President’s ReportThisismyfinalPresident’smessageasmytermontheBoardofDirectorsas President will expire after the Annual Meeting on March 28. I want to thank the residents for electing me to serve on the Board of Directors and thank the Board for allowing me to serve as President. It has been a truly rewarding experience working with an exceptional group of individuals who work hard every day to maintain and improve our little corner of Paradise. Also, thanks to a very professional staff who continue to amaze us all with their dedication to duty and overall efforts to achieve excellence.

This has been a particularly interesting year and we accomplished a lot of things:

• Paid off the loan that permitted construction of the Spring Lake Pavilion, several years earlier than expected.• Received all permitting associated with the dock that will be built in conjunction with the new pool at Spring Lake. We expect this project to begin at the close of the swimming season this coming fall with completion expected by late spring 2016.• Expanded the Distributed Antenna System to improve cell phone coverage, especially for AT&T customers.• Completedtheconstructionofanew“monopine”celltowertofillina significantcellphonecoveragegapintheDolphinHeadarea.• Received “Best Housing Community” award from the Island Packet readers' poll. (For the third time)• Voted “Favorite Gated Community” in a readers' choice poll from Hilton Head Monthly.• Resolved the status and future of the Salty Fare property at our Cypress Gate.

IwishthebesttothenewBoardofDirectorsandOfficersastheycontinue to care for the best community on Hilton Head Island.

I hope to see all of you at our Annual Meeting on Saturday, March 28, 10:00 AM, at the Plantation House.

Monopine/Distributed Antenna System (DAS)Aresident’srecentemailremindedmethatsometimeswe get so close to a project we forget that not everyone knows all the details and the “lingo.” I appreciated being reminded. For those of you who are up-to-speed this will beaquickreview;forfirsttimereadersonthistopic, hereare the details.

There are two separate telecommunications projects nearing completion, separate but complementary. The Distributed Antenna System (DAS) consists of seven concrete poles about 75 feet tall which were commissioned by AT&T, but built by Crown Castle International. This project is almost complete and is going through testing and calibration. The seven pole locations are: two along Whooping Crane Way (one close to Rookery Way and the other Teal Lane), Seabrook Drive between Christo and Florencia, another at the Dolphin Head Recreation Area, another on High Bluff Road between Jingle Shell and Oyster Shell, one at the corner of Oyster Reef Drive and High Bluff Road, and finally, towardstheendofOysterReefCove.Thesesevenlocations are now switched on and operating. This is an AT&T-driven project so their phone and other wireless services will improve with this additional upgrade.

The separate, but complementary, project is the 149-foot monopine, which is located on the east side of Dolphin Head Drive between Whitetail Deer Lane and High Bluff

Road. This project was commissioned by Verizon. The monopine is also owned, built, and operated by Crown Castle International, a cell tower builder (same company that built and owns the DAS). Verizon will lease a space on the monopine for their equipment to be located. The monopine is built; however, for whatever reason, Version is dragging their feet getting their equipment installedonthemonopine.OnceVerizon’sequipmentisinstalled and the switch is turned on, Verizon customers will experience improvement in cell phone and other Verizonwirelessservices.Ihesitatetogiveafirmdatefor Version to install their equipment because three other install dates came and went without any action by Verizon. We are now being told Verizon will be up and running by the end of March 2015. AT&T has indicated they will locate on the second spot on the monopine to allow for additional signal strength and capacity. We do nothaveafirmdateonthatinstallation.

Some of this gets a little technical for the non-techies out there like me. I have been told AT&T and Verizon do not transmit using the same technology. Consequently, Verizon’ssignaltravelsfurtherthanAT&T’s.Thisiswhy (we are told) AT&T needs the additional concrete poles to get the same coverage and signal penetration as Verizon. That said, as more cell phone and data users access the area where an antenna is located, the coverage area of that antenna shrinks so you either have to turn up the signal strength or put more antennas closer together. It is our prediction that both AT&T and Verizon will install their equipment on all of the available towers, both concrete (DAS) and the monopine, at some point just to accommodate capacity issues and signal penetration.

The good news is once it is all completed and all the antennas are transmitting, we will have drastically improved our cell phone coverage on HHP for both Verizon and AT&T.

Conservancy Foundation DonationsAs of February 26, almost $21,410 has been donated by property owners to the Hilton Head Plantation Conservancy Foundation. This compares with the $14,309 that was collected in 2014. If you wish to contribute to the Foundation, please make your checks payable to the Hilton Head Plantation Conservancy Foundation or (HHPCF). All donations are totally tax-deductibleandareearmarkedspecificallyfortheimprovement and upkeep of the Whooping Crane and Cypress Conservancies. In addition to the new signsidentifyingthenativefaunaandfloraalongthe Whooping Crane Conservancy boardwalk, three new educational signs have been installed along the boardwalk. These new signs were designed by Todd Ballantine, one of the original architects and builders of the boardwalk. These new signs were made possible

AlligatorsWith spring just around the corner, it's a good idea to talk about our friend Mr. Gator. Mr. Gator has survived from prehistoric times and is considered a “keystone species”, which is a species that helps to fashion its environmentandinfluencethetypesofspeciesthatlivethere. Alligators perform necessary services like providing freshwater for other wildlife to drink during droughts by digging “gator holes” that bring ground water to the surface. They help to control the number of the species theyeat, whichinturncaninfluenceallofthespeciesthat each of their prey feeds on. If a keystone species becomes extinct, the entire ecosystem changes, and many species that have come to depend on the keystone species may also face extinction.

