The 15 % rule was supposed to start this year with our current 9th graders. However, recently the Commissioner of Education notified school districts that we have been given authority to defer the implementation of the 15% rule until the 2012-2013 school year. In an effort to reduce some of the confusion with grade calculation and to provide a smoother transition to the new STAAR test, Lyford CISD has notified the commissioner that we will take advantage of this one year deferral of the 15% rule. This is only a one year deferral, next school year; the 15% grading requirement will apply. Parents, this year we have added a Parental Involvement page on our District website. I invite all parents to visit the website page and get informed. Please let us know what types of things you want to see on our web page. Also, please check out our campus web pages. Each campus

does a great job of letting you know what is going on at the campus level. Speaking of goings on, middle school parents, take the time to ask about our new GEAR UP Grant. Parents, you also might want to ask about our emphasis on the STEM fields. We are making an effort to emphasize learning in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Call or, better yet, visit our campuses! I also want to mention a change on the athletic front. As a result of the UIL realignment that happens every two years, we will once again participate in 31-AAA athletic and academic events. Same district, but new schools, our district will include the following teams: Lyford Bulldogs, Raymondville Bearkats, Grulla (Rio Grande City) Gators, Kingsville Brahmas, and the Zapata Hawks. This new smaller district means that we will have fewer games in the SUPERINTENDENT cont. p. 8

A MESSAGE TO OUR LYFORD CISD PARENTS AND COMMUNITY, The spring semester is in full bloom. Our students and staff have been working hard all year. We have set our expectations high, our instruction is rigorous and relevant, and we are determined to produce college ready, life and workforce ready 21st century learners. In addition to class time, the many extracurricular activities that our students can participate in help our students grow socially, physically, and emotionally. All of life is indeed, a classroom. We encourage our students to participate in life activities, in fact, research shows that students involved in extracurricular activities have higher rates of success than students who do not take advantage of drama, music, athletics, art, UIL, youth leagues, etc. This time of the year is a busy and exciting time of the school year. Back to academics…As you know by now, this year is the first year we will administer the new STAAR state assessment. This new assessment is much more rigorous that the TAKS test. Grades 3-8 will take the STAAR test and our high school freshman class will take the 9th grade End of Course STAAR (EOC) tests. We will phase in the new EOC tests. By the spring of 2014 all 9th through 11th graders will take the EOC tests. At the high school level, our students will be required to have minimum cumulative score (this score has not yet been determined by the state) after all 12 EOC tests are taken. In addition, the EOC test score will count for 15% of the student’s grade for the course tested.

The Lady Bulldogs had an outstanding season! The team’s overall record was 25-9 with a District record of 6-4, placing 3rd in District. The team clinched a playoff spot against Zapata for a bi-district game in RGC Grulla. The Lady Bulldogs won with a score of 62-56 earning the Bi-District CHAMPS title. The Lady Bulldogs advanced to the Area round of playoffs playing Needville in Callallen. The Lady Bulldogs fell short, 60-47. The Lady Bulldogs improved over last year’s season which had an overall record of 7-21 and 0-10 in District. The team is coached by head coach Teresa Gutierrez and assistant coach, Jennifer Martinez. All - District Selections for 2012 are; Offensive Player of the Year, Maggie Vasquez, Newcomer of the Year, Gaby Rivera, 1st Team (Unanimous Selection), Zelina De Leon, 2nd Team, Yesenia Ortega and Rebekah Perez, and Honorable Mention, Karla Barrera and Miranda Ramirez.

