Great people making great music at a great University!!!

The world seems to be changing on a daily basis and the KSU Band Program is no exception. Assistant Director of Bands, Don Linn, will be departing us for the land of the Sooner as he takes a position as a Graduate Assistant with the OU Band Program. Mr. Linn will be working on his DMA in conducting and hopes to land a job as a Director of Bands upon completion of his degree. He has been an incredible person to me and our staff, great musician, teacher, conductor, and friend! Mr. Linn has been with us for the last 7 years and we will certainly miss him.

We would like to welcome our new Assistant Director of Bands to the K-State Band Family! Alex Wimmer is no stranger to K-State having completed his MM and P.h.D. while serving as a Graduate Assistant in our band program. His wife Anna and girls Addison, and Anora, are a very welcome addition to out “Band Family”

Once again, the entire K-State Band Program experienced a tremendous eventful year. The Wind Ensemble, Wind Symphony, Concert Band, and both Purple and Silver University Bands had some great concerts!! The Marching Band was better than ever 425 strong! The Cat Band, Volleyball Band, and Pub Crawl Bands had some great experiences and tournament trips as well!

We are planning another Wind Ensemble tour to the International Music Festival held at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., another bowl trip and many more exciting events for all ensembles. Our six Athletic Bands and 7 Concert Ensembles have had a tremendous year and we look forward to continue success and growth in all we do. This year looks to be another tremendous year for us with plenty of travel, guests, and opportunities designed to take you to new levels as a musician and a person. We are extremely proud of our program and students and we are excited to have you join us and contribute to “building the best band program” anywhere!

Please e-mail [email protected] and check our Drumline website for more information at: www.k-state.edu/band/thepride/drumline.htmlDrum line auditions will include prepared performance of material from the KSU Drum Line Handbook (available online), sight-reading, and an on-going assessment of progress during the camp. Individuals may audition on more than one instrument. All positions are open each year. Placement within the line is based largely on this audition process; therefore, gaining a position on an instrument of choice depends upon a successful audition.

Questions & AnswersThere are many tough decisions that a college freshman has to make. Some of the biggest ones involve what school to attend and what to study. Anoth-er important decision is whether or not to continue being involved in music in college by participating in bands, especially marching band. Here are some of the questions most often asked by parents and/or students who are considering joining one of the University Bands:

How do I become a member of the KSUMB?All bands at KSU are open to students from any major. High school band experience is the primary prerequisite for membership; however, any musical background will be of help in band (instrumental) admittance. AUDITION REQUIRED

Does the band provide instruments? For a nominal fee, ($35.00 a semester) the KSUMB provides piccolos, clarinets, saxophones, percussion, sousaphones, baritones, trumpets, trombones, mellophones, and flags. Instrument rental is payable to the KSU Bands. We also have some piccolos, flutes, clarinets, saxophones, oboes, bassoons, trumpets, trombones, euphoniums, tubas and percussion instruments, which are also available for the concert bands.

What do the University Bands have to offer me?University credit towards graduation is awarded for each semester of participation in the university bands. Band at KSU can also make your college years more meaningful and exciting, more than just going to classes and taking exams. You will experience lasting friendships, wonderful trips, spirit, and tremendous pride in one of the outstanding KSU bands available.

Are instrumental scholarships available?Yes. Awards are made each year based on academic record and musicianship. These awards are available to music majors and minors as well as to those students playing instruments of need.

Do I have to be a music major to play in one of the bands? Not at all! Over 75% of all band members are in some major other than music.

How do I become of member of one of the concert bands?Membership in Wind Ensemble, Wind Symphony, and Concert Band is based on auditions heard at the beginning of each semester. University Band is a non-audition group that meets in the spring semester only. Since there are several bands within the program, there will be an organization appropriate to your level of musicianship.

If I do not get involved in University Bands the first year, could I still participate later on?Of course; however, the trend is that if you put off participation, the odds are that you will probably never get involved due to a feeling of being “on the outside.”

2017-2018 Marching BandPlease do the following:

Will band participation take too much of my time? Not if you budget your time wisely. Studies have shown that students who participate in University Bands usually achieve high scholastic indexes. Our marching band rehearsal time, 3:30 PM-5:30 PM TuTH, is scheduled to avoid conflicts with most classes in all departments. If you have a potential class conflict, please contact Dr. Tracz. This time of day welcomes a change of pace!

Can I participate in music ensembles for no credit?Music ensembles are being offered on a variable credit (0, 1 credit hour) basis. Any student whose curriculum has a requirement for that ensemble (e.g., the music major’s major ensemble each semester; the music education two semester marching band requirement; four semesters of MUS 280 or MUS 480 Ensemble Performance for the BM instrumental option; etc.) must enroll for 1 credit hour and pay the fee. A music major who has completed the marching band requirement or is taking an additional ensemble beyond the major ensemble requirement may enroll in the additional ensemble(s) for 0 credit hour (e.g., the music major who is taking concert choir as the major ensemble for 1 credit hour (fee) may also elect to enroll in opera workshop and marching band for 0 credit hour (no fee)). Students who are not music majors may elect to enroll for either 0 credit hour (no fee) or 1 credit hour (fee).

Complete the Confirmation Form and the Marching Band Secondary Uniform Form and return, AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, BUT no later than July 1st!

When you complete the Marching Band Confirmation Form, you will be emailed the password to the Band webpage where you can download the pre-game & audition music at www.ksu.edu/band
