to bring together all parties interested in this important and topical subject.

With the continuing focus on cost cutting, longer asset lives and better efficiencies, many companies are looking for innovative materials that can complement or even replace the lubricants currently in use. Recent advances and traditional materials can all contribute towards an improved maintenance strategy.

Guidelines for Speakers: Authors are invited to submit papers or case study material on topics that are informative and current. The following subjects are a guideline only for the day’s programme. Any other suggestions, ideas or topics that could be associated with the subject, will be welcome:

Ultra-Lightweight Metal Materials

Materials

Materials design and use as an alternative to lubrication

Solid lubricants

Why surfaces and materials structures are important in lubricated components

Innovative use of materials in tribology

Coatings and other surface modification methods

Non-metallic materials that can reduce wear: rubber, polymers, ceramics, etc

Case studies or failure investigations of materials in tribological use

Please send a brief synopsis, and short title, of your proposed presentation or case study for approval, maximum 500 words, to the SAIT, email [email protected], [email protected] or fax to 086 719-2261 as soon as possible. We would like to circulate

the programme to a large target market to ensure a good attendance. Please include title, author and affiliation, and your contact details. The full paper, presentation or case study is required by 31

st July 2014.

The seminar is not a selling platform. Product promotional material or sales orientated videos should not be included in the presentations unless modified to provide only technical aspects.

For any enquiries regarding the technical nature of the seminar please contact David Beard on 082 850-3205, and for general enquiries phone Gill or Isabel at 011 804-3710

14 October 2014: Afternoon Seminar, ‘Hydraulics’ - call for papers:

The SAIT will present an afternoon seminar on “Hydraulics“, at Science Park, Northway, Kelvin on 14 October 2014. We are inviting interested persons to submit papers for this event. The seminar is intended to bring together all parties interested in this important and topical subject.

With the continuing focus on cost cutting, longer asset lives and better efficiencies, many companies should be seeking high performing, high efficiency anti wear hydraulic circulating fluids.

Guidelines for Speakers:

Hydraulics - Fit for a Queen

By Isabel Bradley, SAIT Assistant Secretary

During June 2014, Queen Elizabeth II of England rode to Whitehall for the Opening of Parliament in her new Diamond Jubilee Carriage. The carriage was an 80

th birthday

gift to the Queen by Australian Coachbuilder, W.J. Frecklington and was originally named the State Coach Britannia. Due to delays, it was delivered 8 years later than planned.

Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubiliee Carriage

The Queen’s new Diamond Jubilee Carriage is a tribological work of art, it contains historical artefacts that have been carved and polished to fit the carriage. Among these historically significant items are pieces of wood, taken from various sources including Henry VIII’s warship the Mary Rose and Sir Isaac Newton’s apple tree. These form wooden tiles, polished

to form part of the panelling on the inside doors.

The Interior of the Carriage, Showing The Wooden Tiles and Other Artefacts

A shard from The Stone of Destiny, which has been kept under the coronation chair in Westminster Abbey since its capture by Edward I of England in 1292, is displayed in a panel below the gold silk-covered seats, as are a bolt from a Spitfire, a musket ball from the battle of Waterloo and a fragment of a 617 Squadron Dambuster and various other fascinating items.

The Shard of the Stone of Destiny Under the Queen's Seat

The golden crown at the centre of the carriage’s roof is carved from oak taken off Nelson’s ship, HMS Victory and contains a ‘coachcam’ from which views of the crowds watching processions can be seen on the Queen’s Website.

The carriage has electric windows, lights and heaters – and six gold-plated hydraulic stabilizers, providing a smooth and gilded ride for its royal occupant.

The Oxford Dictionary offers, inter alia; ‘Hydraulics: liquid conveyed through pipes by pressure’, and ‘Hydraulic Press: a device in which the force applied to a fluid creates a pressure which when transmitted to a larger volume of fluid gives rise to a greater force’.. Such liquids are constantly in motion, flowing through tubes, pipes, flaps and wheels, and are therefore by definition a vast field of study within tribology. Fluids erode and corrode; they wear materials away and build up deposits on surfaces .

A stabiliser or shock-absorber, whether gold-plated or not, is a system that results in vehicle

moving smoothly over a rough road: liquid-filled cylinders absorb the energy of the springs’ bounce, thus calming the momentum.

Berry School's Old Mill and Water Wheel, Floyd County, Georgia, USA

Throughout history, man has sought to control the flow of liquids, and to use the energy in liquid to move seemingly immovable objects. The water wheel in all its many forms has been used for raising water from low-lying rivers to irrigate higher lands, as well as for grinding flower, pounding fibres for weaving into materials, and crushing wood for manufacturing paper.

In China, waterwheels powered the bellows of blast-furnaces that produced cast iron.

The flow of the Niagara River, upstream of the Falls, has been diverted to power huge turbines, generating electricity for large parts of Ontario, Canada and New York State, USA. This source of power was first used in 1759 when settler Daniel Jocaire built a small canal branching off the river to power a sawmill.

Hydraulic engineering has been used to remove excess water from mines and leaking ships since the days of Ancient Greece, as early as 300 BC.

The Archimedes Screw

Archimedes

Archimedes is said to have invented the water screw, now known as the Archimedes Screw, during the 3

rd Century

BC. His is more complex than the

version attributed to an Assyrian king,

Sennacherib (704 - 681BC), approximately 350

earlier.

Since Archimedes’ time, the water screw has been used to move water to irrigation ditches, and to drain land under the sea in the Netherlands and for many other purposes. It was used in 2001 in the successful stabilisation of the Leaning Tower of Pisa by

British soils Engineer John Burland. The screw is used in sewage treatment plants, snow blowers – and in chocolate fountains.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa

The Ancient Romans developed many hydraulic systems: supplying public water via aqueducts, watermills for grinding or pounding, drainage of mines, and public and private plumbing. Under-floor heating was made possible by warming water and pumping it through pipes under the tiled floors of Roman villas

Roman Baths at Welwyn Gardens City, UK.

Braking systems in modern vehicles, hydraulic jacks that hold boot lids open or prop up a car while the wheel is being changed, shock absorbers, cooling systems – the uses of hydraulics are many and varied. Hydraulic fracturing of rocks, known as ‘fracking’, used in the search for natural gas and oil, is currently a controversial topic in South Africa and many other parts of the world.

Even the human body employs hydraulic pumps and pressure systems to move blood, gases and other fluids between cells.

Considering the ancient history behind them, it is fitting that the rolling museum of British history, the Queen’s new Diamond Jubiliee Carriage, is fitted with gold-plated hydraulic stabilizers.
