Term 1 Week 2
NEWSLETTER
Dear whānau, Welcome back to our returning families and a warm welcome to our new students and families. Krissalee Tuau, Sharaley Porima, Layla and Dougie Van Tol are in Kotuku class and Thomas Porima is in Kereru class. It has been lovely to see all our tamariki settle quickly into routines. Our school roll is currently 31. Staff have been working hard in preparation for an exciting term and year of learning. There have been some changes to our staffing for 2020. Whaea Shelley will be at school on Monday and Fridays. Whaea Rachael will be in the office on a Wednesday and Friday. Matua James will alternate weeks in Kotuku class. One week he will be teaching Thursday and Friday, the next week he will be teaching Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Lucy Brandon is back this term to teach swimming 3 afternoons a week. Releasing Whaea Huti for her classroom release days is Briar Gilbert. Briar will also help out with relieving. David Coyle is joining our staff on Thursdays. He will be organising our IT issues, including setting up our new library system and office duties. Will Helu from Thrive will be mentoring our Year 7&8 students fortnightly on a Tuesday. During the holidays all classroom carpets were professionally cleaned. John Pouwhare, our caretaker and cleaning staff, Ollie Conrad and Treena Green, worked on the classrooms and grounds to ensure everything was clean and ready for the new school year. It is lovely to work in a school environment that is organised and clean. Our staff have achieved this to a high level. I thank them for their hard work. Thank you to everyone for getting their children back to school organised with their stationary. This assists staff to get straight into teaching and learning. Also staff appreciate the support that we have received in making sure all children have a wide brimmed hat at school. It is Hauturu School policy that wide brimmed hats are worn in Term one and four. This is part of our sunsmart policy. Each class also has sunscreen available, so students can apply during the day. We are swimming every day, which is our Physical Education focus for term one. All students are expected to have their swimwear with them daily. If for health reasons, your child is unable to swim please contact the class teacher. A note or phone call is really appreciated. The senior swimming sports (Year 4-8) is on the 6th March in Te Awamutu. We will be competing against the other Kawhia Coast schools. There will be more information to come. Our learning concept for 2020 is celebration. In Term one this will have a social science. technology focus. Students will be developing understanding about iconic people in Aotearoa/New Zealand, developing plans and creating products. Teaching staff have begun professional development in mathematics. We are working with a facilitator from the University of Waikato to support us with our learning.
PRINCIPAL’S COMMENTS
During the holidays, I spent time analysing achievement data for 2019. I am very excited by the shifts in achievement our students have made. In the next newsletter I will share the analysis with you. We continue to develop our resources to support our students learning. We are purchasing lego that can be coded, upgrading digital devices and creating kits of mathematics resources. If you have any questions or want to discuss anything with us please come and see us or ring. We encourage involvement of families in their child’s learning. I have an open door policy and look forward to seeing you. Remember if your child is absent from school please ring and let us know. We are working through a process of selecting the Head Student for 2020. Year 8 students have been invited to stand for this important role. If we have more than one student who would like to be considered a panel will interview the candidates and announce the successful student. Once the students have been informed we will inform the community who the Hauturu School Head Student is for 2020. Finally, remember we welcome whānau to our school hui. Hui are held every fortnight and the first one for 2020 is this Friday at 2pm. At school hui we celebrate learning and our values, sing waiata and share notices. We look forward to seeing you there. Ngā mihi, Sue Coyle Principal.

School Time Table
We have settled into our class for 2020 quickly, and our learning focus for week one was relationships which is one of our values. Learning new things about each other with our “All About Me” soccer ball.
KERERU CLASS
We have settled into class routines quickly. We have enjoyed finding interesting things about each other as we focus on relationships. Our focus for responsibility has been getting our digital badge, so we can use laptops. It is important that we care for our devices and we are safe online. In Kotuku class there have been a variety of activities happening in the classroom and playground. We hope you enjoy the photos of what we have been doing during the day.

We have found making noodles from a packet has caused our students to loose a considerable amount of their lunch time.
We believe it is important for our children to be active at lunch time, therefore the decision has been made that we will only accept noodles from a cup, or premade in a thermos.
