Mary Tabar – The Light and Dark of Design During our October General Meeting, we welcome Mary Wood Tabar who was born in Hannibal, Missouri where her mother was employed and trained by Singer Sewing Machine Company. Since the age of four she has been working with sewing machines. By six years of age she was doing crewel embroidery and other hand sewing projects. Raised with Midwest working ethics and family values, these qualities helped to foster appreciation, patience and a simple approach to life. She graduated from Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology, and a minor in Graphic Arts, and later received her Teaching Credential from California State University at San Marcos. She has had a variety of sewing experiences from making Madam Alexandra antique doll clothes in New York City to making Renaissance costumes in San Diego for people such as Mick Fleetwood. She lives in San Diego with her husband and two daughters. Her presentation, “Notan, the Light and Dark of Design” combines a short PowerPoint presentation, with a trunk show detailing what a Notan design represents. In her Saturday workshop, Quilters will gain the confidence to try a new technique of machine appliqué́ and learn new design ideas. Congratulations to everyone in the Guild for an incredible show! The planning, hard work and dedication of the show chairs, committee and all of our volunteers created an outstanding event. The visual impact of the Loving Hands display, opening into a panoramic vista of all your quilts hung in an impressive and beautiful art gallery, made this a show to remember.

The joy, excitement and surprise of ribbon winners and the many opportunity basket winners, created fun for everyone and good will toward the Guild. Several people so enjoyed the show that they enquired about membership. We have to make an accurate financial reckoning of all our costs, so make sure you submit your receipts as soon as possible. The income expense form for reimbursement is on our website under the Membership drop down menu. The most significant financial support for this show came from our vendors. Be sure to thank them any time you make a visit to their shops. We had four sewing machines donated, by Barons, Sewing Machine Warehouse and Pollards, for our Viewers Choice, Shopper’s Rewards and Opportunity Baskets. All other vendors gave much appreciated donations. The next two largest financial contributions came from the entrance tickets and the Boutique. Everyone loved the organization, fabulous setup and most of all, amazing deals! Kudos! We will be having a wrap-up meeting on this show. So while it is still fresh in your mind, this is the time to write down your observations, ideas and experiences, to bring for discussion. Pat yourself on the back as your hard work put on a show which will be remembered for a long time! Happy Quilting Colleen Shier

B

What an outstanding show!!! Thanks to the hard work of our Show Committee and the support of our fantastic guild members, this show was undeniably awesome and perhaps, as some attendees told us, the best show ever! From the exhibits to the quilt show; the Boutique to the vendors and classes, this show rocked! We’re still receiving compliments via mail and email. Many people stopped by the Information Desk to say how wonderful it was and how much there was to see with all the exhibits. Each of the bus groups were thrilled and one even called us the “best regional quilt show in CA!” Plus, everyone loved our new venue. Having the whole show in one building was a huge plus and offering food kept attendees in the building at lunch time. We have to say that the Conference Center venue is the best we’ve ever had and hopefully, it will be our home for shows in the future. We’re currently compiling the final bills and expect to have detailed figures for you soon, but the preliminary numbers are looking good. In the meantime, how about a few memories from the show? Enjoy the photos! Your Show Chairs ~ Sandy, Beth & Tina Below is Sherryl Zureck with her Best of Show Quilt: Baltimore Sea

