Newsletter for the Moor Pool Garden Suburb Issue 102 June 2019
We are delighted to announce that, thanks to all our
members, volunteers and supporters, Moor Pool
Heritage Trust has been selected as a recipient of
The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service
(QAVS) 2019. This unique UK national honour
recognises the outstanding contributions made to
local communities by groups of volunteers; it has an
equivalent status for voluntary groups as the MBE
for individuals.
This is a very special moment for MPHT. It
represents the culmination of many, many
years’ hard work, all the way from the
campaigning through the 2000s, the
establishment of the Trust in 2011, the
successful and enjoyable raising of the
£300,000+ through 2014 to acquire the Halls
and other assets, and since then our continued
momentum in running, conserving and
improving the Halls and our facilities.
Put simply, thank you. Without the support of
the community, The Trust could not have done it.
There will be a formal presentation of the award by the
Lord Lieutenant of the West Midlands at the Hippodrome
on October 20th – we receive a signed certificate and
commemoratory crystal. We intend to hold a celebratory
event back in the Hall afterwards for all members and
volunteers. Further details and timings to follow – Save
the Date.
The work of the Trust continues apace:
1. The paving in and around the Lower Hall has in parts
been replaced and in other parts renovated. The
drainage has also been improved. The courtyard area
between the Lower Hall and the shops has also been
renovated.
2. We have agreed the design and obtained funding to
renovate the Lower Hall kitchen. This will offer better
equipment all round, including more cupboard space,
larger sinks, new fridge/freezer and modern cooking
facilities, and better access. We are close to agreeing
a date to commence the work – either mid June or
early July.
Most readers will be aware that Raj Hothi will shortly be
leaving Moor Pool News & Wines, having served the
community for almost 10 years. At the time of writing,
this remains subject to the niceties of the legal paperwork
but I’m sure everyone will join me in thanking Raj and H
and wishing them the best for their future endeavours. Raj
has been extraordinarily supportive of the Trust and in
promoting our events over such a long period; we’re
pleased that she wants to stay involved.
We will welcome Ballie and Mandy as the new proprietors
of the shop, hopefully by mid June. The shop will remain
focussed on community driven retailing of provisions.
Ballie and Mandy have promised fresh
investment in both presentation and
equipment, and we in the Trust are very
much looking forward to working with
them. I’m sure that everyone will support
them and of course use the shop.
We have seen three lovely outdoor events in
the past few weeks. Moor Pool in Bloom
held their annual plant sale in early May and
the selection was as usual outstanding. And
the Nettlefold Garden was looking brilliant
for both the Easter Egg Hunt on Good
Friday and secondly for the Places for Pollinators
afternoon in late May. The recognition of the Nettlefold
Garden by West Midlands Butterfly Conservation for its
encouragement of butterflies, moths and bees is well
merited – go and see the new interpretation panel.
Thank you to everyone for contributing to our consultation
process on the Upper Hall toilets and washrooms. There
were many helpful suggestions which we will take into
account. It was a close run thing and both solutions were
very meritorious but on balance, the Trustees are minded
to go for Option A, which is the more traditional split of
ladies and gents.
Now on to the hard work of planning applications, full
specification, detailed costings and then fundraising for
what will be our most ambitious project and campaign
since 2014.
So that’s all. Please do take a step back and enjoy the
recognition conferred upon Moor Pool by the Queen’s
Award. And do enjoy the summer.

Our Summer season is under way,
sessions are on Mondays from 7.30p.m
til about 9.30p.m. We stop halfway
through for a drink. During the
Summer Season, which lasts til Oct the
ladies usually play once a month ‘just
for fun’ – no set dates so if interested
contact mobile below. As ever we’d love to welcome new
members or visitors. We play both alleys, one is flat
while the other is crowned; apart from the angled trough
to bring balls back to the start there are no helpers other
than ourselves! We do have a ramp that can be used to
roll balls if bending is a problem. We are a small but
friendly group and while there is a competitive side to
playing no one takes it too seriously – we all have ‘bad
days’! Do come along and have ago or just watch to see
what it’s all about! It’s worth contacting before you come
just to make sure the session is on – there are odd
evenings when we don’t play. No charge for first few
sessions; for those who’d like to join it is £20 annually.

