President’s Message

Fall is in the air, and trees are turning colors to welcome another fall season for the Redwood Empire Model T Club. The Rich’s fall color tour featured gorgeous colors and impressive scenery. The highlight of the morning was a guided tour of the Shone farms. I can’t believe the students have it so good to be studying and working at the farm along with taking home the wine and olive oil they produce. At the November 5th monthly club meeting, we will vote on the Overnighter Tour honorarium for the Tour Planner, and the Overnighter Tour honorarium for the Trouble Truck driver. These Guidelines are to become Standing Rules. The 2016 officer selection committee is preparing a slate of officers to be presented.I will be looking for an update from the Christmas Party Committee. When are reservations due? Do we have a sign-up sheet? We are all looking forward to the November Auction. This is the time to find those hard to find parts you know someone else has but you were afraid to ask if they would part with them.Happy touring,Rich

Fall Color TourFifteen Model T’s arrived for coffee, donuts and breakfast treats for our annual fall color tour. Weather was cool in the morning and warmed up later to a perfect fall day. First stop was Mill Creek Winery in Healdsburg. We took the short trek up Westside Road for a brief stop to buy some wine, chat about the T’s and then back down Westside to Eastside Road and the Shone Farm.

Chris Wills was to be our host for the day and took us for a tour of the farm products produced on the site. Most of us had no ideas of the extent of the classes available to Santa Rosa JC

students. Chris ‘ field of interest was viticulture from vine to bottle. His student helper for the day, Virginia was very knowledgeable of wines and olive oil and served the tasting with Chris.

Shone Farm’s large crop production area allows students to learn sustainable farming practices on a small com-mercial scale. These Sustainable Agriculture students are involved in planting, harvesting, packing, pricing, and selling the vegetables and fruit. During the growing season, produce is sold through weekly on campus and local farm stands, a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) delivery program, and to several high-end markets and restaurants, including the SRJC Culinary Café. In addition to Shone Grown vegetables and fruit, grass-fed beef and lamb are also available for sale. Packaging and selling value-added farm products provides income to support Agriculture Department programs while completing the educational circle for students through their involvement in all phases of agriculture, from planning and production to marketing under the Shone Farm brand.

After the tour and wine tasting, we had lunch on the patio overlooking the beautiful meadows and forests. It did get warm so most of us chose to eat inside. We finished lunch with pumpkin pie and whipped cream.Heading home we had time to reflect on another wonderful reason that Sonoma County provides surprises ev-ery time we tour. How fortunate that the Shone Farm is dedicated to Agriculture and provides the students with state of the art facilities with which to learn, grow and innovate with outstanding educational staff.