Las Lady Bulldogs tuvieron una temporada excepcional! El récord total fue 25-9 con un récord del Distrito de 6-4, tomando tercer lugar en el Distrito. El equipo ganó el lugar de desempate contra Zapata en el juego del “bi-district” in RGC Grulla. District UIL Meet: Congratulations to LES students and their coaches who competed at the District UIL meet in Orange Grove. The meet was held on Saturday, February 4th with LES placing 2nd overall. STUDENTS ENJOY BUTTERFLY GARDEN Lyford Elementary students enjoy a gorgeous day in the butterfly garden. Not only do they watch butterflies flutter around them, they experience caterpillars changing into chrysalis and emerge as beautiful monarch butterflies. This outdoor classroom activity provides opportunities for our students to witness nature in progress. LOS ESTUDIANTES DISFRUTAN DE JARDÍN DE LA MARIPOSA Los alumnos de primaria de Lyford disfrutan de un día magnífico en el jardín de mariposas. The Mother & Daughter Dinner was hosted by LES on Tuesday, February 6th. The event was a great success with over 300 mothers and daughters attending. Guests enjoyed dinner, dancing, picture taking and plenty of fun during this special occasion. LA CENA DE MADRE Y HIJA 2012 La Cena de Madre y Hija fue acogida el martes, 6 de febrero. participating. Each student is to draw his/her own representation of fire safety and/or fire prevention. First graders celebrated the 100th day of school on January 31st. Students created 100 day vests, crowns and necklaces to wear. A parade in the halls also took place. El grado primero celebró el 100 º día de la escuela el 31 de enero. Los estudiantes crearon 100 chalecos, coronas y collares. Un desfile por los pasillos también se llevó a cabo.

CSI CLASS Seventh and eighth grade middle school students participated in a CSI lab. They utilized CSI fingerprinting kits to obtain fingerprints from teachers Jose Serna, Daniel Garcia and Ricardo Huff. The students them identified which finger print belonged to which teacher. Another section of the class involved creating a crime scene and the students had to find the suspect that was involved in the crime. Students were very excited and engaged in the lab activities. A student commented “This is cool. I see this on Law and Order and NCIS. I cannot believe I’m actually doing what they do on TV. I am happy my school is doing this for us.” Another student became interested in pursuing a career as a crime scene investigator after taking the Fingerprint Collection 101 class. Through this lab, students also learned about the Fourth and Fifth Amendments and the connection the Fourth and Fifth Amendments have on fingerprinting suspects. The next class they take will be a trace evidence lab. LA CLASE DE CSI: Estudiantes de los grados siete y ocho del middle school participaron en la clase de CSI. Ellos trabajaron con juegos de huellas digitales de CSI para obtener las huellas de los maestros, Jose Serna, Daniel García, y Ricardo Huff. Los estudiantes entonces identificaron cuales huellas les pertenecían a cual maestro. En otra sección de la clase se construyó una escena criminal y los estudiantes tuvieron que encontrar al “sospechoso”. Los estudiantes están muy

nivel del progama llamado Colecccion de Huellas Digitales 101. A través de esta clase, los estudiantes recibieron información sobre la cuarta enmienda y la quinta enmienda y la relación que las enmiendas tienen con las huellas de los sospechosos. LYFORD MIDDLE SCHOOL ECO TOURS Amber Zallar, a la izquierda, y Clarisa Infante tienen en sus manos una estrella del mar sobre la Nave de Investigación, Karma, en Port Mansfield, Tx. Un grupo de estudiantes del octavo grado de Lyford Middle School tuvieron la oportunidad de participar en parte del Comité de la Educación del Ambiente del condado Willacy, que esta desarrollando un programa que subraya el rico ambiente del condado Willacy.

