Hello again everyone, It’s been a cold but busy winter for me. We’ve just returned from a week in the snow and believe it or not, there was a Weimaraner roaming around having a ball in the cold conditions. Great to see. Now that our Gundog Working Test and Retrieving Trial are out the way, the next item on the agenda is the Puppy/Fun Day on 11th August at SACA Park – more details further on in the magazine. It’s really great to see some puppies around again and there’s no shortage of people wanting to cuddle them. I’m really looking forward to it. We have had a good influx of new members into the club too as a result of all the baby puppies arriving at once. It will be a really good afternoon for all ages of people and dog so make sure you keep it free and come along for some real doggy fun. After that, our next event is the Weimaraner judging at the Adelaide Royal Show. It looks like we have quite a few interstate exhibitors coming over for the event so it could be quite a showdown! It will be good to catch up with everyone again. The judging isn’t expected to be on for our breed until well after lunch on Sat 8/9/07 so if you have the day or afternoon free, see if you can pop in and watch. The day after the Royal is the Wei Club Championship Show to be held at SACA Park. It will be on during the afternoon and our judge this year is a gundog lady from WA, Natasha Ryan. So it’s going to be a very busy Wei weekend. Hope to see a few new faces out there too. There’s a feeling that spring is just around the corner …. Hooray. Until next time, keep your Weis warm and entertained. Ingrid Matschke President

BEGINNERS TEST. Ten dogs entered the Beginners Test and it was good to see a couple of new faces amongst the handlers with their Labrador dogs.

The first run was a bird thrown at about 40 meters landing on a mud bank on the edge of a large dam. The dogs were to run through some splashy water and on to the mud bank. Only two dogs completed this run. Most dogs who marked the bird were completely confused once they came out of the splashy water. The Judge is re viewing his thoughts on putting on this run.

The second run was a mark thrown into the dam. The dogs saw the mark from behind a small bank a short way from the water. A swim of approximately 10 meters was required. Both remaining dogs completed the run.

Many of the handlers including the new starters did not have control over their dogs in the heel work and at the firing point. This unsteadiness contributed to the dogs inability to mark the bird.

NOVICE STAKE

A cold and windy outlook met the 12 Novice competitors on a recent Sunday morning at Prospect Hill. The first mark for the day was cast from behind a dam wall some 60 metres uphill from the firing point with the game landing between tussocks. With a strong cross wind, most dogs cast upwind from the area of fall and those with their noses switched on, quickly located the game and returned promptly to their handlers. A number of dogs did not recognise the scent on the way out and worked too deep initially, but returned to hunt the cover and were successful in the retrieve. The second bird to retrieve was cast some 100 metres from the firing point, landing in a tussocky undulating area across a small creek. The dogs were sent from a raised area of the paddock and from behind a line of reedy clumps which most dogs tended to skirt rather than take a direct line through the cover to the bird. The terrain beyond this cover was quite open ,resulting in some dogs hunting short and checking small patches of cover throughout the area. A number of dogs marked the depth of fall well, and quickly retrieved the game, while a number who ran off line climbed a steep hill (in mountain goat fashion) to the left of the control area and short of the fall of game. Six dogs remained for the final retrieve, which was a high mark landing in a large dam around 70metres from the control point which was located in a reed bed at one end of the dam. Handlers were required to sit on a seat with their dog alongside, then stand to fire a shot which signalled the steward to cast the bird into the water. A couple of dogs were unsteady on this run, but most were prepared to face the cover and swim strongly to locate the bird and return. My winner on the day was very consistent , marked well, was steady , attentive and went about her work with style. There was some good dog work evident during the trial and I believe the potential is there to improve during the year. It was a pleasure to judge the Novice Stake and I thank my many stewards on the day for their assistance. Congratulations to Jessie, Lynne and the Weimaraner Club committee for continuing to promote the sport and encourage Novice competitors. Grooming

Although they are short coated dogs, Weimaraners do require regular grooming. They should be brushed each day with a rubber curry comb to remove dead coat and promote healthy skin. Ears need to be cleaned daily on puppies and checked weekly with adults. When cleaning ears use a tissue and be careful not to dig too deeply into the ear. Nails should be clipped fortnightly.

Exercise

Do not exercise your puppy hard until it is about twelve months old. Let him set his own pace - never force him until he is fully developed as this may cause structural damage to his bones. If you exercise your dog in a 'grass seed' area (especially areas with barley grass), always check his ears and toes for grass seeds when you leave.

