June 2017 Hitting the emotion wall When Mrs Gwen Waters learned of the improvement in the learning outcomes and emotional well being of children at Broadmeadows Primary School, she was very impressed. One of the more deprived areas in Melbourne, teachers and staff used neuroscience to help students thrive and flourish. The innovative program, and the results it achieved, gained attention around the world. Generous as always, Gwen Waters readily agreed that Jessica Anderberg, a teacher and art therapist at the school, was a fitting recipient of the 2017 John Waters Scholarship. Jessica feels most privileged and looks forward to putting her newfound counselling and psychotherapy skills into practice. A large number of students and communities around the world have benefitted from the generosity of the Waters family, and we again thank them for it. One of Australia’s most highly decorated pilots, he was known as a war hero, and as the man who flew under the Sydney Harbour Bridge. He was acknowledged as a publishing pioneer, and as a supporter of many good causes, Cairnmillar being one of them. He was a loyal supporter and mentor of the executive staff, and of the mission and objectives of the Institute. Prof Kathryn von Treuer Executive Director Cairnmillar on the move… Since I joined Cairnmillar over a year ago, we have been building on our tradition of excellence for treatment, education, and research. We are actively helping and treating a plethora of mental health issues facing people in our society, such as depression, addiction, and family violence, in urban and rural communities. Across our clinics, our partnerships, our diverse schools programs, and community involvement, the momentum is palpable. To ensure we continue to provide world class health care delivery and education, the council and executive of Cairnmillar have been aware of the ever increasing demands on an expanding and dynamic organisation. Given we have long outgrown our current premises, the search has been on for a new building to ensure Cairnmillar thrives and prospers into the future. All the hard work and strategic planning paid off earlier this year with the acquisition of a new building at Tooronga Road, Hawthorn East. It will be officially opened at the end of July and a warm invitation will be extended to all our friends, alumni, benefactors and supporters.

Cairnmillar on the move… Since I joined Cairnmillar over a year ago, we have been building on our tradition of excellence for treatment, education, and research. Farewell Assoc Prof Jane Power In February we farewelled Associate Professor Jane Power. She made an outstanding contribution to Cairnmillar since she first became involved almost 23 years ago. For the last six years, she has played a significant role in the School, particularly in the areas of teaching, learning, and professional engagement. She is recognised as an expert in her field and her contribution has helped shape the successful counselling and psychotherapy programs we offer today. Both staff and students hold Jane in the highest esteem, and to say ‘thank you’, is an inadequate way to express our appreciation.

Congratulations Dr Stephen Andrew Congratulations to the newly appointed co-ordinator of our counselling and psychotherapy programs, Dr Stephen Andrew, on the publication of his new book. The book is a guide for anyone who is interested in life-writing. In it he provides a pathway that draws from his own experience, observation, research, and reflection. The book will guide the reader to take life writing from the private into the public domain.

Homelessness – Who supports the supporter? The Executive Minister at St Michael's Uniting Church the Rev Ric Holland delighted staff, students, their families, and guests, at our recent Graduation Ceremony. He is well known in the field of social justice in Australia and in the United Kingdom. Previously the CEO of Melbourne City Mission, Melbourne’s oldest charity, he developed a range of programs for the homeless and led a team of professional and volunteer staff in providing services in the areas of education, justice, disability, palliative, and aged care.