CYBER MENTORING Lyford Middle School 7th grade GEAR UP Students Luis Carranza, Desiree Rodriguez, Jesse Rosas, Allegra Cantu, and Sidney Garcia, participated in a video conference cyber-mentoring session. The students met with Dr. Brian Warren, an assistant professor of Theatre at UTPA. Dr. Warren answered questions about the different fields of study that UTPA has to offer in the Theatre/TV/Film department. Dr. Warren along with the Lyford GEAR UP students will participate in FESTIBA in March 2012. FESTIBA is the Festival of International Books and Arts at UTPA. SESION DE GUIAS DEL INTERNET Estudiantes del séptimo grado de Lyford Middle School del programa GEAR UP Luis Carranza, Desiree Rodriguez, Jesse Rosas, Allegra Cantu, and Sidney Garcia, participaron en una conferencia de video sobre una sesión de guías del internet. MICROSOFT OFFICE SPECIALIST CERTIFICATION In yet another example of Lyford students preparing for the demands of the 21st century workforce, last week five high school juniors and seniors earned their certification as Microsoft Office Specialists-more than in any prior year! Adrianna Cavazos, Alyssa Coy, Ryan Gudino, Vanessa Pruneda, and John Vela are all students enrolled in the Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathway of Business Management and Administration being taught under the expertise of Ms. Hinojosa. One of the fundamental elements of this rigorous pathway requires that students develop an in depth working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Power Point and Access. When completed, the student leave armed with a level of knowledge and familiarity with the software that is comparable to that necessary for them to successfully enter the workforce. Future certification exams are already planned as well, which will bring the number of Lyford High Students with advanced technical certifications to an all time high! JOB SHADOWING On Thursday, February 23rd, students from all grade levels at Lyford High School were afforded the opportunity to participate in an exciting job shadowing program coordinated with Tech Prep of the Rio Grande Valley. Students were able to choose from among the 16 federally recognized career clusters, ranging from agriculture and business to science and information technology, in which they were interested. Students were then paired with a local supporting business or organization in that cluster and provided a first hand experience of what a typical workday in that field is like. This was the second year in which Lyford has participated in the program and the interest in it among the student body has only increased. Last year there were only 8 students participating in the inaugural program while this year the number of students taking part increased to 25. ACOMPAÑA A UN PROFESIONAL POR UN DÍA El jueves 23 de febrero, alumnos de todos los niveles de grados en Lyford High School tuvieron la oportunidad de participar en el emocionante programa, Acompaña A Un Profesional Por Un Día, coordinado junto con Tech Prep del Rio Grande Valley. Los alumnos pudieron elegir entre las 16 agrupaciones de carreras reconocidas a nivel federal en que están interesados, que van desde la agricultura y el sector empresarial a la ciencia y tecnología de información. LHS TEEN DATING VIOLENCE AWARENESS According to the Texas Advocacy Project, one out of every three teens experiences some kind of relationship related abuse. Women ages 16 to 24 have a higher risk of being victims. In observance of Teen Dating Violence Awareness, a display was featured in the LHS Commons. LHS students were given the opportunity to attend Teen Dating Violence presentations throughout the week. A video presentation was presented in the commons on Thursday and information handouts were provided. Students were given information on “What is Teen Dating Violence,” and on various types of abuse including verbal/emotional, sexual and physical. If they or someone they know are victims of abuse, students are encouraged to report it to law enforcement or to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE. LHS TEEN DATING VIOLENCE AWARENESS De acuerdo con el proyecto de Texas Advocacy, uno de cada tres jóvenes experiencia un tipo de abuso en relaciones. Con respecto a la deliberación de Teen Dating Violence Awareness, los estudiantes de LHS tuvieron la oportunidad de atender un taller de Teen Dating Violence durante la semana. FAFSA WEEK FAFSA Week was an overwhelming success for us here at Lyford High School! During the week of February 20th through February 24th students worked on obtaining their federal Pin numbers, which allows them to apply for federal monies for college, as well as completing their Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA application. Parents were invited to attend as well and took advantage of the free assistance offered in order to ensure that their sons or daughters would have the money needed to attend college in the fall. But don’t worry if you missed it! Lyford High School will be holding FAFSA night Wednesday, February 29th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. During this time parents and students alike are once again encouraged to come in and complete the necessary paperwork to ensure that they have the money necessary to achieve their dreams! SEMANA DE SOLICITUD GRATUITA DE AYUDA FEDERAL PARA ESTUDIANTES ¡La semana de ayuda financiera para estudios universitarios fue un gran éxito para Lyford High School! Durante la semana de Febrero 20 a 24, los alumnos trabajaron en obtener su número de PIN federal que les permitió aplicar por dinero federal así como completar su Solicitud Gratuita de Ayuda Federal para Estudiantes. DESIGNING FOR THE THEATRE The UIL Theatre Arts students this past six weeks have been working on the production side of the theatre. Each student chose a play to work with and had to design not only costumes for the play but also the set. They had to consider; the flow of movement, the aesthetic look, design proportions, the use of the approved UIL set and the visual properties. They have already learned about makeup, acting, costume designing, and improvisation. Their next big task will be to student direct a scene from their chosen play. There is never a dull moment or down time in the world of theatre arts.

