One of the biggest concerns for individuals planning for retirement is—what will my take-

home pay be? Well, saving for retirement in a tax-deferred plan (like Super Service’s 401k

plan) has less impact on your take-home pay than you think. Your contributions to a 401k plan

reduce your taxable income and therefore, you may pay less in taxes, and actually keep more

of the money you earn! Take a look at the below example of someone who earns $30,000 a

year:

With a 401k Without a 401k

Weekly Pay Before Tax: $577 $577

4% Pre-Tax Contribution to 401k: $23 $0

Taxable Income: $554 $577

Take-home Pay After Taxes*: $399 $415

Total Pay Kept: $422 ($399+$23) $415

*Assumes 28% tax

Why You Need to Enroll

For some people, retirement may seem a lifetime away. But don’t be tempted to put off saving

because each year it becomes more and more difficult to make up for lost time. The key is to

start as early as possible.

Make the Commitment

If you have one year of employment with Super Service, you are eligible to enroll our 401k

plan. To enroll, contact Transamerica at 800-401-8726 or go online at www.ta-retirement.com.

Once you enroll, you will see your first contribution to the 401k come out of your paycheck

after the 1st of the following month.

How Do We Stack Up?

Submitted By: Jay Thomas, Director of Safety

A little over three and a half years ago, I accepted the challenge of

leading the Safety Department along with the responsibility of making

Super Service LLC, a safer and more compliant motor carrier. It has

been a very rewarding and, at times, challenging ride.

One of the questions I am often asked is “How did you get from there

to where we are now?” The answer is very simple. First, you must

build a company which has a culture of safety. A “culture of safety”

means everyone is safety conscious and held accountable for safety.

Every day, each of us should take the time to appreciate everything and everyone we have in our lives. We

each need to do whatever it takes to be safe so we can go home to the people who love us and the things we

have worked hard to achieve.

Regardless of your role in the supply chain, we should never put ourselves in harms way by taking short

cuts or bending the rules and regulations for the sake of a load.

To put this in perspective, I have provided the below chart to show how we stack up to other carriers like us:

You can see from the chart (on the previous page) we still have some areas where improve-

ment is required. On the lower portion of the chart (green), you will notice we are better

than our peers in other areas.

NOW FOR THE CLINCHER!

In February 2014, Super Service did not have any green. In almost all categories we were in

double digits with a high of 81.7%. On the low side we were 13% higher than our peers.

For all of you who have been here longer than 4 years, also remove the days when we had

no prepass and we visited every open scale.

Today, our CSA basics for Unsafe Driving, Hours of Service, Driver Fitness, Controlled

Substance, Vehicle Maintenance and Hazmat are all below the intervention threshold. As a

result, we have a 98% pass rate with our Prepass which saves time and money.

As you can see, together we all have made huge strides toward improvement.

DRIVERS AND DINERS

Submitted By: Fred Needham, VP of Sales/Marketing

Tony Celii, National Sales Executive, had the opportunity to have dinner with two

of our dedicated NFI / Target Cross Dock Drivers earlier in the month.

Jesse is our most senior dedicated driver in the Breinigsville, PA operation, and as

fate would have it, the timing of this event also corresponded with a couple of im-

portant anniversaries. Jesse is celebrating his third year anniversary with Super

Service and has been running for NFI for two years. He likes both the daily chal-

lenges with the various duties he is responsible for and being home on the week-

ends. Jesse has three boys, all of whom are grown, with one of them serving the

good people of Indianapolis as a police officer.

Brian is one of our newest dedicated drivers and has just taken his Hazmat certifi-

cation to help us with this segment of NFI's business (which picks up during peak

retail season). Brian is single and currently lives outside of the Scranton, PA area.

Trucking has always been in his blood, as his father works for FedEx Freight. Bri-

an is celebrating his first anniversary with Super Service this month and is enjoy-

ing the new opportunity.

Tony Celii

Left to right: Tommy Taylor and Joe Bennett

Tommy Taylor, Regional Sales Manager, took Joe Bennett out to lunch.

Joe was born and raised in Louisiana. At the age of eighteen, he went to Florida

and began his career working in construction. He did this for many years. During

this period, he met his wife, Cynthia. They have been married for over 26 years

and currently reside in Wildwood, FL. Joe has been with the Super Service for al-

most five years and is one of our great trainers. He loves what he is currently doing

and enjoys the people he works with. When Joe is at home, you will find him

working in his church, helping others in need and spreading the gospel.

SUPER SERVICE ASE CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

Submitted By: Vince Taylor, GA Service Manager

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) is a national group which certifies profes-

sionals and shops in the automotive repair and service industry. These certifications include Diesel Engines,

Drive Train, Brakes, Suspension and Steering, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Systems, Electri-

cal/Electronic systems, and Preventive Maintenance Inspection.

Super Service has a technician ASE certification program which allows technicians to be reimbursed annual-

ly for the cost of two ASE registration and testing fees per year. Technicians can earn an hourly pay increase

immediately with a passing score. There is also an additional hourly pay increase for documenting the ASE

certified skill at their annual review. Recognizing that not everyone excels at taking tests, the program also

provides opportunity for technicians to earn the skills pay increase after two failed attempts on the certifica-

tion test.

Super Service would like to recognize all of our ASE certified technicians over the next few newsletters.

The two technicians featured this month that earned ASE certifications are from our Ellenwood, GA shop.

Both are on their way to becoming ASE Master Technicians. The technicians from left to right are Maurice

Barnes and Travis Moss. They are displaying a Super Service ASE certified T-shirt. The t-shirt is being

awarded to all current ASE certified technicians.

Travis has earned multiple certifications since joining our maintenance team on August 29, 2016. He has

earned certifications for Preventive Maintenance Inspection, Diesel Engines, Brakes, Suspensions, Steering,

Electrical/Electronic Systems, and Drive Train. Travis is one certification away from becoming an ASE Mas-

ter Technician.

Maurice has also earned multiple certifications since joining the maintenance team March 30, 2016. His cer-

tifications are in Preventive Maintenance and Brakes. He is well on his way to becoming an ASE Master

Technician.

Again, we would like to congratulate these gentlemen for their achievements as well as their dedication to

Super Service. If you are in the Ellenwood terminal, please stop by the shop and congratulate them on their

accomplishments.

We look forward to recognizing our other ASE certified technicians in Grand Rapids and Somerset over the

next few months in our Maintenance Minute.
