The following was made clear at the information meeting: Meat Inspection Scheme The scheme serves as the policy and procedural manual for the assignment of service providers to provide meat inspection service. The scheme is compulsory and applies to all abattoirs in the Republic of South Africa. The scheme applies to all animals listed under schedule 1 of the Meat Safety Act, 2000. NEWSLETTER Chairman’s pen august 2017 Dear colleagues

We are well into the second half of the year and still firmly in the grip of winter. All around us we see, and experience, the economy slowing down. We all know people who have been laid off, salaries reduced and/or affected by short time. Times are tough indeed and we should be thankful for what we have.

Meat Inspection Scheme

The meat inspection scheme was published on 7 July 2017. We were informed by the Depart-ment of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries on 10 July 2017. An information session was held in Pretoria on Friday 21 July 2017. The application to be assigned by the Minister to deliver a meat inspection service under the scheme must be submitted to a Provincial Executive Of-ficer by Friday 4 August 2017. IMQAS will apply to render meat inspection services in all 9 provinces and 5 categories of abattoirs: red meat, poultry, ostrich, crocodile and game.

The following was made clear at the information meeting:

Meat Inspection Scheme

The scheme serves as the policy and procedural manual for the assignment of service providers to provide meat inspection service.

The scheme is compulsory and applies to all abattoirs in the Republic of South Africa. The scheme applies to all animals listed under schedule 1 of the Meat Safety Act, 2000.

The objectives of the scheme are:

To ensure that the provision of meat inspection service is independent at all abattoirs . To include other facilities, where deemed necessary by the National Executive Officer,

for example export, import approved cutting plants, processing plant and cold stores. To set procedure for the assignment of meat inspection personnel and service providers. To set standards for the operations of meat inspection assignees at abattoirs and other

facilities.

The scheme also states that an assignee rendering a meat inspection service reports to the PEO in the province in which they operate. Meat inspection personnel report to the assignee who is accountable for their performance. Abattoir management and supervisors do not have oversight and managerial roles over the assigned meat inspection personnel.

Best wishes for a Blessed month of August

IMQAS HEAD OFFICE

What is sexual harassment? Physical, verbal or non-verbal harassment is defined as any unwel-come conduct of a sexual nature, including physical contact, verbal suggestions or innuendo, inde-cent exposure or the display of explicit images. Should an employee use their position to elicit sex-ual favours in exchange for a promotion, raise or similar, this is also a form of sexual harassment.

What to do about it Sexual harassment in the workplace is never appropriate and must be dealt with swiftly and decisively. Keep in mind the steps to take should it ever occur to stand up for yourself as powerfully as possible. There are a number of steps you can take to stop inappro-priate behaviour from reoccurring, each one a further escalation of the matter.

Talk to the person harassing you. Ask them to stop, and tell them you will file a report if their behaviour continues.

Report it to your immediate supervisor. Should the situation persist, make a detailed note of the times and places that any incidents occurred, and if possible, discreetly enquire from col-leagues as to whether they have received the same treatment from the person in question.

Make a formal complaint. Take your complaint to your HR representative. They should be able to help you with the next steps to follow.

Escalate the situation to your company’s senior management. Should nothing come of the HR meetings, make sure to represent all documents and evidence to management to support your case.

You can file a charge at the South African Police, and consider hiring legal representation in order to file a lawsuit.
