creating citizens for the future: compassionate, curious and strong.
Respect Responsibility Kindness Growth
Dear Parents and Carers,
It seems like only yesterday that we started the 2019 school year and here we are now in our final week of
term three. We will soon be in the early stages of organising classes for 2020. If you are leaving the area and
your child will not be attending Tarneit Rise Primary School next year, please let the office know so we can
plan using accurate student numbers. If you have a prep child starting next year, these enrolments should
have already been finalised but if not please get these in as soon as possible. Will we start planning our grade
structures and staffing early next term based on our projected numbers and after this we will be placing
students into grades and then assigning teachers to classes. When we place students in classes we are looking
to create the best learning environment for all students. Our decisions focus heavily on educational outcomes
and overall group dynamics. Our criteria for placing students are:
· Educational needs/outcomes
· Behavioural needs/outcomes
· Overall group dynamics – creating a positive and supportive group
· Friendship needs – if relevant in supporting student learning
If you have any information about your child’s educational needs that you have not already discussed with their
class teacher please let me know in writing no later than Friday October 11h.
Attendance – EVERY day Counts
How many days has your child been absent from school?
0 – 6 days: This is within the normal range. A child with this attendance rate is able to take full advantage of the teaching and learning opportunities and can easily catch up to his peers. 7-10 days: This attendance rate is below average. A child with this attendance rate could miss over ONE YEAR of learning if he/she continued at this rate from Prep through to Year 10. 11-20 days: This is a poor attendance rate. A child with this attendance rate could miss out on up to TWO YEARS of learning if he/she continued at this rate from Prep through to Year 10. 20+ days: This is very poor attendance. A child with this attendance rate could miss over TWO AND HALF YEARS of learning between Prep to Year 10. Please note: There is a strong link between school attendance and achievement later in life. Poor patterns of attendance in prep and grade 1 lead to poor patterns of attendance throughout all the school years. Poor attendance makes it difficult for children to form positive and strong friendships with their peers. Regular school attendance is paramount to future success. Please make sure your child is at school and if they
say they do not want to come, consult your child’s teacher to establish the reason/s why. Whatever the issue
preventing them from coming can and will be resolved. If your child is sick, please notify the office before
school. We will be contacting families each morning to clarify absences.

Students in grades three and five have been given their NAPLAN assessment this week. While these children have not been at Tarneit Rise for very long we do see this as a real celebration of learning. While this is an assessment tool that is used at Tarneit Rise, and all school across Australia, it is just one form of assessment. It measures reading, writing and numeracy. It does not measure so many other skills that, as a school and as a society we greatly value such as kindness, respect, responsibility or character. These are such important values that contribute to the school’s mission of creating citizens for the future: compassionate, curious and strong.
Extra-Curricular
The grade one children attended their excursion to the Melbourne Museum last week. Thank you to our wonderful parent volunteers who assisted on the day. The children had lots of fun and the excursion helped the children consolidate their learning about geography and indigenous culture.
The children have showcased their learning in performing arts this week, with little mini performances. These performances have provided children a chance to showcase their learning and provide the audience with such great entertainment.
The grade 2 children are having their sleep over tonight and are so excited to experience their first camping experience at Tarneit Rise Primary.
Choir continues every Monday after school.
Chess club will continue next term after school on Thursday.
Grounds and Facilities
Over the holidays work will continue on the soccer pitch and netball court construction. Work is progressing well. Every day we can see this space looking more and more like a soccer pitch and we just cannot wait to have these works completed towards the end of next term.
Landscaping will be completed around the classrooms
This week we farewell our much loved French teacher Madame Mick. Madame Mick joined the Tarneit Rise
community this year, from Canada. She has been such a valued member of the school, and we are sad her
working visa was for such a short time. We are sure Madame Mick will continue to pop in from time to time
to say hello over term four. Next term we welcome Chafia Boudaoud who will be teaching French
PLEASE REMEMBER SCHOOL FINISHES 2:30pm TOMORROW

