department were inaugurated on

19th August, 2016. Mr. B. Visweshwara Bhat, ex. Vice President VCET, has inaugurated the labs. Dr. M S

Govinde Gowda, Principal VCET and Mr. Vivek Ranjan Bhandary campus director are presided over the

program. Dr. Sandeep J Nayak, HOD-Civil thanked the Management for providing support for the

establishment of these labs and requested the students to maintain the upkeep of the lab and equipment.

Faculty of Civil Engineering Department and Student Representatives were present during the

inauguration.

Placement

Campus recruitment for 7th semester Civil

Engineering students was organised by the Placement

cell in the month of September 2016. Ms. Sreepriya

V. K, for being placed in Tech Mahindra Limited, in

the placement drive held in our campus. Ms.

Fathimath Jaheeza, for being placed in Infosys

Technologies Limited, Bangalore, in the pool campus

held at Canara Engineering College, Mangalore.

M2- Research: To provide a platform for faculty and students for the application of innovative technical knowledge

in their field of interest.

M3-Society: To inculcate professional skills to cater the society through technical solutions to the real time

problems.

Industrial Visit

One day industrial visit to Varahi Power Plant and

bituminous mix plant Brahmmavara. It was

organized for 5th semester students on 25th of Oct

2016. About 130 students participated and 6 faculty

members accompanied them. Students gained

practical knowledge on Hydroelectric power

generation, the working and preparation of

bituminous plant. Prof. Rakesh Borker B S taken

the lead role in arranging the visit.

Students of 7th semester Civil Engineering students

visited to Sharavathi Power Generating Station at

Jog, Shivamogga on 8/11/2016. About 135 students

were participated and 5 faculty members

accompanied them. The visit was supported to the

class room learning of the students and they gained

the knowledge about the hydroelectric power

generation and which was explained by Prof.

Jayakrishna Bhat and Prof. Shashikumar S. B.

coordinated and gave information to the student.

Students of 3rd semester Civil Engineering visited the

construction work site, Inland-Mayura and Granite

quarry on 22nd of October 2016. More than 120 students

were actively participated and gain the knowledge about

the manufacture of M-sand and construction details.
