School Assemblies Weekly assemblies take place on Monday mornings from 7:50 to about 8:20. Every class in the school has an opportunity to present an assembly to the rest of the school. Parents are welcome to attend. Sports Day Our annual Sports Day takes place on Saturday 8 February. Please join us for a fun filled morning track and field events. The day starts at 8:30 and ends at approximately 13:30. The pupils need to be at school at 8:00. Open Day This year we will have an Open Day for parents interested in enrolling their children at our school. This will take place on Wednesday 5 February at 18:00 in the school hall.

The afternoon was filled with many fun activities and an enjoyable day was had by those who attended. Thank you too to Wilfred Schrieff for planning so many activities that was enjoyed by all. School Fees For the benefit of new parents to our school, we have a special deal for parents every year. If the annual school fee is paid in full before the end of January, the fee is discounted by 3%. So, if you wish to save yourself some money, pay in full by Friday 31 January. Every day we hear of schools struggling financially! Please keep on paying your school fees and don’t let the media tell you otherwise – the view outside is that you don’t need to pay – that schooling should be free… Please don’t be misled – if you don’t pay, the school will suffer and directly that means that your children will have to do without the things you have come to expect from our school. Very few people know that if they do apply to the governing body for assistance, the state does not pay the shortfall. Our school is only given R254 a year per child towards operational costs and only 10 teachers’ salaries, 1 principal’s salary, 1 secretary, 1 caretaker and 2 cleaner’s salaries are paid. That’s it! All the rest is provided for in school fees by yourselves. So, if you are struggling to pay – we understand, but think very seriously before applying for partial fee relief.

Read aloud Day GSPS have pledged to help Nal’ibali break their read-aloud record by reading this year’s special story, which can be downloaded from Nal’ibali website www.nalibali.org This year’s target is to read aloud to more than 2 million children and our students and staff will be dedicating time between 09:30 and 10:00 to read on the 5th of February 2020. Photographs At school we have a procedure of posting photographs of pupils and posting them on our social media platforms with the permission of the parents. A request to parents to please obtain permission from other parents of children they photograph in group settings and post on social media.

ATHLETICS PRACTICE: (Starts 07:20 – Tues, Wed, Thurs) – Grade 4-7 ATHLETICS PRACTICE: (Starts 07:20 – Tues, Wed, Thurs) On Saturday 8 February we will be having our sports day. This is a fun day that all family members can come out and enjoy. NB: Athletics practice will be early morning for all pupils from 07:20 till school starts, every Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday. We want to ensure that we start this early as the heat is a factor having it later in the day. Please ensure that your child brings a water bottle to stay hydrated. Please note that all pupils must come to school in their full GSPS PT kit. SPORT UNIFORM: Reminder that the new sport uniform for all pupils will be compulsory this year. We have GSPS branded supporter jackets for parents and families that would like to purchase at R520, please contact Ms Isaacs or Mr Davids if you want to place an order. SPORT - GENERAL: If your son or daughter has achieved any Zonal, WP, SA sport colours please do inform Mr Davids as we at Groote Schuur Primary would like to acknowledge this awards. Please ensure that your son/ daughter takes part in a summer and winter extramural activity. A huge concern from the school is that pupils are telling parents they are attending sport practices and do not attend. This is a huge safety risk, as parents are under the assumption that their child is at sport but they are bunking practice, this is a clear violation of the school rules and an immediate Detention. Please ensure that your child is at practice when they should be. If your child cannot make a practice, please write or email Mr Davids to excuse your child.
