DATES TO REMEMBER Tuesday 25 April ANZAC DAY Dear Parents and Guardians, On Sunday 26th March, we saw our fabulous Rainbow Run take place. What a wonderful but windy day it was. We saw many families join us for a great walk around the park, including people from the wider community joining us to be splashed with colour. Our P & F are truly inspiring women who are dedicated and passionate. A special thanks to Chloe Fucile, Anne Scasserra and their band of willing helpers. It takes a great deal of organisation to make a day successful and they certainly made it a day to remember. It was awesome to see so many of our past students helping on the day. Well done everyone, it proved to be a wonderful day. Uniforms It is always interesting when you hear people say that uniforms are not that important and ‘does it really matter if they have the wrong shoes or haircut?’ My belief is that it is important. When you join our school you are aware at the interview and through the Handbook that uniforms and haircuts are an integral part of our school life. We have even placed pictures in the handbook so that parents are not confused on what to purchase for their child. Therefore, I am always surprised and disappointed when children arrive at school with the wrong socks/shoes, uniforms that are too short or inappropriate hairstyles. In life, we are asked to conform to uniforms or dress standards. Could you imagine being a life guard and deciding that you did not wish to wear the uniform that identifies who you are or if you were a police officer and you decided not to wear your assigned uniform in the city? How would people recognise you if they were in need? Our uniform identifies who we are and it give us a standard to follow. When you join the school I always mention uniforms and people seem happy to accept this as part of being in our school but after time, people seem to feel it is not a problem to change the standards. I would like to ask that parents reflect on the Uniform Policy as set out in the Handbook and ensure that your child is dressed correctly. If you are aware that long sweeping fringes are not correct, please ensure that your child has the correct cut for their days at school. Parent Interviews Over the last three weeks we have seen parent interviews take place throughout the school. This was a wonderful opportunity for parents to discover the progress of their child. Thank you to the teachers for making the time to meet with all parents and thank you to our fantastic parent body for attending. It is fabulous to see the progress our students have made over the term. A REMINDER THAT TERM 2 COMMENCES ON MONDAY 24 APRIL 2017. STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND ON THIS DAY.

DATES TO REMEMBER Tuesday 25 April ANZAC DAY

Dear Parents and Guardians, On Sunday 26th March, we saw our fabulous Rainbow Run take place. Uniforms

When you join our school you are aware at the interview and through the Handbook that uniforms and haircuts are an integral part of

our school life.

LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOUR

A victim of Typhoon Santi, Aloma was provided with the skills to

lead her vulnerable community in developing resilience to

extreme weather events.

All the skills that I learned, I pass on to friends and neighbours." Aloma

When Typhoon Santi destroyed her home in coastal Philippines, Aloma feared for her family’s safety and their future. Extreme weather events such as typhoons and cyclones are a common occurrence in this country, threatening the safety and food security of many families.

In the Philippines, GDP per capita is around one-tenth that of Australia’s, and life expectancy is around 14 years lower. Poverty is the single most important factor determining vulnerability to natural disasters, which makes communities like Aloma’s particularly vulnerable.

However, confidence began to replace fear for Aloma as she began participating in the Integrated Community Development Program (ICDP) in 2011. The program, run by the Socio Pastoral Action Centre Foundation Inc., is supported by Caritas Australia. It helps communities to prepare for disasters, and adopt environmentally friendly practices.

Aloma’s training in disaster risk reduction empowered her to take a leadership role in her community in caring for the environment. She manages logistics during natural disasters, and encourages the families in her village to plant mangroves for land conservation.

The program also offers guidance on working together for the common good. As a result, Aloma says, “All the skills that I learned, I pass on to friends and neighbours.”

Aloma’s community now cares for their common home together, and Aloma sees a brighter future for her children.

My dream for my community is to continue what we are doing right now, so that the next generation will benefit from what we have started." - Aloma
