Newsletter July 2013
SUMMER’S HERE –
Planters Days 2013 was a busy time for the museum – The bingo went
well with a lot of work from the members, and I would like to thank
them for a job well done! The bingo was well attended with over 100
players this year! Lots of prizes; cash, gift cards and merchandise
for the bingo games, balloon bust and raffle. I would like to thank
all the businesses and people who donated these prizes that made it
a successful event. If you missed the bingo this year, mark your
calendar for June 20th, 2014. Our regular meeting date falls on
July 4th so it has been cancelled and the next meeting will be the
first day of August. We are looking for people to man the museum on
Saturdays and I would like to see some volunteers. You don’t have
to know much as we will place you with a person that is familiar
with the history part. We would like to have 2 people in there at
all times the museum is open.
Coming up this fall is the Annual Membership Meeting October 3rd.
This is the meeting where the officers for 2014 are elected. Also
if there are any changes that need to be made to the by-laws, then
it needs to get to the by-laws committee before that meeting.
All officer positions (President, Vice President, Secretary, and
Treasurer) are up for election as they are 1 year terms. Director’s
position #1 and #2 are up at the end of the year, so we will have
to re-elect them or replacements. This is a 2 year term. The
remaining directors are on 2 year terms which end 12/31/14. It is
imperative for the continuity of the museum to get involvement from
the community and individuals interested in preserving the history
of Woodland and the Lewis River area.
The grounds have been maintained by Wayne Stenlund, and John Stark
so I would like to thank them for keeping the place inviting! Also,
thanks to the volunteers for the hard work putting in the new
fences, sprinkler system, and plants.

It’s been a busy spring for the Fundraising Committee. After our
March garage sale thoughts immediately turned to the Plant/Yard
Sale which was held May 10th & 11th. We didn’t have as many
yard sale items but it was a good 2-day sale and we thank those who
donated. The museum board voted to purchase 2 canopies, so “JJ”
picked them up from Costco, made the weights, set them up and they
worked great – thanks “JJ”.
The “free” White Elephant Bingo on the 1st Saturday Socials were
fun although the attendance wasn’t what we had hoped. John Stark
called the numbers and winners liked the “white elephant prizes”.
We have discontinued them for the summer and a decision will be
made later about continuing.
The Planters Days Bingo was a fun time – the number of balloons for
the Balloon Bust was up to 80 this year and made for a festive
atmosphere. We also had the new hot dog cooker which worked great.
We had a good night taking in more than last year. Coming up with
75 – 80 balloon bust prizes can be difficult. We want them to be
new and valued at least $5. It would help if throughout the year
(especially after Christmas) if you see an item on sale that would
make a good balloon bust prize - pick it up and donate it to the
museum for the bingo. We also collect other items throughout the
year to use in bingo baskets. Thanks to Joyce Carlson for her
artistic talents in putting the baskets together. Thanks also to
Louise Bozorth in going out the last days for more donations.
As part of the city-wide garage sale on August 3rd the museum will
also have a sale on both Friday and Saturday. Donations for this
sale would be appreciated – no clothing other than ‘like new’
clothes. If you have items to donate you can leave a message at the
Visitors Center 225- 9552 or call me at 225-5640.
We don’t have a quilt to raffle this year but we will be doing a
large Christmas basket to raffle with the drawing at the Snowflake
Bazaar.

PLANTERS DAYS BINGO
The annual museum sponsored Planters Days Bingo was held Friday
night, June 14th. There were a total of 21 games played with 9 cash
games and 12 games with basket/merchandise prizes. Thanks to the
generosity of individuals and businesses we had 30 bingo baskets,
80 balloon bust prizes, 30 raffle prizes and 3 fishing rods for the
silent auction (2 donated by G. Loomis and 1 donated by Lamiglas).
Sixteen of the basket/merchandise prizes were won during regular
play and the remaining 14 baskets were drawn as raffle
prizes.
A big “Thank You” to the following individuals and businesses whose
donations helped make the Planters Days Bingo a success and to
Louise Bozorth for her last minute push for donations.

DAIRY OPEN HOUSE
On April 20, 2013, the Woodland Historical Museum held a special
open house honoring dairy farmers from the Woodland area, both past
and present. The event was attended by about 100 people. It was
good to see so many dairy families represented. People came from
all over with some families represented by 3 and 4 generations of
former dairymen. It was a chance for people, many who had not seen
each other for 50 or 60 years, to become reacquainted and talk
about old times.
A cake was served that had a copy of the Guild family farm from the
1930’s on it. The original picture is hung in the museum along with
other dairy memorabilia and pictures.
Former Cowlitz County Dairy Princesses and others helped churn
butter under the skilled hands of Joan Zumstein and Joann Thomas.
Most of us had our turn at churning butter at one time or another,
but did not remember the details of making and handling the butter
after it was made. The butter churn used was authentic first used
by Mary Gardner Olson, one of the first Gardner Family pioneers,
who came to Woodland about 1853. The fresh homemade butter was
available to taste on fresh baguette bread. Samples also were
available for guests to take home.
Dairy Princesses that attended the event were Margaret Ferguson
Beck - 1961, Nancy Bauer Troyer - 1963, Lucille Witt Tubbs - 1967,
Eileen Witt Soli - 1969. Princesses unable to attend were April
Leathers Heasley - 1965, Melva Rieck Thomas - 1966, and Kathy Witt
Wisbeck - 1978. Woodland has been well represented over the years
in this area.
Two dairy people that will be 100 this year were recognized: Byron
Ferguson and Mrs. Katherine Lutzenberger. Byron’s younger brother,
Charles also attended the function. He is only 96.
The Ferguson Brothers dairy and the Donald Brothers dairy are the
only 2 remaining dairy farms in operation in Cowlitz County.
The Woodland Museum is working on a book about the dairy industry
in the Woodland area. The book will include generic information and
stories of the dairy industry. It will also include articles of
each dairy family that ever lived in the Woodland area. Your help
is needed. We have a questionnaire to be completed or used as a
guide towards writing your families story. We would like a separate
story on each generation. If no one in your family wants to write
their story, please complete the questionnaire and return it to us,
so we can include your family in our book.
To date we have about 150 names of people that operated dairies in
the Woodland area – and the list is not complete. Please help us by
giving us additional names that you may remember.
Contact person for the information or a copy of the questionnaire
is Rosaly Bauer Divens, 360-607- 7200. Email address:
[email protected]. Your help is important to make this book as
complete as possible.

Do You Remember? - The year was 1962
The big news in 1962 was the destructive Columbus Day Storm where
storm loss in the Woodland area was estimated to exceed one-half
million dollars (1962 values). Trees were uprooted, roofs blown
off, windows blown out, buildings demolished by the 100+ mph winds.
The dairymen in the Bottoms were extremely hard hit - barns and
outbuildings were demolished, cattle lost and milk had to be dumped
without power for refrigeration. Woodland, Kalama and the Lewis
River areas were plunged into darkness at 4:55 pm Friday when winds
smashed a pair of transmission towers. Reconstruction of a half
mile of transmission line was required. The Alibi Café had natural
gas cooking and steam table so was able to continue providing
service. The Hummel’s Union Station put out 5500 gals. of gasoline
during the power outage using improvised small gasoline-powered
motors to pump gas. (Lewis River Review) Where were you during the
Columbus Day Storm? Ask your neighbors – there are lots of stories
out there.