House Training

A puppy must start house training as soon as he arrives home. Place your puppy outside immediately after every feed, after playing, early in the morning, late at night and after each sleep. Take him to the same spot each time, stay with him, and praise him when he obliges, then take him back inside again. Don't punish mishaps. Clean up any mess in the house with a rag or paper and spray the area with vinegar to deter him from using the same spot again.

Training Weimaraners need obedience training. Formal training with an obedience club can take place from about four months of age (provided your dog's vaccinations are complete). At an obedience club, the trainers will not train your dog for you - but will teach you how to train your dog and show you exercises you and your dog can do to develop obedience skills. However there is some elementary training that you can start as soon as your puppy has settled in. Many doggie books have sections specifically dealing with training. Probably the first essential is that your puppy should be able to walk happily on a lead. Remember though that training should be fun and that you should not expect too much from your puppy to start with. Understand that your puppy is learning all the time and it is important that he learns the right things - the behaviour that is acceptable. A puppy might look cute sitting on a lounge but, unless you are prepared to have a 35 - 40 Kg adult Weimaraner doing the same thing, then you should actively discourage this behaviour right from the start (or love it and live with it as I do!). You must set the rules and enforce them consistently. If your puppy chews something that it shouldn't (your shoes, car seats, electric cords etc.) you should not only remove the debris but should replace it with an acceptable chew toy (nyla-bone, raw hide chew etc.) to satisfy the puppy's natural desire to chew. When training, either for obedience trials or just to teach your Weimaraner "social skills" it is essential that you be consistent and that training should be positive and enjoyable. Some Vets now conduct Puppy Pre-School classes and, whilst these may be a good chance to socialize your puppy with others, remember that you are the boss. Don't let any-one or another dog upset your puppy. Enjoy your dogs Jessie Hughes

Melamine suspected of killing hundreds of US pets

02 May 2007 From New Scientist Print Edition Andy Coghlan

It has become one of the more mysterious food poisoning scandals of recent times. The first hint of something wrong came when 14 cats and a dog died after wolfing down hearty meals of "cuts in gravy" pet food. Soon thousands of pets across the US had fallen ill, most from kidney failure. All are thought to have been poisoned by a contaminant in feed imported from China. However, six weeks on from the first cases, no one can yet be sure what the poison is.

On 15 March a Canadian-based pet food manufacturer notified the US Food and Drug Administration that animals had been dying after eating its products. The following day, popular brands of pet food were withdrawn across the US while the FDA began its search for the cause.

The prime suspect for the killer ingredient is an industrial chemical called melamine, an organic base usually found in plastics and resins. The FDA has examined 210 samples of pet food and various ingredients in six field laboratories. Of those, 130 have tested positive for melamine, either in the food itself or in the wheat gluten used to thicken the gravy accompanying it. Researchers at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, have found melamine crystals in urine and kidney tissue taken from some of the dead cats.

How melamine might have got into the pet food remains controversial. The FDA says it originated in wheat gluten and rice protein concentrate imported from China that was added to the pet food by US manufacturers. American journalists have since reported that factory owners in China have admitted to routinely adding melamine to such products to boost their nitrogen content, and so make it appear that they contain more protein that they actually do. China explicitly banned this practice on 26 April, though officials dispute any suggestion that melamine from their country could have been responsible for killing America's pets.

Some of the melamine detected by the FDA could be a breakdown product of another contaminant. Cyromazine is a commonly used pesticide that is chemically similar to melamine and can be converted into melamine when fed to animals. This has led to suggestions that cyromazine residues on the wheat and rice products are responsible for the poisoning. That does not, however, explain the melamine already in the wheat and protein products sent from China.

A third suspect is cyanuric acid, a chemical that is added to swimming pools to stop light destroying chlorine too quickly and which has also been identified by the FDA in some of the pet food samples. One possibility is that the cyanuric acid was created by bacteria in the rice and wheat consignments. Klebsiella bacteria are known to be able to convert melamine into cyanuric acid, while other bacteria create it by breaking down the widely used herbicide atrazine, which could have been sprayed on wheat and rice crops grown in China. The problem with this theory is that while cyanuric acid can cause cancer in animals exposed to it long-term, swallowing a few doses should cause nothing more serious than an irritation of the gut.

So the finger of suspicion swings back to melamine, even though Chinese officials protest the chemical's innocence. They may have a point. A literature search shows that the only ill effect of melamine so far identified is its ability to cause bladder cancer in animals given large doses over long periods. What's more, this has only been observed in rats (Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology, vol 5, p 294), and occurs indirectly, as crystals of the chemical seed the growth of bladder stones that then trigger the growth of tumours. Melamine has never been shown to produce the kidney damage seen in most of the affected pets in the US. For now, it seems, the cat and dog killer remains at large.
