SPE KFUPM President

On behalf of all KFUPM SPE student chapter officers and

members, I would like to wel-come you to our world. In this

newsletter you can find the chapter’s most re-cent and most recognized endeavors, such as meetings, conferences, short courses, field trips,

projects, and research.

The Society of Petroleum Engineers is the indus-

10 KFUPM students participated in the International

Petroleum Conference in Qatar. The students have en-

joyed witnessing new technologies, cost-effective pro-

cedures, and innovative solutions at the conference‟s

exhibition. Also, the students have gained a better un-

derstanding about the general picture of the petroleum

industry through attending panel discussions and lis-

tening to the industry leaders. In addition, students

were able to form new friendships with their future

colleagues.

SAOGE 2009

On November 3, one faculty member and

three students from SPE-KFUPM Stu-

dent Chapter delivered a presentation at

the 2nd Saudi Arabia International Oil and

Gas Conference and Exhibition (SAOGE

2009). Dr. Kumar talked about student

statistics, facilities, and the exchange pro-

gram at KFUPM. Then, Mohammed Al-

Gazal talked about students‟ impressions

of the petroleum industry. After that, Ay-

men AlArfag and Essam AlGoumum

talked about career paths in the petro-

leum industry.

Then, industry representatives gave an

overview of career opportunities at the

petroleum industry and answered ques-

tions. In the end, students were given a

tour at the exhibit and allowed time to

meet with companies of their choices. It

worth to mention that 47 SPE member

participate in this events from KFUPM

Chapter and it considered as the largest

number of students visited the conference

during the 3 days of the conference. KFUPM Participates at ATCE 2009 A group of five senior students at KFUPM participated in ATCE 2009, New Orleans, US in Oct 4-7. The group consisted of two chap-

ter officers, Ali Al-Shafai, the 2009-2010 chapter„s president and

Waleed Al-Isawi, the Vic-President of the chapter and three out-standing members of KFUPM section: Ahamed Abdul Jabar, Abdul-

Rahmad Al Netaifi and Hussain Al-Zahraini.

The group enjoyed a wide range of activities offered by the SPE stu-dent outreach. The student program started on Oct 4 with Student

chapter officers‟ workshop to Student Welcome coffee and student

general session to student recruiting and networking fair session.

On Oct. 5, the students participated in petro Bowl competition. This event was an opportunity for students to share common concerns and

goals.

WPC 2009, Paris From the 18th to the 20th November 2009, Les Pyramides

in Paris was buzzing with 1,200 young professionals, stu-

dents and experts from 110 countries actively debating

their future. Three SPE KFUPM members participated in

this event to reflect the consciousness and solicitude of

energies our industry future.

The high level panelists for the keynote plenary sessions

reflected regional, gender and industry diversity. CEO‟s

debated with academics, NGO‟s, young professionals, stu-

dent bodies, international organizations, think tanks, man-

agement consultancies.

From the high level plenary sessions, delegates were able

to enjoy a deep dive into fundamental issues in the highly

participative and interactive workshops, where new ideas

were flowing. Or else, they could network and share best practices in the informal atmosphere of the Knowledge

Cafés over a drink, food and even some other challenging activities to cement new connections!

Qabas Al-Kalij Lab Visit

Qabas Al-Khalij. A

company specialized in coring analysis. The visit

started with a short introduction about the com-

pany beginnings, departments and giving a gen-

eral Idea about their work. After that we went in

tour in there labs, we saw the process of core ana-

lyzing form the beginning of cutting the cores,

cleaning it , preparing it , until testing it and get-

ting the data to analyze it . At the end of the visit

we have a dissection about what we saw in the

tour and answering any question about the tech-

nology used in these labs .

TAMQ VISIT REPORT On December 6,

a group of

KFUPM stu-

dents paid a visit

to their Aggies

counterparts at

Texas A&M

University at

Qatar. The SPE-

TAMQ officers

welcomed the KFUPM students and discussed

with them common goals and concerns. After

that, a KFUPM student, Mohammed Al-

Ghazal, delivered a presentation that high-

lighted the petroleum engineering department

at KFUPM and the Saudi petroleum industry.

“One eighth of the wheels that are turning

around the world are because of the Saudi Oil

reserves, but when it comes to gas Qatar holds

the lion‟s share,” Mohammed said. Finally,

the group toured the university‟s offices and

facilities.

BBQ Welcoming Party On October 22nd, SPE KFUP organized gathering day for the SPE mem-

bers and non SPE member in the petroleum department. The party held

under name “BBQ Welcoming Party” the main reason of the party was to

educated and introduce the new student in the department about SPE and

motivate them to participate in the future activities by the SPE KFUPM

chapter. The number attended the party is the largest number the chapter

host since 2004, the number was 68 students and 15 members from the

petroleum department instructors and technicians. The party was for free

and the SPE put a well organized plan for the trip starting from the trans-

portations from the university, food serving, computation time, SPE ses-

sion and finally the chairman speech.

als Student Chapter Stays Active with Fun Events king Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals

student chapter has been busy the past few months organizing

a handful of events. A BBQ welcoming party was held in late

October to introduce new students to SPE and the chapter.

With 68 students in attendance, it was a fun and successful

event …. (SPE Now) SPE KING FAHD UNIVERSITY OF PETRO-

LEUM & MINERAL Student Chapter hosts ac-tivities SPE KING FAHD UNIVERSITY OF PETRO-

LEUM & MINERAL Student Chapter has been busy. Their

first event for fall was Breakfast Day, attended by 76 SPE

members and faculty in the Petroleum Department Gar-

den. They also held Registration Days 11-13 October with a

huge turnout! …. (SPE Now)

On the 15th of November-

2009, The SPE-KFUPM Stu-

dents chapter organized, with

association with the PEC

(Petroleum Engineering Club),

an official trip to Schlumberger

Oil Service Company. The at-

tendees exceeded 60 students

divided into six groups with a

group leader in each. The one

thing that really deserves men-

tioning is the degree of organi-

zation from both parties.

In the base tour students were

shown and discussed the fol-

lowing topics: DNM (Drilling

Management), Packers &

Safety Valves, Absolute Intol-

erant in Quality Issues and Per-

foration Tools and Mecha-

nisms.
