Quick look: ● Welcome to Tara Jones ● Students out and about ● Book week 2019 is next week ● Board Elections

What a busy week in the life of the school: students running cross country in the park dodging showers, students learning outside the classroom and teachers learning inside their own classroom. I hope you have all had a restful weekend to recover.

Year 6 students meet a Kea at the zoo, Intermediates learning at the Writers Festival and school cross country at Melville Park. Meanwhile the term keeps on rolling. Welcome to Tara Jones (see top photo) who is teaching in Room 4. We love having you with us, Tara. We also welcome three new university students who are here for the next five weeks in Rooms 3, 6 and 8.

The Kids Lit quiz team had an exciting competition on Monday. Congratulations on an amazing result against some tough opposition. Many thanks to Jane who has coached and encouraged them over the last two terms. Continuing on the theme of books, start planning costumes for Book Week next week. Our annual parade gets better and better. Finally, please be considerate when stopping in the turning bay inside the school gate. This is for quick drop-offs/pick-ups only; no parking please. Board Elections A reminder that nominations close THIS Friday for the Board Elections. At this stage we have six nominations so there will be an election. A reminder of the key dates Friday 24th May – Nominations close at noon Wednesday 29th May – Voting papers and candidate information distributed Friday 7th June – Voting closes Thursday 13th June – Voting verified, and results announced Friday 14th June – New Board officially takes office Wednesday 18th June – Board meeting

Strike Action We have officially been notified that we are on strike Wednesday 29th May. As the majority of our staff are union members, we are closing the school for instruction. We do realise that this could be challenging. We have asked OSCAR to open, which they will do provided there is a minimum of 15 students attending (see below).

WEDNESDAY 29th MAY TEACHER STRIKE DAY

OSCAR Care have offered their services on this day. If you wish to enrol your child/ren, an enrolment form can be collected from the school hall, or you can email through to: [email protected] Enrolments will need to be in by Friday 24th May, and a minimum of 15 bookings will be needed to confirm this service. Please see Linda in the school hall if you require any further information.

We are looking forward to Book Week next week, and particularly the guest authors and of course our Character Parade. Please think about a favourite book character – no expense is necessary. Getting your children to be innovative with what is around home is a great thinking strategy and so much more creative.

This week and next there are several teams representing Kohia on the football pitch and basketball court; we thank the teachers and parents who are accompanying them.

We also hope the fruity sacks are proving popular with friends and family. See you in and around school – Alison and Catherine

The bottle top boxes are filling up! Thanks to everyone for supporting their houses by drinking heaps of milk!

Auckland Writers Festival Last week the Intermediates went to the Auckland Writers Festival. We saw three authors and one poet. Pauline (Vaeluga) Smith talked about the dawn raids that her book was based on. Joanna Grochowicz told us lots about Antarctica, and Sally Gardner showed us the difficulty of being a dyslexic writer. Luke Wright performed some truly amazing poems. The whole day was lots of fun and we all enjoyed it. – Kate P.

Lit Quiz

Yesterday our two teams competed in the Auckland heat of this international competition against 50 other teams. It was a lot of fun and educational, and also tiring as we had to concentrate and focus all morning. Both teams did well with Team 1 coming 4th after a really exciting finish. Thanks to Jane and the parents who supported us. – Rose

Team 1 – Kate P, Charlotte, Meika, Dylan

Team 2 – Jienhao, Rose, Valerie, Heidi

PTA Update

Second-hand uniform donations The second hand uniform cupboard is looking rather bare following the sale we had in Term 1. The PTA would appreciate donations of clean good quality school uniforms that are no longer needed. These will be sold at a sale later this term with all proceeds going towards our PTA fundraising for the year.

Spotlight on Sport

Basketball for Year 3 and 4 students Two wonderful KTS mums have volunteered to teach some interested Year 3 and 4 students basic basketball skills and rules in the hope that we may be able to enter a team into the local competition. These skill sessions will be on

Friday mornings from 8:00 to 8:30am in the school hall, starting this Friday. If you would like your child to attend please email Allison Shaw at [email protected]

Incredible opportunity for young Briar Ardern Last week Briar Ardern was fortunate to be invited to a dance workshop at the Civic Theatre hosted by Complexions Contemporary Ballet from New York. It was an incredible experience for a handful of New Zealand’s young Kiwi dancers. Briar even managed to get herself on ONE News.

Cross country Thank you to those who were able to come down and help set up the cross country course last week. We are lucky that we were able to get through all races just before the rain hit us all. Having access to Melville Park was great for the kids to be able to have a practice of the actual course before the big day and experience some real cross-country running with the small hills and muddy conditions. Ribbons will be presented this week at assembly. Sporting team results
