Principal’s Message - Alecia Kearney (Relieving Principal)

The start to the term has been busy with new enrolments, some

new courses, new staff, a Swimming Carnival and a CAPA

excursion to Sydney.

School Attendance

Regular attendance at school is essential if students are to

maximise their potential. Schools, in partnership with parents/

carers, are responsible for promoting the regular attendance of

students. While parents/carers are legally responsible for the

regular attendance of their children, school staff, as a part of their

duty of care, monitor part or whole day absences. If your child is

marked absent at roll call, without an explanation, an SMS will be

sent to the mobile number on the student’s record.

Parents/Carers are responsible for:

Enrolling their children of compulsory school age in a

government or registered non-government school or registering

them with the NESA (NSW Education Standards Authority).

Explaining the absences of their children from school promptly

and within seven days to the school.

Ensuring that their children attend school regularly.

Taking measures to resolve attendance issues involving their

children.

School Staff are responsible for:

Providing a caring teaching and learning environment which

fosters students’ sense of wellbeing and belonging to the school

community.

Recognising and rewarding excellent and improved student

attendance.

Maintaining accurate records of student attendance.

Implementing programs and practices to address attendance

issues when they arise.

Providing clear information to students and parents/carers

regarding attendance requirements and the consequences of

unsatisfactory attendance.

If your child is absent from school, for any reason, notification

must be received by the school within 7 days, otherwise the

absence will remain “unjustified”. This could affect any

Government payments you or your child receive.

Students Signing Out During the Day

Parents and carers are encouraged to follow school procedure

when students need to sign out of school during school hours.

Students are only permitted to leave school before the end of the

school day if they have a note signed by their parent/guardian.

This note must be presented at the Student Services Counter

before school begins at the start of the day. Parent/carers are also

reminded that if they are picking up their child during school hours

Bronze Medallion

During Term 4 2019 a group of students from Years 8 - 11 completed their

Bronze Medallion course.

The Royal Life Saving Bronze Medallion is recognised as the minimum

standard for a qualified lifesaver. This award also increases employment

opportunities with many pools and aquatic centres as they require

employees who conduct aquatic programs to have their Bronze Medallion.

The course enhances personal survival skills while providing the knowledge

and skills to develop the level of judgement, technique and physical ability

required to safely carry out water rescues.

The Bronze Medallion is designed to build awareness of dangers in aquatic

environments and to arm the Casino High School student community with

lifesaving skills used in both prevention and rescue. Students learn to throw

ropes and perform safe and appropriate rescues while prioritising their own

safety and others within the water. Students also undergo a series of

exercises that place them in likely accidents that occur around the water

and learn to survive, self-preserve, assess and take action in such

instances.

Swimming Carnival

Casino High School held their annual Swimming Carnival in Week 2. What a mixture of a day in terms of weather

with some warm but overcast conditions. Those in attendance had a great day and showed some tremendous house

spirit throughout the day. Special thanks to our House Captains and Vice Captains and all senior students who led

the way. The carnival not only consists of the competitive events but also many novelty events for all to participate in.

At the end of the day there is always a winner declared and this year the winning house was Irving for the second

year in a row on 1303 points. Congratulations to Irving House! Carrington was not far behind in second place on

1244 points, Tomki in third place on 673 points and Richmond dropping two places from last year to be in fourth

place on 570 points.

Age Champions

Congratulations to not only our age champions but to all students who attended on the day and showed tremendous

house spirit and got involved.

Records Broken

A big thank you to Ms Goode, Mrs Wall, and the PDHPE Faculty who once again organised such a great carnival.

Year 7 Water Survival Challenge

On the first day of school this year our Year 7 students participated in the Water Survival Challenge at the Casino

pool. This activity is used to determine the aquatic proficiency of students in order to participate in aquatic activities

throughout the year. It also serves as a good introduction for the Aquatics Unit Year 7 will be completing this term as

part of the PDHPE curriculum.

The students had a great afternoon at the pool and it was pleasing to see the students behaving and performing well in the challenge.

Financial support

Additional payment for children

The Australian Government has announced an Additional Payment for Children of $400. You'll automatically get this payment if you are the principal carer of a child affected by bushfires after 30 June 2019 and you are eligible for the Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment (AGDRP).

The payment is in addition to the existing $400 AGDRP (for a total payment of $800) for children and is not subject to income tax.

It is available to new applicants from 20 January 2020. Families of the nearly 20,000 children who have already applied for the AGDRP do not need to re-apply, the additional payment will follow automatically.

Ongoing mental health and wellbeing support

Schools and students can access a range of mental health and wellbeing services including counselling. Please talk to your school about the support available or the support you might need as the school year gets underway.

Australian Government support will complement existing school counselling services including state and territory responses to the bushfires. $76 million of Australian Government funding will provide distress counselling and mental health support for individuals, families and communities affected by bushfires. This includes additional funding to support young people through headspace centres in bushfire-affected areas.