Moorpool Reading Group
The book we discussed at the
Reading Group meeting of the 16th
May was The Seamstress by the
Spanish author, Maria Duenias.
Initially published in English as
“The time in between” in 2011, it
was translated into 25 languages
and inspired a successful
television series under the same title.
The seamstress follows the main character, Sira Quiroga,
from her poverty stricken childhood, through to her work
as a secret agent for the war time Special Operations
Executive against a backdrop of Franco’s Spain and ex-
pat populated Morocco.
In this historical novel Maria Duenias’ detailed research
and well sourced bibliography stands her in a good stead
whilst not detracting from the imaginative side of her
writing. She presents the main character as living through
a time where the world and especially Europe were in
turmoil. When Sira moves to Morocco she starts mixing
with real influential figures that shaped the course of
history, like for example General Franco.
Overall the book is a gripping, utterly absorbing read. A
tale of love, betrayal and WW2 espionage.
Our next meeting is on Thursday 4th July and our book is
Love is Blind by William Boyd.

Overheard during football on the green:
Small boy: I'm rubbish!
Dad: No you're not. You made a mistake. Everyone
makes mistakes. I did once.
The Bosky is now open, after much work by volunteers
over the winter. This included finger-tip searching for
broken glass – which resulted in 7kg being taken off the
site, most of it in very small pieces (including broken light
bulbs.)
On the day the Bosky was opened a Nuthatch was spotted
flitting about. Maybe it will use the nest box nearby,
officially designed for both nuthatches and robins (of
which there is at least one resident at that end of the
Garden).
The nesting box by the birch trees is definitely occupied!
We are proud that we are now officially recognised by
West Midlands Butterfly Conservation as (the first) urban
Place for Pollinators. As recognition of this we have been
presented with an information board which is now in its
permanent position.
It was officially unveiled on Sunday 19th May by Peter
Seal (Chair of WMBC) and enthusiastically greeted by
those present to celebrate (plus two cats).
Nettlefold Notes
Dear everyone, this month's edition of The Duck
epitomises and captures the spirit of Moor Pool. A
flourishing community that thrives due to the commitment
and pride of local people both from Moor Pool, Harborne
and our city more widely. I would like to add my
congratulations on the news that Moor Pool Heritage Trust
has been recognised by way of the Queen's Award for
Voluntary Service (QAVS) reflecting the dedication of our
volunteers through the years. This is another very special
and memorable moment to cherish and celebrate in the
Moor Pool journey. If this news has inspired you to get
involved then please do - as we are always eager to
welcome new volunteers to help. You will see that there
are many ways to help out particularly at the annual Moor
Pool Heritage Festival on Sunday 14th September. If you
can spare an hour or two to help then please do contact
Barbara Nomikos.
On the subject of events I would particularly like to
mention the Easter Egg Hunt on Good Friday in the
Nettlefold Garden We were blessed with glorious weather
and even an Easter Moo Bunny (thanks Maureen). Our
volunteers did a great job and the event was a huge
success with over 150 people popping along. We think
this will become an annual event in the Moor Pool
calendar - particularly as we are trying hard to get more
families and children involved in our vibrant community.
At this time of year we look forward to spending lots of
time outside in the fresh Moor Pool air and our green open
spaces. So here comes the annual hedge trimming
reminder which always keeps our estate looking pristine
and well kept. One of the joys of our green open spaces is
the proliferation of wildlife that we have across our estate.
Sadly we have recently heard that two young badgers (a
protected species) were found dead in a garden on Carless
Avenue which the RSPCA are currently investigating.
Once we know more we will keep residents updated via
our MRA database. If you are a member and have
provided an e-mail address you will be on the database. If
you have yet to join the MRA I would encourage you to
do so and you can find details about how to do this on the
back page.
Sending you all best wishes for a fabulous Moor Pool
summer,
Sal