DISENAR PARA EL TEATRO Estas últimas seis semanas los estudiantes de la clase de teatro han trabajado en el lado de producción del teatro. Cada estudiante ha escogido una obra teatral en la cual diseñaran la estenografía. Los estudiantes han tenido que considerar la fluidez de los movimientos, vista estética, proporciones del diseño y el uso de las guías establecidas por UIL del escenario y propiedades visuales. Nunca hay momentos aburridos o tiempo libre en el mundo del teatro. NEW YORK AND LONDON BOUND Frank Garcia Jr., a Senior at Lyford High School, has received the opportunity of a lifetime! Garcia is one of six students from the valley that has been chosen to attend the "Beginnings Workshop" for aspiring actors and performers! He was recently chosen by Peter Sklar, a talent scout and producer from New York, with three decades of experience discovering young performers such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Mischa Barton, Reese Witherspoon and Ricki Lake. Garcia will be in London, England in May. He will work with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and see a live performance of Romeo and Juliet. Garcia will also take a few days to visit Shakespeare's hometown, and visit many tourist sites such as Buckingham Palace and Big Ben. His second workshop will be in New York City in August. There Garcia will stay in Ryder University, where he will be trained by Broadway's greatest actors and coaches,

and also Disney's casting director. At the end of his workshop, Garcia will perform a solo piece in an off-Broadway showcase at the Orpheum Theatre. Cathy Hernandez, the Lyford Drama Department and his directors, Kathy Simpfenderfer and Thelma Martinez are very proud of him. DESTINO A NUEVA YORK Y LONDRES Frank Garcia Jr., un estudiante de Lyford High School en el décimo nivel, ha recibido la oportunidad de su vida. Garcia es uno de seis estudiantes del Rio Grande Valley que han sido seleccionados para atender un “Taller Inicial” de actores y artistas. MATH TEAM COMPETES AT JAVELINA MATHEMATICS CUP On February 11, 2012 our Lyford High School Freshmen were among students from 19 other schools who traveled to Texas A&M-Kingsville to compete in the 1st Annual Javelina Mathematics Cup. The competition was centered on Algebraic topics comparable in rigor to those found in the Algebra 1 End of Course Exam. Among an estimated 138 students in competition, Lyford was proud to have 4 of their very own place within the top 25! In fact, Lyford High School had more students place in the top 25 tier than any other school in competition. It's just another way in which our Lyford High School students continue to make us proud and represent the best in our community! COMPETENCIA DE MATEMATICAS EN JAVELINA MATHEMATICS CUP El 11 de Febrero del 2012 nuestros estudiantes de noveno grado fueron unos de los estudiantes entre 19 otras escuelas que viajaron a la Universidad de Texas A & M- Kingsville para competir en la 1ra Anual Competencia de Matemáticas. La competencia fue centrada en conceptos algebraicos comparables en rigor a esos encontrados en el Examen de Fin de Curso de Algebra I. ¡De entre los 138 estudiantes en la competencia, Lyford estuvo orgulloso de tener 4 de los suyos en los primeros 25 lugares! PROSCOUT Senior, Pamela Chavez recently received a call-back to audition for Proscout, an agency that has helped thousands of

people gain exposure in the entertainment industry. By being selected to move on to the next level, Pamela will attend workshops in Dallas and learn a multitude of skills such as, photo tips, monologue acting, interview preparation and get to talk to top entertainments agencies like MTV, Nickelodeon, Disney, Wilhelmina and Ford! Proscout has discovered various entertainers like Ian Somerhalder of Vampire Diaries, Jae Head of The Blind Side, and Disney recording artists Savvy and Mandy. Pamela began her LHS acting career as a Senior in the fall production of "Into the Woods" and is currently the stage manager for this year's One Act Play, "All Because of Agatha". Pamela's One Act Play directors, Thelma Martinez and Kathy Simpfenderfer, as well as LHS Principal, Cathy Hernandez a re ve ry p roud o f Pamela 's accomplishments! PROSCOUT Estudiante de grado doce, Pamela Chavez recibió recientemente una reclamación para dar audición para Proscout, una agencia que ha ayudado a miles de personas ganar exposición en la industria de entretenimiento, Pamela asistirá talleres en Dallas y aprenderá una multitud de habilidades como, puntas de foto, la actuación de monólogo, preparación de entrevista y tendrá la oportunidad de hablar con agencias principales de entretenimientos como MTV, Nickelodeon, Disney, Wilhelmina y Ford! Proscout ha descubierto a varios artistas como Ian Somerhalder de "Vampire Diaries", Jae Head de "The Blind Side", y artistas de grabación de Disney Savvy y Mandy. Pamela empezó su carrera de actuación de LHS en la producion de otoño “Into the Woods” y es actualmente la directora de teatro del “One Act Play” de este ano. Nuestros estudiantes y personal han estado trabajando duro todo el año. Hemos puesto nuestras esperanzas altas, nuestra instrucción es rigurosa y pertinente, y estamos determinados a producir estudiantes del siglo XXI que están listos para el colegio, la vida y la fuerza de trabajo/ Además de tiempo en la clase, las muchas actividades fuera del programa de estudios extracurriculares que nuestros estudiantes pueden participar en ayudan a nuestros estudiantes crecer socialmente, físicamente, y emocionalmente. Toda vida es verdaderamente, un salón de clase. Aconsejamos a nuestros estudiantes a tomar parte en actividades de vida, de hecho, investigaciones muestran que estudiantes involucrados en actividades fuera del programa de estudios o