Alligators are protected by both State and Federal laws, but still require our assistance. You can help protect our alligatorsbyavoidingcloseinteractionwiththem.Don’tharass an alligator or swim in water (or let your pets swim in water) known to be alligator habitat. All of our lagoons should be treated as alligator habitat. Above all, NEVER feed an alligator. Alligators fed by humans come to expect food with each human encounter, and if they don’tgetit, mayactaggressively.Sincealligatorsareexpertsatfindingtheirwayhomewhenrelocated, anyalligators deemed to be aggressive are destroyed rather than relocated. A fed alligator is a dead alligator. If you see anyone feeding or harassing an alligator, please call Security immediately at 681-2459.

Although the overwhelming majority of my human friends on the Plantation live in blissful harmony, a very small number of my homo sapienneighborsdonotflywell…I mean, play well with others. This all leads to the need for rules of conduct for common properties. Every aviator and even birdwatchers have a Code of Conduct. It's one of the reasons why I feel safe in my nest. You deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. You should be warmly

greeted with a smile. Your environment should be comfortable, friendly, clean, and safe.

Dress CodeAlthough a shirt will throw my aerodynamics and piloting out of whack, my human friends on Hilton Head Plantation are required to wear upper body garments during all activities (except males during aquatics) in all facilities (including the POA Service Center and SchedulingOffice).Bathingsuitsarerequiredwhenusing aquatic facilities. Cut-offs, street wear, and thong bathing are prohibited. This individual became animated

to the point of using hand gestures to express their disapproval. My species is unfortunately associated by nomenclature with such a provocative and inappropriate gesture. We birds on Hilton Head Plantation are offended to have our species associated with such a degrading symbol. The guest had a great deal of obstinacy and refused to budge on the matter.

In accordance with our adopted Code of Conduct, loud, profane, indecent, or abusive language shall not be used. Lowcountry Nature / HHP Clubs March 2015 - Page 7

Lowcountry Nature: American White IbisThis bird is a common visitor in the southern coastal areas. The ibis is easy to identify by their white plumage, long necks, and pink facial skin plus a long curved bill. Before breeding, the bill and legs are bright red-orange but when in breeding season this changes to a deep pink on the billandalmostapurple-redcoloronthelegs.Thetipsoftheadult’swingsareblackbutnotusuallyseenunlessthebirdisflying.SeeninflighttheyareofteninlonglinesorVformationwith their long necks stretched and legs held out behind.

Breeding takes place along the Atlantic coast from the Carolinas south to Florida. Adult American white ibis pair in the spring of their third summer and breed in large groups which may include other waterbirds. The female selects a sight near water and the male will assist in bringing nesting material. The female may lay from 1-5 pale blue-green eggs with a few brown spots. During incubation the male seldom takes food as he stays near the nest as protector against a predator, which might even be another ibis. Some other common raiders of the eggs includetheboat-tailedgrackle,fishcrow,gulls,andratsnake.Theincubationperiodisaboutthreeweeksandoncehatched both parents share, and take turns in nest time. Most of the feedings take place when the parents swap nest duty.

A newly hatched ibis has a short straight bill at birth and an egg tooth which falls off within a few days. Their down feathers, which appear purple at birth, deepen to dark brown or black on the head and wings. Tee TimersThe Tee Timers are doing well. We've been playing Oyster Reef, Dolphin Head, and Bear Creek golf courses (all located here in HHP) this winter and at least it's been a lot milder than last year. Matt Stewart, Dolphin Golf Club Pro, has offered to give us group lessons when we play there and Keith Marks, Oyster Reef Golf Club Golf Instructor, has offered to give us a demonstration which we will do when the weather breaks. So come spring, I feel we will all be playing like pros.

If you'd be interested in joining our fun group on Wednesday afternoons, the Tee Timers are taking names for a waiting list or possible openings. Farmers ClubAfter another rough month, we can only hope that March is being a little kinder. I suggest that when you

planttomatoes, don’tstakethematfirstincaseyouneedtocoverthemwith a pot if a late frost threatens. Plant them sideways in a shallow hole with only the top leaves sticking up, and they will form roots all along the stem for added vigor. Give them a

sprinkle of lime and add some compost to the planting soil. We also water them in with a transplant fertilizer such as Quick-start to give them a fast start. Do not put in peppers or eggplant until the soil has warmed. Check the planting chart at www.hhpfarmers.com for a lot of good information, but always harden off any young transplants by putting them out in the sun for30minutesthefirstday,andgraduallyincreasingthe time to 3 hours so they can withstand hot sun and cool nights.

Classes are taught by a Fred Astaire Dance Studio instructor, and include waltz, swing, shag, and several Latin dances. There is a nominal fee of $6.00 per person per class to cover expenses. There are no other dues and you pay only for the classes you attend.

New members are always welcome. You will have an opportunity to attend other Dance Club functions, meet new friends, have fun, and learn how to dance. Spring Lake Tennis Club NewsTwenty-eight hardy souls played mixed doubles at our annual Soup and Chili Social on February 6. They were joined by others for the warming homemade soups and chili provided by the Social Committee and chili by Peter Labeck.

Our St. Patrick's "Luck of the Irish" round robin and corned beef and cabbage dinner was held on March 13. Wearing of the "green" was encouraged for all participants. After social and sometimes competitive tennis, we enjoyed a traditional meal and favorite beverages.

Next up on Saturday, April 25 is the Plantation Court Challenge against the Country Club of Hilton Head. The players from Spring Lake had a very good day

and won the Challenge last year. Look for some exciting and entertaining matches as we take the courts to defend our title. Matches will be played at 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM, and 2:30 PM.

Please check for further details, match schedules, and locations at the Spring Lake Pro Shop (681-3626). Come out to support your favorite HHP team. --Lee Hakala
