Tri-Wire Limited, in Normanton WestYorkshire, is a subsidiary of Nexans -manufacturers of bare and tinned copperwire to support a wide range of marketsectors, and Martin Spurr, the company’sEngineering Quantity Manager, whojoined Tri-Wire 21 years ago isresponsible for ensuring 10,000 tonnes ofcopper wire a year comes off theproduction lines without a hitch:-

Chem Resist’s Fluid Transfer division was called

in when it was decided to reinstate a tinning line

some five years after the decommissioning of

Nexans’ old line:- “A Nexans plant in Swedenhad taken out a Niehoff tinning plant and,

rather than see it scrapped, we put ourenvironmentally-friendly hats on and decidedto recommission it here” said Martin. But one

of the original pumps was missing.

Where to find a Schmitt pump to get the line

running? Up popped our website and, says

Martin, he was impressed with the response:-

“Being practically just down the motorway fromus, Chem Resist came in to have a look andadvise us. They went into some detail, talked usthrough the range performance we required andgot the line running within a few days.

The service was brilliant and we now knowwhere to find Chem Resist for future needs!” www.nexans.co.uk

Ferguson & Menzies, an independent Scottish companyestablished over a century ago is based in Glasgow, host city tothe two giants of Scottish football - Celtic and Rangers.

But the company also boasts a duo of famous giants - two 120m3

thermoplastic storage tanks, the largest to be built in Europe,

designed, constructed and fitted by Chem Resist, an acknowledged

leader in the design and construction of such vessels.

Extensive Ranges

Under the brand name Opus Lubricants, the company distributes pine

oils and terpenes to manufacturers of household and industrial

cleaning products - and an extensive range of synthetic and mineral

based lubricants and chemicals for many different industries both in

the UK and internationally…

Customer Service Paramount

Majority owner and Managing Director Nicky Proud, who joined

Ferguson & Menzies at the age of 16, bought the company some five

years ago together with Sales and Technical Director William McCann.

Since then, turnover has grown from around £1.1M to £6.7M and,

says Nicky, the growth has come as much from very high levels of

customer service as from the quality of its products:-

”We’ve now got five full time representatives and new customers arebeing added at a high rate of knots as our service levels continue tooutperform competition from the national lubricants manufacturers ...”

In addition Ferguson & Menzies makes and distributes Adblue - an additivewhich removes nitrogen oxide from exhaust systems of heavy duty vehicles, enabling them to meet stringent Euro 4 and 5 exhaust emission standards.

Saving Money

“It became obvious we would need bigger blending and storagefacilities” says Nicky, “Our enquiries led to Chem Resist developingthe larger 120m3 tanks we needed to cope with predicted demandand to buy in our core products in larger volumes and with fewerdelivery requirements - thereby saving money”.

“From day one, Chem Resist have been reliable, good to deal with, friendly and very professional in their approach…”

Chem Resist’s Managing Director Simon Hewitt commented that it hadbeen assumed that tanks of this size were a step too far: - “We thoughtotherwise, and with some additional investment in our productionprocess we cracked the problem.” Despite tight space constraints onsite the two leviathans - each 11 metres high and 4.5 metres in diameter- were delivered and safely installed by Chem Resist’s engineering teams.

Complimentary comments from happyChem Resist clients in a trade magazineprompted Feralco UK’s Technical OperationsDirector Neil Clarke and Project ManagerKevin Parkes to pick up the phone andinvestigate further:-

“It quickly became apparent Chem Resist wasa company we could do business with” saysNeil.“Not least because their attitude was not‘what can we sell you?’ but rather ‘what areyou trying to achieve?’ “A somewhat novelapproach in our experience...”

Following a meeting with Simon Hewitt, ChemResist’s Managing Director, confidence wasfurther reinforced by the fact that assistancein managing the project was provided by ChemResist alongside Feralco.

Largest aluminium sulphate provider

Feralco is a leading manufacturer of highperformance water treatment and process

chemicals - principally aluminium sulphateand polyaluminium chloride - for thetreatment of drinking water, process water, sewage and industrial effluents and theprocessing of paper.

The company is the largest supplier by volumeof aluminium sulphate to key water utilitieswhich include Thames Water, Scottish Waterand Yorkshire Water.

Historically Feralco have sourced tanks froma supplier which does not usually assist in thewider aspects of a project.

Technical expertise

The project objective was to significantlyincrease capacity and production at thecompany’s Widnes plant, which required thedesign and installation of two large bulkstorage tanks and two chemical mixing tankstogether with associated process pipe workand pumps. Neil says:-

“It’s obvious that Chem Resist have thetechnical expertise, but Simon and his teamalso have a ‘can do’ down to earth attitude andthat gave us the confidence to go with ChemResist. A decision, I have to say, that has beenfully justified”.

Were there any issues relating to GRP versus

Thermoplastic?

“None whatsoever” Kevin asserts, “that wasnever a consideration for us. The only questionwe ask is are the tanks suitable for ourrequirements, and they patently are. The wholeproject went very well with minimum disruptionand interference with ongoing production”.

Neil and Kevin say the Chem Resist team

“Were of immense help to us.

There’s no doubt if we’d known about ChemResist before they would have been suppliersto Feralco for many years now.”

Walk into any hotel, restaurant, bar or hospital washroom inthe UK and there’s a good chance the hand-wash lotion - andpossibly the dispensing system itself - will have beenprovided by Ecolab, a world leading company serving a widerange of markets and applications from hospitality andhealthcare to food service and textile care.

Ecolab’s UK operation has a group turnover of £100m and the

Food & Beverage division based at Cheadle near Manchester

accounts for some £21m of that figure.

Chem Resist have supplied two chemical storage tanks to the site

and Jeremy Bradley - Project Manager for engineering in this

division says Chem Resist is their “Partner of Choice”:-

“We first specified Chem Resist a couple of years ago for a largeDairy in Leeds where they supplied bulk storage tanks for caustics, acids and sanitising products. Since then we have called them in onseveral projects, notably in the dairy sector where Chem Resisthave provided a full turnkey solution to our requirements.”

“Our brief to them would mainly centre on which of our productswould be stored in the tanks together with any size limits orconstraints. At this point Chem Resist’s technical experienceand expertise kicks in to design the storage tanks and specify thematerials most suitable for the application. Design, build, installation and hand- over completes the process.”

“Chem Resist does much more than simply supply chemicalstorage tanks and their advice is always welcome in these areasof operation.”

Efficient and Reliable

The 31- year old (a staunch supporter of the “blue” persuasion in

Manchester football loyalties) spends much of his time with

Ecolab’s food & beverage customers ensuring their whole process

systems, from chemical tank to bottling or food lines, are

delivering optimum sanitation levels.

Many of the company’s customers are very well known household

names and Jeremy values the fact that Ecolab has a strong

management structure, a “can do” philosophy throughout the

organisation, and “takes good care of its people ‘on the ground’delivering exceptional customer service” he says.

The Chem Resist tanks at Cheadle are used for the storage of

hypochlorite and, when asked for a one word response to the

question “What’s the best thing about Chem Resist?” Jeremy, like

many before him, said we’d have to settle for two words:-

“Efficient and Reliable” he said - concluding “They’re anothergreat team that has my support!”