Treasurer/Shier: The Treasurer’s Report for August was presented. Audit committee is being set up. Annual tax information will go to the CPA this month. December’s rent to FFC was paid. Sunshine & Shadows/Shier: Barbara Stewart lost her father. Larita Bennet donated fabric to our guild. Programs/Shier: Speaker is ready to go for the General Meeting. No raffle basket at the meeting, but books may be for sale. Workshops/Edwards: No workshop for September. October’s Snip and Flip with Mary Tabar has 11 people enrolled and November’s Copy Cup with Sandra Bruce has 10 people enrolled. Membership/Millman: We have 160 members with 20 not renewed at this time. Two out of six Affiliates have paid. A letter was presented to the Board for perusal and editing that will go out to vendors at our show and to former Affiliates thanking them for their service/participation in our event and asking them to join us as Affiliates for the upcoming year. It was decided to add the letter to vendor packets at our quilt show. Guest pass as a bookmark was presented as an idea to elicit new membership. This pass would go to quilt stores. The idea is shelved for after the show. To encourage people to wear their badges at the General Meeting, extra tickets will be given to all who have them and a prize will be awarded. Articles will be written about our new 2017 members for the newsletter. Discussion arose over recognizing names of donors who gave towards the door prizes given at the General Meeting. Outside donors will be noted in the newsletter. Newsletter/Miyahara: October’s newsletter articles are due Tuesday, September 26th due to the show. It is recommended that pictures be sent separately and not embedded in articles for easier access for the newsletter. Also articles can be sent in RTF or PDF formats if the writers have the newest version of Word. Fund Raising 2017/Bradfield: Superior Threads is advertizing their class at the quilt show for $35 for the class and a $10 materials fee. Handi Quilter is bringing 12 machines and so far only 6-7 people have signed up. The ideal is 12, the maximum is 24. Christa Watson’s and Andi Perejda’s classes were cancelled due to low enrollment. Discussion of offering special pricing for a second class if already enrolled in one class for the show. This will be presented at the General Meeting. Wrist bands for daily use and the lanyards that show committee members, students and vendors will use arrived. Fund Raising 2018/Wilson: The 2018 Opportunity Quilt postcards are here with a special thanks to Tim Spinn. The location of the event is still to be announced. Loving Hands/Curran: Twenty-five Guild members showed up for the Quilting Bee and Picnic and by 4 PM all 50 quilts were done. By the end there were 11 fully bound quilts and several members took quilts home to finish. We received two sets of fabric from Candy’s: 15 three yard cuts and 12 patriotic three yard cuts. The next Loving Hands date is September 15 where the tops that were quilted will be finished with binding and labels. Tina will contact SCCQG to see what they recommend and how they propose to send quilts to those who need assistance due to the Irma and Harvey hurricanes. We have quilts to send and prefer to do it through SCCQG. Parliamentarian/Ryan: No report. Note of clarification for Audit Committee, you cannot be on the committee if you served on the Board during the audit year even if you are currently not a Board member. IV. UNFINISHED BUSINESS FFC/Shier: The church was sold to a Korean group, Glendale Grace Brethren Church and contact must wait until after October 22nd. Other locations for our meetings were discussed and any suggestions are still accepted. The final decision will be up to the Board. V. NEW BUSINESS 1. Friendship Groups are mentioned as a benefit of being a member on our website, but none currently exist. Past new members asked about them and told they were “full”. Discussion was if we do not have them, then we should remove that from our website or see about establishing new groups. Items tabled until after the show and after a survey of our members. VI. The meeting was adjourned at 7:40 p.m.

Submitted by Elke Miyahara, for Sharon Bishop, Recording Secretary 8

Fund Raising 2017/Bradfield: The Show is next week. We will have 300 quilts on display so the Convention Center will “scream” Quilts. Set-up will begin Thursday at 3:00. We are selling advance tickets. Tina spoke about getting the word out using the social media Nextdoor. She will be sending an email with step-by-step directions on how to use it to promote the show. Kathi Wilson spoke about bringing items for the Boutique and encouraged anyone with time on their hands to come help in the Boutique during the show where we will be selling fabric for $2 per pound which works out to 50 cents a yard. Quite a bargain. Kathy Fogel spoke on the need for volunteers and asked that everyone pitch in to help during the show. She also talked about the challenge and encouraged everyone to get their entries in. Fund Raising 2018/Coleman Wilson: The date is set for October 20, 2018 for a Home Tour and Quilt Sale. The 2018 Opportunity Quilt will be at the Show and we will be selling tickets. Postcards have been printed. Membership/Millman: We now have 156 members and 65 in attendance. There was a special prize drawing among those that wore their nametags in an effort to encourage members to wear their nametags making it easier to get to know each other. Loving Hands/Curran: At the recent Quilting Bee Marathon, the stack of 50 quilts that had been prepared were quilted and 11 of those were bound and are complete. Many quilts were taken home to be finished. We are looking to SCCQG to lead the way in handling quilt donations for hurricane victims. The next Loving Hands is Friday September 15 when we will be attaching temporary sleeves to quilts for display at the show and sewing labels on completed quilts. V. SHOW AND TELL Many examples of the recent ice-dyeing workshop were shared by members. VI. PROGRAM Karen Gloeggler shared her beautiful quilts and the adventure of writing “Jane Austin Quilts Inspired by her Novels”. VII. The meeting was adjourned at 8:50 p.m.

Sunshine and Shadows Sunshines: Kate Ung is proud to announce that her son, Roger, has completed his first month of kindergarten at Glen Oaks Elementary School. Roger is our youngest member and delights us with his laughter and smiles at the meetings. Roger is enjoying his classmates and riding his scooter to school. Rita Burnett, from Pasadena, donated fabrics for Loving Hands. Gail McCartney was visiting from her home in St. Louis, MO. While here, she participated in our Guild's Quilt Show. Shadows: Barbara Stuart's father passed away the first weekend of September. Jackie Carlos fell while house hunting. She scrapped up her face and knee and sprained her ankle. One might think that would be the house to avoid; however, Jackie and her husband loved the house and they bought it! Thank you.
