Gisborne Secondary College values respect, diversity, innovation and achievement. Through a wide range of learning opportunities, students develop fulfilling and independent lives.
Congratulations Cindy Wilson
Congratulations to Cindy Wilson for achieving Student
of the Year 2017 Award at Headmasters Academy.
Cindy is our VCAL student who completed her
Certificate 111 in Beauty Studies this year. Cindy is an
exemplary student at Gisborne Secondary College and
conducted herself on the same manner during her
studies at Headmasters Academy. Her determination
and hard-work paid off in such a recognition at the
end of her two-year program.
To complete her studies Cindy had to attend the
Headmasters Academy every Wednesday for 2 years.
This meant that she was missing classes and catching
up with these in her time. Cindy kept in regular con-
tact with me and discussed her program and issues
quite frequently. She also spoke to Mr David Butler
who is her VCAL coordinator.
Cindy has been offered a job at Myer where she will
be joining her twin sister Evlyn who is the recipient of
the same award for 2016.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear families
The last few weeks have been slightly quieter as we head in to VCE Exam time. We farewelled our Year 12 students from formal classes last Monday and they
had a wonderful celebration at Bullengarook Reserve as we do each year.
Two big projects are now underway at the college.
The first involves changes to our student computer device program across the college for 2018. I have been emailing parents with details as they are settled
on, and the best place to keep-up-to-date on the decisions is at:
byod.gisbornesc.vic.edu.au.
The second project probably has less impact on families, but is still significant for staff and students, and is our 2017/2018 Planned Maintenance Program. This
project encompasses three major pieces of facilities work (as well as a few lit-tle odds and sods)
1.Re-roofing the Performing Arts Centre
2.Resurfacing and irrigating the College Oval
Installing flexible walls to the two Learning Centres – B and I Blocks
Contractors have begun a little of this work, and will be in full swing by next week. We hope that this work is completed by the end of the first term. There
will be some disruption to room use, and obviously the school oval will be out of action for many weeks.
Today teaching staff spent professional learning time on:
High Impact Teaching Strategies— http://www.education.vic.gov.au/Documents/school/teachers/support/highimpactteachstrat.pdf
1. 2018 Senior School Support Program
2. 2018 Planning and Preparation
I hope that you get to enjoy Melbourne Cup day with family. Take care of yourselves.

FROM THE STAFF
Teagan Bunn and Brendan Crozier of Year 12, along with another student entered a
competition run by Ballarat University. They had to write why they would like to win free tickets to see Brian Cox in 25 words or less. Teagan was declared the winner, given 3 free
tickets and Brendan runner up winning 2 free tickets. I have been invited to attend. How
lucky are we all? It’s great to have a go, and I continue to urge all students to do so.
Brian Cox is one of the world’s foremost communicator of all things scientific. His innate
ability to make highly complex matters entertaining and easy to contemplate has made his
scientific television shows ground breaking in their audience reach and accessibility.
Joining Brian on stage will be British comedian, actor and writer Robin Ince, Brian’s co-host
on the BBC Radio 4’s The Infinite Monkey Cage.
Professor Brian Cox OBE is a British particle physicist at the University of Manchester and
Royal Society Professor for Public Engagement in Science. He carried out research at the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, Switzerland and the HI experiment
at DESY in Hamburg.
SECOND HAND TEXT BOOKS
Students are encouraged to buy and sell second hand textbooks where possible. Students in
Years 8 & 9 need a Science Quest Text book(Vic Edition), whilst Year 10 Psychology
students need a ‘Get Psyched’ book. Our VCE students need:
Chemistry 1 or 2 by Jacaranda
Nature of Biology Book 1 or 2 by Jacaranda
Psychology 1&2, or 3&4 by Jacaranda
Heinemann Physics 11 or 12
There are additional costs for the e books and to reactive
Study ON for the Jacaranda texts.
Biozone workbooks for biology, need to be purchased new.
Good luck to all our students during their VCE exams.

Orienteering at the National Champs
– Sophie Taverna
During the September school holidays I had the opportunity to represent Victoria at the National Schools Orienteering Championships in Bathurst. I competed in 7 events over 10 days against other school kids from all over Australia and New Zealand.
There were individual sprint events around University campuses and long and middle distance runs in surrounding forests, two of these were relays.
I enjoyed the sprints the best even though it was easy to mispunch and I even managed to loose both my shoes during one of the sprint finishes!
My funniest memories were the challenge to fit as many team members in a phone box (16 was our record), doing a speed lap in the mini bus around Mt Panorama (20 km top speed) and almost standing on an echidna at Hill End. All the teams stayed in a boarding school that looked like Hogwarts and I got to meet lots of new people and make new friends.
This link shows some of the reasons why
I love the sport:

My hope is that we can have an
orienteering team represent GSC at the
Vic schools champs in May next year.
For more information about
orienteering please don’t hesitate to
have a chat with me or visit: http://www.vicorienteering.asn.au/

The Macedon Ranges Summer Series

FROM THE STUDENTS
Barista training
Pleasingly, all of our year 11 VCAL students
made their way by public transport and
successfully participated in Barista training
at South Melb’ this week.
James Morrissey showed much potential
making all types of coffees with ease,
despite apparently not using the machine
before, and reading the Barista guide just
minutes before we started.
Emma W, Aleshia B and Will Biffin also
joined the group with Will stating he was
very happy to be back with his friends.
Tyhe Mac’ was very good, helping guide, by
phone for Liam James to rejoin the group, at the correct location, after his sleep in. Liam
was wide awake by lunchtime though and
quite active after numerous lattes and mo-
chas, as were the rest of the group.
All students demonstrated practical hands on skills and worked well together.
Almost all, also managed to recharge their
Myki’s for the return trip.
Thankyou Heather Livermore for your much
appreciated assistance with the group.
Regards David Butler
