the most recent version of the ISO standards.

Starting from Scratch

A core ISO team was formed from internal resources to review the existing system. This was necessary to uncover areas that did not meet the ISO 9001:2015 standard and to define the scope of the implementation.

Next, the team initiated a baseline gap analysis of HICT’s

Since its first day of operations, HICT has put a laser focus on operational efficiency and enhancing customer

satisfaction beyond its contractual obligations to Haldia Dock Complex (HDC). Its objectives are to enhance operational efficiency and reduce turnaround times while maintaining or exceeding customer service quality expectations. With this backdrop, it make sense for Haldia International Container Terminal (HICT) to begin the entire certification process following

system to compare its current work procedures with what was required for certification under ISO 9001:2015. This gap analysis revealed how the company was currently managing its system, including documentation. We also reviewed the existing procedures according to the standards to identify what steps were needed to earn that certification.

The entire operations and maintenance cycle was split into a number of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the operations area and the maintenance area. Each SOP was fine-tuned based on a hazard identification and risk analysis.

Working towards Certification

Because the ISO 9001:2015 standard puts a strong emphasis on risk-

effectiveness and efficiencies of the operations process.

During the journey to International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certification, a pool of DNV GL certified internal auditors were established, who can schedule and perform internal ISO audits to ensure continued compliance.

Audits and Certification

After a great team effort, this mission was accomplished. Certification audits, conducted by an accredited third-party registrar, DNV GL, were carried out. HICT was finally awarded with certifications as per ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management System), ISO 14001:2015 (Environment Management System) and OHSAS 18001:2007 (Occupational Health and Safety Assessment ) under an integrated management system

based thinking, HICT’s ISO team had to look long and hard at all of its processes to determine what could go wrong. Based on our gap analysis findings, the ISO management team entered the most labour-intensive stage of ISO certification: identifying immediate issues to address and establishing specific measurable objectives, and the corrective actions required to resolve them.

An example of how HICT addressed these objectives is the implementation of TOS software (Terminal Operating System) to bring its operations system into compliance. Process maps were developed to show the characteristics of the entire process, including inputs (measurement devices), outputs (deliverables), resources (who and what), methods and metrics or performance indicators, to help determine the
