Messages from the Headteacher
Dear Parents/Carers
UCAS Applications - Tuesday was the final day for Year 13 students to submit applications for university places in
September. Once again students will be moving on to many varied courses around the country on the final stages of
preparation for their future career choices. This year we have students who have applied to study Civil Engineering,
Maths, English, Medicine, Physics, Law, Photography, Musical Theatre, Politics and International Relations. A particular
well done to Agnieszka Niewiadomska and Ryley Bucknall who have both been offered places at Cambridge University
in September. Agnieszka has chosen to study Computer Science and Ryley will be studying Anglo Saxon, Norse and
Celtic. Well done to all students.
Tamworth Road Gate - We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the closure of the Tamworth Road gate
over the past week. Work is currently being completed to enhance the security of our site and we will be reviewing
the opening and closing times of all our gates to continue to ensure that our site is as safe as possible. We will inform
parents once these improvements and timings have been finalised. Access to and from the school via the Tamworth
Road will be available as normal on Monday.
Year 10 Parents’ Evening - We look forward to seeing all Year 10 parents and students at parents’ evening on
Thursday 31 January, 4.30-7.15pm. Subject staff and the tutor team will be on hand to discuss targets and the progress
being make on your son/daughter’s individual courses. Parents can book appointments using our online booking
system. It is really important that parents and students are on time and keep to their 5 minute appointment time. If
parents have any problems booking an appointment, please phone or email the school for support.
Year 11 Parents’ Evening - Many thanks to all the parents and students who attended Year 11 Parents’ Evening last
night. Lots of information was given to parents and students about the progress of our students in the run up to their
GCSE exams in the summer. There are lots of interventions and after school sessions offered to Year 11 in order to
help them prepare for the summer exams and it is essential that students act upon the advice and support offered.
Year 8 Options Evening Advance Notice - Year 8 Options Evening takes place on Thursday 14 February at
6.00pm. The expectation is that everyone should attend as this is a vital time for your son/daughter as they make
crucial decisions about their future. The evening will provide information needed to help support students in making
informed decisions about which courses and pathways to follow. We look forward to seeing you all on the night.
Adverse Weather Procedures - Now the wintry weather is upon us, I would like to remind parents and students
of the procedure should extreme weather conditions force the school to close. Parents will receive notification by
text message and also a notice will be posted on the school website. Please do not block the school switchboard with
calls to enquire if school is open.
Parents are asked to ensure that during the cold weather their son/daughter has a warm jacket or coat to wear to
school that is plain black or navy blue and sensible footwear.
I hope you have a good week. Marina Kelly, Headteacher

Dear God, each day we are involved in the world around us in all sorts of ways. Help us
to bring peace, joy, love and harmony in a world where we can become truly ourselves,
not at the expense of others, but by becoming the unique people you created each one of
us to be. Help us to respect and to be respected, whoever we are, working with courage
towards a better world. Amen

Holocaust Memorial Day
2019 - Torn From Home
The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust
(HMDT) is the charity that promotes and
supports Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD). 27 January is the day for
everyone to remember the six million Jews murdered in the
Holocaust, and the millions of people killed in Nazi Persecution and
in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and
Darfur. 27 January marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the
largest Nazi death camp.
On HMD we can honour the survivors of these regimes of hatred
and challenge ourselves to use the lessons of their experience to
inform our lives today. HMD is a time when we seek to learn the
lessons of the past and to recognise that genocide does not just take
place on its own, it’s a steady process which can begin if
discrimination, racism and hatred are not checked and prevented.
We’re fortunate here in the UK; we are not at risk of genocide.
However, discrimination has not ended, nor has the use of the
language of hatred or exclusion. There is still much to do to create a
safer future and HMD is an opportunity to start this process.
The aims of HMD are laid out in our statement of
commitment. HMD activity organisers bring together the diverse
strands of their communities to commemorate Holocaust Memorial
Day in their neighbourhoods. This is a real demonstration of how the
lessons of the past can inform our lives today and ensure that
everyone works together to create a safer, better future.
This year's theme is Torn from Home and encourages audiences to
reflect on how the enforced loss of a safe place to call ‘home’ is part
of the trauma faced by anyone experiencing persecution and
genocide. ‘Home’ usually means a place of safety, comfort and
security. On HMD 2019 we will reflect on what happens when
individuals, families and communities are driven out of, or wrenched
from their homes, because of persecution or the threat of genocide,
alongside the continuing difficulties survivors face as they try to find
and build new homes when the genocide is over.
HMD 2019 will include marking the 25th anniversary of the Genocide
in Rwanda, which began in April 1994 and the 40th anniversary of the
end of the Genocide in Cambodia, which ended in 1979. HMD
activity organisers may particularly want to acknowledge this
milestone anniversary, and reflect on how this theme impacts on
members of the Rwandan and Cambodian communities.
