A lack of confidence and the presence of anxiety can get in the way of unlocking the potenal that every child possesses. I have found that developing a sense of humour in everyday conversaons is a wonderful way of forming sound relaonships that are another key to learning. I would like to comment on two of the competencies that are listed: Curiosity and Sense of Wonder. A student said to me this week We have had a lot of rain Mr Mooney. How do you know how much rain we have had? I oſten see a lady on television talking about how much rain we have had ”. I really like being asked quesons like this because it gives an opportunity to develop new learning within a scienfic framework. I told the student that if one millimetre of rain falls on one square metre of a roof or on the ground, that adds up to one litre of water. The student said How did you know that?I said Thats how the measure was set in France a long me ago”. We drew a shed that was five metres wide and three metres long. We worked out that the roof was fiſteen square metres. On Tuesday, 20 mm of rain fell on the shed roof. This added up to 300 litres (eg 15 x 20). The student said Wow! Thats a lot of water”. It is surprising how a student can learn a concept of area and volume if given a praccal example of how to work it out. I gave the student a queson to take home If 30 mm of rain fall on a playground that measures 20 m x 50 m, how many litres fell on that playground?I encourage parents/guardians to discuss this queson with students and send me your answer. STUDENT ENROLMENT INFORMATION FORM

Student enrolment information forms have been sent home with all students.

Please ensure that the information on these forms are correct and make amendments where necessary, sign and return to the school office as soon as possible. Please return these forms,

signed, even if there are no changes.

Thank you to all the parents who have already returned these forms.

On page 6 of our Student Planner, a number of student personal competencies are listed. These personal development attributes are a key foundation to many learning programs at Emerson. A lack of confidence and the presence of anxiety can get in the way of unlocking the potential that every child possesses. I have found that developing a sense of humour in everyday conversations is a wonderful way of forming sound relationships that are another key to learning. I would like to comment on two of the competencies that are listed: Curiosity and Sense of Wonder. A student said to me this week “We have had a lot of rain Mr Mooney. How do you know how much rain we have had? I often see a lady on television talking about how much rain we have had”. I really like being asked questions like this because it gives an opportunity to develop new learning within a scientific framework. I told the student that if one millimetre of rain falls on one square metre of a roof or on the ground, that adds up to one litre of water. The student said “How did you know that?” I said “That’s how the measure was set in France a long time ago”. We drew a shed that was five metres wide and three metres long. We worked out that the roof was fifteen square metres. On Tuesday, 20 mm of rain fell on the shed roof. This added up to 300 litres (eg 15 x 20). The student said “Wow! That’s a lot of water”. It is surprising how a student can learn a concept of area and volume if given a practical example of how to work it out. I gave the student a question to take home “If 30 mm of rain fall on a playground that measures 20 m x 50 m, how many litres fell on that playground?” I encourage parents/guardians to discuss this question with students and send me your answer. Value of the Week

We will continue our studies on the value, Respect, next week. When we practice being respectful we make people feel valued. If we did not respect the laws of society there would be chaos. Our classroom rules keep us safe and provide a sense of order. This allows us to make the most of every opportunity that Emerson School provides for us. This is a poem on respect written by Don Wilson RESPECT Respect is a lesson that everyone should learn Respect must be given before an expected return Respect is something that’s given for free Respect is about us and never about me Respect is the basis on which relationships are founded Respect is the anchor that keeps a person well grounded Respect builds the character and defines who we are Respect sets the standard and raises the bar Respect is magnanimous and helps to fulfil Respect is the partner that sits with good will Respect is like honey so sweet it’s perceived Respect, a taste to savour for when it’s received

SCHOOL PHOTO DAY INFORMATION We have our School Photo day on the Tuesday 3rd March. Your child will receive an envelope that has information on it to help you order your photographs. Ordering can be done in 3 ways:

You can order directly through our site at MSP.com.au, to do this you will need a shoot-key code that will be located on your envelope.

If you wish to pay with cash please select the photo pack you would like and tick the box on the order form on the envelope and place the money in the pocket. The pocket can be sealed by removing the tape on the inner surface. Please return the envelope to your school office as soon as you can. Through the parent's Compass Portal: This will initially appear in their feed and you will receive a notification that ordering is active. Once you have clicked on it once it will then be removed from the main feed. You can then access photo ordering through the community icon. Further instructions for parents on ordering through compass can be found at https://www.compass.education/guide#photos .

FAQ’s by parents: How long do I have to order photos? Parents have 2 weeks post photo day to order before incurring a $20 late fee. Do I need to return the envelope if I have ordered online? No, Envelopes are only required to be brought back if the family is paying cash. It is important you use your own child’s envelope as each Shootkey is unique to each child. If you misplace your envelope the school office has spare blank envelopes for you to use, but you must request your Shootkey code from them to help with your ordering and payments.

SAILORS WITH DISABILITIES

MSJ ventured out on Monday to Docklands to go sailing with Sailors with Disabilities. This was an excellent opportunity for the students to step out of their comfort zone and try something new. They arrived at Docklands at 11:45, had lunch in the park outside the Library and then played on the adventure playground and also played kick to kick with a football.

When it was time to board the yacht the students where shown how to put on the self inflating life jackets and then hesitantly boarded the yacht. It didn’t take long for the students to feel more at ease and everyone had a turn of steering and grinding the sail. The students were taught how to tack and grind in the sail and even performed donuts in the water. It was amazing how tightly the yacht could turn. The students became so confident that some of them laid down and looked over the side at the many jelly fish in the water. Then when asked who would like to go on the front deck all the students had the courage to stand and walk along the side edge of the yacht to the front. This is where Estelle played out a scene from Titanic, pictured upper right of this paragraph. Luckily for MSJ the voyage had a different ending as there were no icebergs, the weather was fantastic and all the students returned safely to land with huge smiles on their faces.

Blackwood Camp 2020 Between Monday 10th and Friday 14th February, twenty lucky students from MSA, MSB, MSC and MSD went on a two night camp to

Blackwood Outdoor Education Centre.

The first group of students started their camp with a hike at Shaw’s Lake, on this hike the students hiked up a large hill and then

hiked down a very rocky path. The students also got to try some fresh mineral water… which wasn’t very nice. Then for dinner we

had a BBQ cooked by Jayden. After dinner we had a go at archery.

On day two, we travelled to Ballarat to visit Sovereign Hill. We found gold in the creek and when watching the gold pouring display,

all the students were very lucky to have the opportunity to hold a $230,000 gold bullion. For dinner we visited Pizza Hut, where the

students enjoyed all you can eat pizza, pasta and dessert. When we got back to camp we went for a night walk.

On our third and final day most of the students enjoyed going on the high ropes and zip line, before heading back to school and

home for a restful night sleep.

On the morning of the second day, Harley and Talyn were Blackwood SSOEC radio stars. They spoke to Kathy from Apple FM 98.5.

Afterwards, they headed to Sovereign Hill where the second group enjoyed olden day bowling and going down into one of the

mines. After visiting Sovereign Hill they enjoyed a trip to the park and dinner at Pizza Hut.

On the final day, they went on a very long bush walk, before heading back to school.