extracurriculares tienen más éxito que estudiantes que no aprovechan de drama, la música, el atletismo, el arte, UIL, ligas de juventud, etc. Esta temporada del año es un tiempo muy ocupado y emocionante del año escolar. Regresamos a los académicos…Como ya sabe, este año es el primer año que administraremos la nueva evaluación del estado de STAAR. Esta nueva evaluación es mucho más rigurosa que la prueba de TAKS. Los estudiantes de grados 3-8 tomarán la prueba de STAAR y nuestra clase de estudiantes de primer año de la preparatoria (freshmen) tomarán la prueba de Fin de Curso STAAR (EOC) de noveno grado. Introduciremos progresivamente las nuevas pruebas de EOC. Para la primavera de 2014 todos los alumnos del grado 9 al grado 11 tomaran las pruebas de EOC. En el nivel de la preparatoria (high school), nuestros estudiantes serán requeridos tener una calificación cumulativa mínima (esta calificación todavía no ha sido determinada por el estado) después de que todos las 12 pruebas de EOC sean tomadas. Además, la calificación de EOC contará por 15% del grado del estudiante para el curso. La regla del 15 % debía de comenzar este año con nuestros alumnos del noveno grado. Sin embargo, recientemente el Comisario de la Educación notifico a los distritos escolares que hemos sido dados la autoridad para diferir la implementación de la regla del 15% hasta el año escolar del 2012-2013. la nueva prueba de STAAR, Lyford CISD ha notificado al Comisario que aprovecharemos de éste diferimiento de un año de la regla del 15%. Esto es sólo un diferimiento de un año, el próximo año escolar; el requisito de 15% de grado aplicará. Padres, este año hemos agregado una página de Participación Paternal en nuestro sitio web de Distrito. Invito a todos los padres a visitar la página en el sitio de la web y que se informen. Por favor, déjenos saber qué tipos de cosas quiere ver en nuestra página de web. También, visite por favor nuestras páginas web de cada escuela. Cada escuela hace un gran trabajo en dejarlos saber lo que pasa en el nivel de escuela. Hablando de lo que esta sucediendo, padres de estudiantes en la secundaria (middle school), tomen el tiempo de preguntar por nuestra nueva beca de GEAR UP. Padres, también quizás quieran preguntar por nuestro énfasis en los campos de STEM. Estamos haciendo un esfuerzo de acentuar el aprendizaje en la Ciencia, la Tecnología, la Ingeniería, y las Matemáticas. ¡Llame o, mejor todavía, visite nuestras escuelas! También quiero mencionar un cambio en la atlética. A consecuencia de la reorganización de UIL que sucede cada dos años, una vez más tomaremos parte en eventos atléticos y académicos de 31 AAA. Mismo distrito, pero nuevas escuelas, nuestro distrito incluirá los equipos siguientes: Lyford Bulldogs, Raymondville Bearkats, Grulla (Rio Grande City) Gators, Kingsville Brahmas, y los Zapata Hawks. Este nuevo distrito más pequeño significa que tendremos menos juegos en el área de Corpus Christi. Hemos procurado mantener nuestro horario de no-universidad (non-varsity) cerca de casa. Padres, los necesitamos como socios. Nosotros simplemente no podemos hacer nuestro trabajo bien sin su apoyo. Usted, últimamente, son las personas más importantes en las vidas de sus niños. Continuemos trabajando juntos, entrenando y preparando a nuestros niños para el futuro. Juntos, podemos ayudar a nuestros niños lograr sus sueños. ¡Con la ayuda de Dios nosotros lo podemos hacer!
