Welcome Welcome to the new Woodbridge Town Council Newsletter. The aim of this publi-

cation is to provide you with essential information of what we do, who we are and

how to contact us. We will also take a look at some of the things we have achieved

on behalf of the Town and give you an idea of what to expect during the forth-

coming year.

About us Woodbridge Town Council was created in 1974 as the successor to the Urban

District Council and is based at the Shire Hall, Market Hill. We are the third tier of

Local Government after Suffolk County Council and Suffolk Coastal District Coun-

cil and deal only with the Town of Woodbridge.

Woodbridge is split into four wards - Farlingaye, Kyson, Riverside and Seck-

ford and each ward has four councillors elected on a four year cycle - a full list of

members and their contact details is provided inside. Councillors are unpaid and

serve the community on a voluntary basis. The Town Mayor is Chairman of the

Council and is also the Civic Head of Woodbridge, representing the Town at many

civic and other functions

The Council is supported by the Town Clerk, Deputy Town Clerk, Finance Assistant

and Secretary who are always willing to help with any queries and their contact

details can be found inside.

What we do We currently own, manage and maintain the Shire Hall and Market Square, the award win-

ning Elmhurst Park, Kingston Field, The Garden of Remembrance and War Memorial, Fitzger-

ald Green (off Sun Lane), Broomheath, Fen Meadow, Tide Mill Quay and its moorings and the

new community buildings and public open space at Woodbridge Waterfront. We also main-

tain the Quaker Burial Ground in Turn Lane (just off Church Street), administer the allotments

on Kingston Field and organise a Thursday market on the Market Hill. Along with our tenants

and the associated management groups we manage an extensive property portfolio which

includes the Tide Mill, Art Club, Kingston Pavilion and Community Hall.

Hello from the Mayor What a wonderful Town we live in. As you walk around Woodbridge, history pours out of all

the buildings and you are mindful of all that has happened in the past and is still going on,

from milling flour at the Tide Mill to making violins on the Market Hill. The Town is always

busy and has many independent shops that have been run for generations by the same fami-

lies, which offer our visitors a unique shopping experience.

I am proud to have served as Mayor so to mark the end my year I am organising a music and

arts festival for all to enjoy from May 3rd - 7th. Please take a look at what is happening at

www.beowulffestival.co.uk; I look forward to meeting you there and saying thank you for

allowing me to be your Mayor for 2017/2018.

Drummer Boy

Woodbridge Town Council is

delighted to report the “Drums

of the Fore and Aft” Bronze

Statue (known affectionately

as the “Drummer Boy”), based

on characters in a Rudyard

Kipling story of the same

name, has been renovated and

moved from Melton Hill to a

new home on the Market Hill.

Despite the wintery weather,

the Statue was formally un-

veiled by the Mayor at a well

attended gathering on the 3rd

March.

Woodbridge Town Council is delighted to

report the freehold transfer of the com-

munity buildings and public open space

at the prestigious Woodbridge Water-

front development has finally taken

place.

The late Charles Notcutt and Councillor

Kay Yule piloted this project through its

early years.

Over the past year Councillors Martin

Sylvester, Clare Perkins, Michael Dale, David Mortimer, Geoff Holdcroft and Stephen

Attwell, along with the Town Clerk, have worked tirelessly with Whisstocks Develop-

ments Ltd to complete the legal transfer of the community buildings, open space and

the extended area of river frontage to the Town.

The Council intends to lease out the two community buildings on long term-leases at a

peppercorn rent to the Woodbridge Museum and the Woodbridge Riverside

Trust. The public open space, which will be known as Whisstocks Place, will shortly be

open to all and access to the river frontage will be via a new glass topped floodgate

which has also been transferred to the Town Council.

Together with the adjacent Tide Mill, an iconic historic building, the new Town Muse-

um and Woodbridge Riverside Trust Anglo Saxon boatbuilding facility will form a

unique centre of learning and a cultural hub for Woodbridge, securing an exciting

future for what was previously a derelict site.

New Town Clerk

Whisstocks Woodbridge Waterfront project

Following the news that our long stand-

ing Clerk, Mrs Christine Walker, decided

to stand down after twenty years of

dedicated service to the Town, we are

delighted to introduce our new Town

Clerk, Ms. Kate Lacey.