Hi Families and Friends,
Once again another term has come and gone. We are so proud of the effort our children have put in this
term and we are extremely happy with the growth the prep cohort is demonstrating!
Following on from what has been a positive term, we thought we would put forward a few suggestions of
activities that can be completed on the holidays, to support the learning that has taken place in the
classroom. Please see below:
Reading
- Continue to READ EVERYDAY! It has been exciting to see students approaching 200 nights of reading.
Please log the books you read in the yellow reading log, so that the teacher can keep track and we
can celebrate the success.
- Please continue to log the books read down for the Premiers Reading Challenge. We are very
passionate about having ALL students log 30+ books to complete the challenge. 20 books must be
from the list.
- The heart words that have been covered so far are:
the my to was
of said are one
they into do you
your here saw what
where there their once
Please encourage your child to continue to spell these (t-h-e spells ‘the’) and be on the hunt for these words
in your daily reading. We also recommend cutting these words out and sticking them on the fridge so that
students are exposed to them on a daily basis.
Writing
- Please encourage students to practise their letters in their homework books. We have now learned
all 26 letters and their most common sound. Students are encouraged to trace over each letter with
their finger, while saying the sound it makes. It would be great for students to then practise writing
each letter while saying the sound, in their homework books. We have a big focus on correct letter
formation, so please ensure students pay close attention to the start and end
point of each letter.

- This term we have also learnt the following blends and diagraphs (th, sh, ch, wh, nk, ng)
- We also recommend that you encourage your child to write for enjoyment over the break. They can
write about different events or special outings to create a recount or write facts and information to
create information reports.
Maths
We have covered several concepts this term in Maths. It wold be great if you could go over the following
with your child:
- Addition and subtraction (numbers to 20) using stories and objects to
show mathematical thinking
- Measuring length using informal units (e.g. how many paper clips long
is the shoe etc.)
- Measuring mass by hefting
different objects. This allows
students to feel the difference in
the mass of objects as they are
holding them.
-
Personal development
- Thank you for your support with encouraging students to come in each morning and independently
unpack their bags. This will continue next term, as we are preparing our children to be independent
grade ones. Next Term we also start swimming, please allow your students time over the holidays to
practise dressing themselves at home as they will need to dress themselves at the pool in an efficient
and timely manner (this includes putting their own shoes and socks on). Please make sure you have
given consent on compass before the end of school tomorrow.
Thank you everyone for your support in what has been a very successful term! We hope you all have a
restful break and look forward to seeing everyone back on Monday the 7th October.
The Prep team.

Wow, what another fantastic term we have had in PLC1! All of the teachers are so proud of the hard work
and growth the students have shown throughout the term.
On Thursday and Friday of last week, all of the grade 1 students attended their excursion to the Melbourne
Museum. Students had the opportunity to look at and explore lots of exciting exhibitions. The students
explored the Bugs Alive exhibition that showed many different kinds on insects and spiders and they had the
opportunity to walk among the skeletons of prehistoric dinosaurs. Students participated in a learning
experience all about Aboriginal culture. They participated in a traditional ‘Welcome to Country’ ceremony
and learnt about how the lives of Aboriginal Australians differ from other Australians. This directly relates to
the learning the students have done in History throughout the term.
Well done to all of the grade 1 students who participated in the dance performances on Wednesday. I t was
amazing to see all of the hard work that students have being doing in Performing Arts, and it was a real treat
for the end of term. You should all be very proud of yourselves for having a growth mindset and have the
courage to perform in front of a large audience.
We wish all of our grade 1 students a restful break over the holidays. We hope you enjoy the forthcoming
sunshine, and are ready to come back to term 4 well rested and ready for a final term on learning in grade 1.
There will not be a letter of suggested activities going home these holidays. You are able to refer to the
calendar that was sent home for the month of September, and remember to read every night.
Happy Holidays!
Grade one team.

After a very busy term 3, we are sure that all of the children are looking forward to a well-earned break and
a rest!
In the last two weeks we have had such a busy time, finishing our learning for this term, but also getting
ready for term 4!
We have completed work with writing narratives, being able to make sure that we can write engaging,
interesting and well-structured pieces that we are all proud of!
In maths we have been looking at length and area, two important areas that are a lot of fun to learn
about. We have been measuring things all around our classrooms and around the school!
We have been comparing narrative texts in reading, and we are able to discuss our opinions of texts and
offer evidence to back up our opinions.
Our health unit has been looking at how we can be safe at school and at home as well as what warning signs
mean. This is after we looked at how we can make healthy lifestyle choices and what that can mean for us
now and later in life.
Of course we cannot forget our recent swimming program! It was great to see our students grow from our
intensive lessons. They can’t wait for summer to put their new skills to good use!
Lastly, we have the Year 2 sleepover at school Thursday this week. It will be a fun filled evening with
activities, games and good times with friends to be had! They will be really tired after the disco on Friday
and ready for a break! What a way to finish a busy term!
Make sure we keep reading during the holidays, we cannot forget the fun and relaxation that reading brings
us, and we want to improve all the time!
We hope that you all have a safe and happy holiday!

