Mental Health week 14th - 20th May 2018

3

Using an idea launched recently by the Mental HealthFoundation, Ivy Cottage hosted this years Curry and Chaatevent.

This was an evening of food, music and above all anopportunity to get together and talk.

The aim of Curry & Chaat is simple: get together with friends, enjoy a delicious curry and raise moneyfor the Mental Health Foundation and a vision of a world with good mental health for all and for a lessstressed nation.

With this years theme being stress, the Ivy Cottage evening helped provide an opportunity to talkabout stress and how we take time for ourselves and each other.

Recipes for the evening were downloaded from the Mental Health Foundation Website and are stillavailable. Go to https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/get-involved/curry-and-chaat

For those of you who attended the evening I’msure you will agree that David Mitchell, RegisteredService Manager at Ivy Cottage made a greatwaiter for the evening.

Learning Disability week - 18th - 24th June

With this years theme being ‘Health’ Ivy Dene hosted a fantasticevent .

The event started with a Health Hunt activity walk, everyone had tofind pictures of human body parts around the cricket club field, runback to their team and position the parts in the correct location.I'm sure the pictures will help demonstrate this wasn’t as gruesomeas it sounds.

This was followed by a game of Rounder's and it was fantastic tosee everyone getting involved. We obviously have some talentedrounder's players.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part and to staff memberswho made this event a success.

As part of Safeguarding week Ivy Lodge alsohosted a mate / hate crime event.

This event was a great opportunity to meetthe newly appointed Mate / Hate crime liaisonfor South Yorkshire Police, Jayne Wynne.

Jayne Wynne and Mark Moxon from SouthYorkshire Police pictured right.

This event discussed the issue and helped raise awareness of:

● What Mate/Hate crime is.

● How to be able to identify a crime has been committed.

● Recognise why people don't report things.

● Know how, when and who to report an incident to.

Jayne was also a huge help in identifying some local training opportunities for our Safeguarding trainingstaff too.

Thank you to Jayne and Mark Moxon who attended the event and helped raise awareness of thisimportant issue.

My name is Thomas and I have recently landedmyself a very good opportunity. After having aninterview I have become part of the volunteerworking team at Pontefract Castle.

My job role includes weeding, emptying bins, showing visitors down the dungeons, maintainingfacilities, putting up gazebos and general tidying.

Since joining the team at Pontefract Castle I havemade some great friends and learnt a variety ofnew skills.

After getting more experience I hope the next stepis paid employment.

John Paul, known as JP has been looking around for ajob for a while and recently saw a sign in the churchwindow looking for volunteers in a local charity shop.

This was for 2 hours a week and would be a great startto get some experience.

JP asked for staff to support him with this and wevisited the shop and asked how he could apply.

After an initial chat, the lady in the shop asked JP forsome details and he was invited to give the job a trythe following Monday.

This was very exciting for JP and he was told what he was expected to do, includingkeeping the shop clean and tidy, serving customers and help with deliveries.

JP says ‘I love my job and look forward to going to work every Monday’.

Feedback has been great, JP is bright, cheerful and polite.

This has been great for JP’s confidence and he has also built a really good workingrelationship with his colleagues Pauline and Barry who run the charity organisation.

Well done JP, this is a great achievement.
