EAA Chapter 65 visits Ottawa Chapter 245’s Fly-In On Sunday June 22, EAA Chapter 245 of Ottawa held their annual Fly-In event. Ken Potter, the event coordinator, and Philip Johnson, Chapter President, invited EAA Chapter 65 - Stoney Creek to attend the event. A few of the members decided to make a weekend out of it and already headed out to Rockcliffe Airport (CYRO) on Friday afternoon. William and Walter in the Jodel and Peter in his Cessna 172. Their flight took 2.5 hours and was smooth flying all the way.

On Saturday, our Chapter President, Aldo and George headed out to Rockcliffe in Aldo’s Vintage 50-year-old Cessna 150. Ramon and Brooke headed out in Ramon’s Cessna 150. Both groups ultimately headed for our final destination of Carp Airport (CYRP) where Chapter 245 is based. Joe and Marcus headed out Sunday morning in Joe’s Cardinal RG, making the trip direct to Carp in 1 hour and 40 minutes in incredibly smooth air. The fly-in was attended by over 60 aircraft of all shapes and sizes. There were hundreds of people in attendance throughout the day and the weather was as good as it gets. Our hosts put together a great breakfast and even provided a pizza break after noon.

Young Eagles flights were being offered during the day in a couple of EAA 245’s aircraft. EAA 65’s Frank Shaw was in Ottawa on business and drove in to the event, just in time to drive Walter to the Hospital for a four-day stay as guest of the Ottawa General Hospital with a very aggressive infection.

During the flight home, we encountered some weather from outside of Ottawa to Rice Lake. Joe decided to climb above the clouds and take advantage of the smooth air at 10,500’. The Cardinal hit a maximum speed of 169kts (312km/h) on the slow 500fpm descent back down to 2,500’ as we passed through Toronto’s Airspace. The trip home taking only 1 hour and 39 minutes. That speedy “express train” came in handy again 4 days later when Joe and William went back to Ottawa to pick up our “Good-as-new” Walter from the Hospital.

Buddy Flight · Sunday July 6 Pictures by Aldo Campodonico On Sunday July 6th, three planes of our EAA Chapter 65 decided to make a trip out to Centralia, Ontario.

Walter and William flew in Walter’s Jodel. Aldo and George flew in Aldo’s Vintage Cessna 150 and Peter flew his Cessna 172. If you would like to join the club for a Buddy Flight, contact our Director of Operations, William, before Sunday morning. There’s usually a plane with a seat available and a pilot that would gladly accept a free lunch!

Around the Club Ed Doyle is back on his feet again and has been spotted around the club in the last couple of weeks. Ed captured a few photographs with Eric Brent of Airvision Adventures operating the tow machine for Parasailing instruction. Check out Airvision on the web at: www.airvisionadventures.ca

Trevor Yaworski is seen here working on the Horizontal Stabilizer of his Murphy Rebel. He’s already made good progress and has moved on to his wings. Go Trevor!

July Chapter Meeting Peter Meszaros will talk about his gliding holiday in the French Alps. He returned last week and reported that he flew daily in two seater sailplanes with flights lasting 4 to 7 hours in length… that’s why the two seater… no auto pilots on sailplanes. These flights covered hundreds of kilometers and he’s got great pictures to go along with the trip details. Should be an interesting presentation! In addition, we will be presenting the monthly July EAA Chapter Video Magazine that has been specifically produced by EAA Oshkosh for presentation at the monthly meetings. We should have great last minute details regarding the upcoming Oshkosh Airventure extravaganza.

Transport Canada Seminar: The annual Transport Canada Seminar will take place on Saturday, September 27, 2014. This will once again focus on issues of interest to homebuilders. Agenda and program to follow shortly.

Pinch-Hitter course The pinch-hitter course, which is designed to familiarize the non pilot flying companion with basic aircraft operations is still pending, but scheduling has been a problem. So far we have 7 people interested, but we’d like to get at least 6 people who can agree on the course date to make this viable. If you know of someone interested in attending, please let the Programs Director know. The course will take place on a Saturday morning and be taught by Sue Davidson. NO spouses or flying partners of enrolled students allowed in the classroom. This is for the non flying companions only. A good article that talks about the pinch-hitter course can be found here: www.avweb.com/news/safety/181598-1.html

Flight to East Coast Past president, Dale McCrum, has invited us to visit with him at his new home with a private grass strip in St. Stephen, New Brunswick. If you are interested in flying, let the Programs Director, Joe Brunski know so that we may organize a group flight to visit with Dale and to see local east coast sites. [email protected]

You might notice that there are a number of security cameras inside and outside of the

hangars and clubhouse. We have installed a new State-of-the-art security

System complete with day and Night Infra-Red high resolution

Cameras, a couple of Digital Video Recorders with 3 Terabytes of data storage and remote

monitoring. The data storage capacity allows us to record over a month of video at a time. The

systems are installed in impenetrable strong-boxes with 3-day battery backups.

Peace of mind!

July Birthdays July 4: Allan Blain. July 6: Alojz Mihelcic. July 12: Peter Carter. July 17: Jack Ridge.

The Bittner 4 Some of our members are unfortunately less mobile than others and don’t often have the ability to come and visit us at the Club or attend our monthly meetings. In these cases it’s nice to have the ability to visit with them vicariously through the Newsletter, the Website or Facebook.

Helen Bittner was nice enough to write and send in a few photographs for our enjoyment. Helen’s husband Wilf, an EAA 65 Life Member, built a Jodel back in the early days of EAA. Helen and Wilf had both earned their wings back in British Columbia. After 5 years of flying the Jodel, Wilf decided to sell it and build a four-seat aircraft of his own design. By 1975, the “Bittner 4” was a reality. Soon after, a reporter heard about the aircraft and got an opportunity to fly in it. He submitted a story and photographs to “Jane’s - All the World’s Aircraft” and Editor John W.R. Taylor printed it, acknowledging that it was the first 4-seat Canadian designed Homebuilt Aircraft to fly!

Eventually, Wilf added fiberglass floats to the plane so that they could take off and land in front of their house. Wilf and Helen have both stopped flying now, but Wilf flew that same Bittner 4 until he was 84 years old! Both of them say HI to all of the Club members, especially Eric, Russ and Gloria. Thanks for the pictures, Helen! Hi back to you and Wilf from all of us at EAA 65!