Where has the term gone! We can’t believe that we have reached the end already. This week is the final
week of swimming! Swimming has become a compulsory part of the curriculum as it teaches students the
vital life skills needed in water safety. We look forward to the new swimming school opening up next year
just off Leakes Road next to Davis rd.
During the end of Term 3 we are now finalising units within reading, writing and mathematics. This week
students are finishing their biographies and getting ready to publish them. Students have been revising and
continuing to synthesise during their reading justifying how their thinking has changed or evolved
throughout their reading. We are currently working through our fractions unit which will come to an end at
the end of the week.
Term 4 will be an exciting term students will have completed their pre-tests for information reports and
teachers have been busy planning on how to teach and support students for our new unit to begin. Students
will be focusing on making inferences during their reading, being able to think about what the author is
trying to say looking at what the authors’ message is. We will be beginning a massive unit on Measurement.
Students will be learning to measure length, area, volume, capacity and mass using formal and informal
units of measurement.
During term 4 as part of our History unit students in grade 3 / 4 will be visiting one on Werribee’s most well-
known historical landmarks and participating in a day program at the Werribee Mansion. Details will be
available on compass for this event shortly.
We would love to thank our families for all the support and encouragement they have provided their
children. Thank you for continuously encouraging students to complete their reading each night! All
students have a Matheletics code, it is highly recommended that students compete the Matheletics
activities as they directly link to what students are focusing on within the classroom and they are curriculum
aligned.
We wish you a happy and safe holidays!

Student absence If your child is absent an explanation must be provided to the school. There are a few options for providing this information;
Call the school on 7002 6580 and press option 2 to leave a message. Clearly state your child’s name, class and reason for absence.
Email: [email protected]
Late arrivals School starts at 8:45 am and at Tarneit Rise we believe Every Minute Counts. If your child arrives at school after 8:45 they must receive a late pass from the office. This will ensure their attendance is correctly entered.
Hot Lunches Please ensure your child always has their lunch and snacks provided in their bags before school. We cannot accept hot food or take-away meals at the office. If you would like your child to have hot food then please use a thermal container so it can stay warm until lunchtime. Please ensure you are packing spoons and forks if required for your child’s food.
Sickbay We highly recommend that all children have a spare pair for clothing kept in their bags in case of toileting accidents at school. We suggest packing a pair of black tracksuit pants, socks and underwear. We would like to remind families that the Department of Education and Training does not provide personal accident insurance or ambulance cover for students. We highly recommend that families have their own Ambulance coverage/insurance, and please ensure that we have up to date details at the front office in case of an emergency.
Change of contact details If your contact details have changed please come to the office to fill out a form as it is important that we have the correct contact details on file in case of an emergency.
Lost Property Near the entrance of each learning pod you will find a large grey laundry basket for lost property. Please ensure your child’s items are clearly marked with their name so that they can be easily returned. Please check that your children are coming home with the correct items. If they bring home an item with
someone else’s name, please return it to the office.
Book Bags
Book Bags are now available at Rushford’s in Werribee. We have a limited number available at the office.
Uniform
Please ensure all names are put on your child’s uniform

We are proud of every student who set themselves a personal reading target as part of
the Premiers’ Reading Challenge and thank teachers and families for their support.

Dear Parents/Caregivers,
It has been an exceptional term here in the PE department at Tarneit Rise. We had our first ever District Carnival 3 of our relay teams made it through to Divisional level and we had 5 students make it through in Individual events. To gain a further understanding of how school competitions work here's a brief outline of the varying levels of competition. We currently have 700+ students at the School and we use House Sports Day to select the team for District. Then there is 8 Schools that compete in the Tarneit School Sport District.
We are part of the Wyndham Divisional Competition which is made up of 33 schools. After this there are 2
more rounds, Regional of which we are part of the Western Metropolitan Region and finally State.