The opening of the first house on the Moor Pool
Estate, 1908…The end of May commemorates the
opening of the first house on the Moor Pool Estate on 24th
May 1908- it was officially opened by Henry Vivian who
was the pioneer of the Co-partnership Tenants Scheme.
At the opening ceremony Mr Vivian gave a speech and
the founder John Sutton Nettlefold called upon the
architects Martin and Martin to present Mr Vivian with a
ceremonial silver key with which to unlock and inspect
the house. They then went to the Harborne Institute for
tea where JS Nettlefold gave thanks to Henry Vivian.
Henry Vivian was the Chairman of the Co-partnership
Tenants scheme which formed the basis of Nettlefold’s
vision for Moor Pool of not just building houses but
building a community, and Mr Vivian had a vision of a
community that would say not ‘this house is mine’ but
‘this Estate is ours.’ This vision for building a community
is something that has certainly continued and is
particularly evident from the number of volunteers that
devote their time and support to activities as part of the
Moor Pool community. It is therefore particularly fitting
that the volunteers of the Moor Pool Heritage Trust have
the honour of receiving the Queens Award for
Voluntary Service recognising their contribution and I
am sure Nettlefold and Vivian would have been pleased
to see the legacy that they left with the activities on the
Estate run by volunteers!
And speaking of volunteers … the Moor Pool Heritage
Festival on Sunday 15th September is part of Heritage
Open Days and the theme this year is ‘People Power’!
Please get in touch if you would like to VOLUNTEER on
the day even if it’s just for an hour or two, or if you fancy
helping out on a stall with fete games or helping out in
our tea room! It is the perfect opportunity to celebrate
voluntary action at Moor Pool and enjoy the activities on
the day.
The Moor Pool Heritage Festival is also part of
Birmingham Heritage Week and we will also be putting
on a public Heritage Tour the week after the Moor Pool
Heritage Festival.
Heritage & Tours: We have delivered a number of
outreach talks in April and May and also two private
group walking tours of the Moor Pool Estate followed by
buffet and we have a couple more booked in June! If you
have a group of 8+ interested in a walking tour of the
Estate please get in touch – tours cost £3 per head and can
be accompanied by refreshments and buffet by prior
arrangement. The tour goes round the Estate and ends
with having a go at Skittles in the Edwardian Skittle
Alley!
Update on Hall Activities from Barbara Nomikos, Hall Manager
Alternatively feel free to explore the new Interpretation
Panels dotted around the Estate- and watch this space for
the Self-guided leaflet that will accompany them so you
can explore Moor Pool’s history in greater detail at your
leisure!
Lower Hall : Progress has been made on rectifying
damage caused by the flooding last year – new paving
has been re-instated so that it is now even and additional
drainage has also been supplied. Work on refurbishing
the Lower Hall kitchen will commence mid- June so that
by July we should have a brand new kitchen in the Lower
Hall – this has been partly funded by fundraising events
and kind donations.

It is always an error in diplomacy to press a matter when it
is quite clear that no further progress is to be made. It is
also a great error if you ever give the impression abroad

With the wonderful news about Moor Pool Heritage
Trust’s Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, I would
like to say a special thank you to all those who support me
with the education offer at Moor Pool. Our upcoming June
local history sessions would not be possible without input
from Maureen Mauser and Marilyn Duggins, as well as
Bob Boucher who is kindly allowing the pupils to view
the snooker hall. There are also so many others who have
helped to shape our education offer since its inception, and
without all of their help, we would not have been able to
achieve all that we have. Over the past couple of weeks,
Barbara and I have been interviewing prospective students
from the University of Birmingham as Moor Pool is once
again participating in the Student Placement scheme
which the University runs. We are hoping that the
successful students will start their volunteer placement in
the autumn, and that they will find it as fulfilling as Sarah
Gibbs did during 2018.
It was great to help out with the Easter Egg Hunt over
Easter, and since then I have had a couple of other
requests for ‘Treasure Hunts’ or Trails around the Estate;
the first of these will be for a local school who are visiting
later in the month. Other regular informal education
sessions continue to run with the monthly drop in Lego or
Den Building sessions, which are taking place in the
Lower Hall or Old Orchard respectively.
Thanks to Lizey Thomson we had an amazing start to our
local history talks programme, with a packed Lower Hall
hearing about the progress of work on The Roundhouse in
Birmingham, which has whetted our appetite for when this
beautiful old building reopens its doors to the public again
in 2020. The next talk will be given by David Humphries,
who will be speaking about Pre-Fab housing in his
entertaining talk entitled ‘Those Damn Tin Cans!’ on
Tuesday 4th June, with refreshments from 6.30pm, and the
talk beginning at 7pm. For the following talk in our
programme, which takes place on July 23rd, we have an
exciting change to the published schedule. Paul McGarrity
from the Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) has
agreed to give a talk on the archaeological dig which is
taking place on the proposed site of HS2, one of the
largest digs in the whole country, to share details about
some of their fascinating finds.
Work has been continuing on our Education Allotment,
and thanks to the many people who have helped to make
the area look better and better! Those of you who follow
us on social media may have seen the photographs of
some splendid looking artichokes, and some delicate
looking asparagus. We also recently harvested some
rhubarb, which made an appearance in one of the cakes
served at the coffee mornings in May! So if you are

interested in trying out some gardening, but are not quite
ready to on an entire whole allotment, come along on
Wednesday afternoons between 1pm – 3pm, and we will
find you a patch to start ‘growing your own’!

Planning Applications
The majority of residents enjoy the estate environment
and support the original concept of 100 years ago. The
conservation status, enhanced with Article 4(2), which
covers the whole estate, has facilitated this.
Occasionally, however, proposed changes do not sit
comfortably within this original vision or current status.
To avoid reliance on lamp-post notifications, we will be
listing future planning applications in The Duck. The
reference number will enable access to the full planning
details and allow informed comment or objection.
So watch this space in future issues.