Kate comes to us with a wealth of man-

agement experience in both the public

and private sectors. She served in the

RAF for many years as a Fighter Control

Officer and has seen service around the

world. After leaving the RAF Kate has

undertaken roles in business, HR and

project management. She is also a great

believer in volunteering within the local

community, is currently Chair of Gover-

nors at Sandlings Primary School and

also spent several years as coordinator

of the Woodbridge Farmers’ Market.

Kate said “I am thrilled to be taking up

this new role and doing everything with-

in my power to support the Mayor and

Councillors of Woodbridge Town Council

to make Woodbridge an outstanding

place to live and work”.

When we meet - Meetings of the Town Council and its Committees are held at the Shire Hall and are open to the public. Please see our website for agendas and supporting documents.

have recently installed a flag-

pole on the Tide Mill Quay.

Councillor and Harbour Master

Michael Dale commented “This

will be used for ceremonial

national days and celebrations,

maritime visitors to the Town

and to enhance the Tide Mill

and Woodbridge Riverside

There will be more on both of

these items in the next issue.

2019 Woodbridge Photographic Competition Woodbridge Town Council is now

promoting its 2019 Photographic

Competition for which the theme

is 'The Essence of Woodbridge'.

We are seeking imaginative and

original images that best reflect

the character of our Town. The

competition is open to amateur

photographers who are residents

of the Town. Photographs must be

landscape in layout and be specific

to Woodbridge only. We hope in

particular that local teachers and schools will encourage their pupils to take part.

Photographs must be submitted by the closing date of Friday 3rd August 2018. To enter

send an email with the high resolution photograph to deputytownclerk@woodbridge-

suffolk.gov.uk along with your name, address, telephone number, title of photograph and

when and where this was taken. Please note entrants are asked to submit a maximum of

three photographs.

The twelve winning photographs will be chosen by a panel in August 2018 and shall be

printed as a Notebook and/or 2019 Calendar. Prizes of £50, £35 and £20 shall be awarded

by the Mayor at the Shire Hall for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

The Notebooks/ Calendars will be available for purchase locally and any profits will be

donated to local Charities and groups.

New signage throughout the Town The Town Council owns, man-

ages and generally cares for

extensive facilities across the

Town. In many cases these

“assets” have not been ade-

quately identified or the ex-

isting signs have become worn

and out of date. In an attempt

to “badge our assets” and

present a clear and bright

image for our parks and Town

facilities, the Town Council

have agreed to fund the de-

sign and installation of new signage throughout the Town.

The Town Crest has also been re-drawn and is shown on the front page of this publi-

cation. The wavy sections symbolise the River Deben, the Silver Escallops on the red

are taken from the arms of Thomas Seckford and the 'Omar Khayyam' rose is to

commemorate Edward Fitzgerald's residence in Woodbridge.

The oak stump refers to the wooden bridge from which the town derives it's name

whilst the cockerels are taken from the ancient crest recorded for the Seckford fami-

ly at their visitations of Suffolk in 1561 and 1577.

The immense amount of plastic waste entering our rivers and oceans every minute is having a

devastating impact on ocean habitats and marine life globally. We can all do our bit, individuals

in particular have enormous power through the choices they make as consumers. Making just a

few small changes can have a big impact on the amount of plastic we all use on a day-to-day ba-

sis. Some top tips to bear in mind:

1. In the UK we use over 35 million plastic bottles every year. Carrying a reusable bottle is a great

way to cut your plastic use and save money too.

2. Say no to plastic straws

3. Use a reusable coffee cup (2.5 billion coffee cups are thrown away every year in the UK – and

less than 1 in 400 are recycled)

4. Avoid products with “microbeads” namely those which contain polyethylene (PE), polypropyl-

ene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polytetrafluoro-

ethylene (PTFE) and nylon.

5. Carry a reusable shopping bag . A single plastic bag can take 1,000 years to degrade. Since the

plastic bag charge was introduced in England there’s been a 85% drop in their use.

Woodbridge Town Council is doing its best to cut back on waste and reduce plastics. Please let us

know what steps you are taking and any tips you have to reduce the use of plastics in daily life:

[email protected]
