Mostar in the competition for the best small destination in Europe of 2014

Globalgrasshopper, one of the most important travel portals, has launched a selection of the best tourist destinations when it comes to small cities of Europe, and one of the cities in the competition is the Bosnian pearl on the Neretva river - Mostar.

In cooperation with Hotel.info website, Globalgrasshopper chose 52 picturesque small towns from all over Europe, and the winners will be selected by visitors of these 2 websites.

Sarajevo among the most desirable tourist destinations in 2014

The capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina will in 2014. be one of the top travel destinations. After the National Geographic magazine listed Sarajevo as a must-see destination this year, the same was done by the American portal Daily Beast.

In 2014 Sarajevo will mark 100 years from the assassination of the Austro-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie. The event trigered the First World War, so Sarajevo will be the central point of celebrating the centennial anniversary from the start of that bloody conflict, states the Daily Beast.This will be the year when the famous City Hall (Vijećnica) will open its doors to the public, the pearl of the pseudo-moorish architecture and a symbol of the city, which was completely burned in 1992. 2 milion books of National and University library of Bosnia and Herzegovina burned in this occasion.Sarajevo is a city rich in culture and tradition, but this is not only what makes it attractive. Rostovo – Balkan’s Schwarzwald the harbor of peace in the heart of Bosnia

Bosnian hills, mountains and gentle valleys, just like many places in the Western Balkans, have their secrets

Perhaps it was heared about these natural decorations, but they largely remained hidden and somewhat. Far from elite magazines and documentaries of the famous TV networks.

One such place is Rostovo , located between Bugojno and Novi Travnik , in the heart of central Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is situated at 1160 meters above sea level.

Rostovo is geographically located at the crossroads : Sarajevo - Zenica - Travnik - Bugojno - Kupres - Livno - Split . It is 15 kilometers far from Bugojno , 110 kilometers from Sarajevo, 120 from Mostar, 60 kilometers from Zenica and 160 from Split .Together with its green fields and hills dotted with houses, cottages and places for relaxation and recreation , this corner reveals the magical side of Bosnia and Herzegovina , which is often blurred with tales of poverty , government crises, corruption and crime...

In the summer Rostovo’s greenery is reminiscent of its Russian namesake , the city of Rostov , one of the oldest towns in Russia and an important tourist center in the so-called Golden ring on the shores of Lake Nera in Jaroslavljska field .

Mostly, nicely arranged arable land and clean fields, numerous streams, can make you think that you are in the mountains of Switzerland, in the Schwarzvald area, on German south-west or even agricultural landscapes of northern Germany.

Lukomir sank into hibernation, the villagers went down to the city

For already a month, Lukomir is in hibernation where it will remain until mid-April when its inhabitants will return to their homes, confirmed mr. Mujo Masleša, whose house in Lukomir is also locked until the spring.

This is the third winter as villagers of Bjelašnica village Lukomir go down in the cities, Tarcin, Hadzici, where they will remain until spring. Therefore, the pens and stables with 15 households of about 3,000 sheeps and cows have been emptied.

The centuries-old tradition of overwintering in their own homes has been cut two winters ago, and the upcoming is the third winter, during which Lukomir village is without villagers and the most isolated place in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

From 17th November, when the last villagers got down from 1495 m above sea level, due to which Lukomir is famous as the only inhabited place over 1300 m above sea level, 22 locked houses are waiting until April for their hosts.

Lukomir is the last Bosnian village with houses of stone covered with shingles and during winter covered in snow. In summer there are 22 inhabited houses, and on the rich fields one can see over 4000 sheeps.

Asteroid called Sarajevo orbits in the solar system!

A group of astronomers discovered a new asteroid and called it Sarajevo. This is the first time that a celestial body wears a name linked with Bosnia and Herzegovina, and this is thanks the two astronomers from Croatia who work in Spain.

The asteroid was discovered by a group of astronomers from the Spanish observatory "La Sagra". In the group that discovered the asteroid, are two Croatian astronomers Alexander and Stefan Cikota who obtained the right to give names to some newly discovered asteroids.

Since the Astronomical Society Orion marked this year the 50th anniversary of modern astronomy in BiH, Cikota decided to make an honor to the Orion society and allowed them to propose the name for the asteroid.

"Our proposal was to call the asteroid Sarajevo," said Mohammed Muminović, the president of Orion society, who officially announced it today during the promotion of a magazine about science, nature, man and ecology "FONDEKO world" and lectures "Target Earth - Environmental effects of asteroids and comets. "

Asteroid, close to us in space wears the name Sarajevo since 22nd of July 2013.

Lakes across the country have been the inspiration of polish Michal Sleczek to make a series of photographs.

Sleczek came in Bosnia in February. Beauty of the mountains made him lose his breath so he decided to make some amazing photos.

"I was curious when the beauty of the land is in question. I realized that the beautiful mountains and lakes, in addition to the kind people and culture of this country, are the most beautiful thing I've seen," says Sleczek.

Of all the lakes that he saw, he is fond of the two special ones. These are Blidinje and Boračko lake. Apart of these, the employee EUFOR and Getty Images photographer, was on Prokoško lake, Jablaničko lake and Lake Rama.

Beside lakes, on his official Google+ profile one can see photos of Bosnian mountains, National Park Sutjeska, waterfalls from all over the country, as well as many other photos that are related to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“This name was confirmed by the International Astronomical Union, which is responsible for naming objects in close and distant universe. U.S. space agency NASA and its Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which keeps a database of small bodies of the solar system, announced in their official newsletter that the asteroid which had a temporary name 2007 YG59, received serial number 178267 and name Sarajevo", said Muminović.

Asteroid Sarajevo is a body that belongs to the main asteroid belt. Its path around the Sun is an ellipse, and it is located between Mars and Jupiter. At the nearest point from the Sun it is 405 million kilometers far, and the farthest 525 million kilometers. Its one tour around the Sun takes 5,48 years.

The approximate diameter of the body is between three and seven kilometers.

Funds for the Bosnian astronomy

Muhamed Muminović noted that the gathering money for the basic operation of the Astronomical Society for the next 2 years is in procees, for promotion of astronomy so that the Orion association can find solutions and funds to rebuild the observatory on Trebević mountain. So far 11000 $ have been collected.

"Through IndieGoGo site we launched a campaign aimed at raising funds for the basic operation of the Astronomical Society for the next two years. Thus we can concentrate on the search for funds (EU, etc.) for the final restoration of the observatory," said Muminović.

This action has been launched in cooperation with the Orion society by Tea Tamim from Mostar, dr. of astrophysics, who is employed at the U.S. space agency (NASA).

At the edge of the beautiful Rakitnica canyon, nature and hiking lovers, cyclists and motorcyclists from spring to late autumn visit Lukomir.

And until the snow melts, the villagers from Lukomir, spend the winter “on the asphalt”, they say the neighboring villages have no trouble maintaining the road network during the winter. As an example they list Umoljani, Sinanovići, Tušila, Pervize, Bobovica, the villages that belong to the Trnovo municipality which regularly maintains the roads to these villages.

Lukomir and Čuhovići, belonging to the municipality of Konjic, remain cut off, because the roads are not cleaned, therefore Lukomir is empty for the third winter now. It used to be different, the roads were cleaned regularly, so villagers of Lukomir didn’t have to be "displaced" in the surroundings of Sarajevo.

Stećci (the stone tombstones) from 14th and 15 century in the field of Lukomir indicate that the area was inhabited 600 years ago.

In Lukomir after the war a social home has been built. In all travel brochures for rural tourism among the top destinations is the Lukomir village. Movies like "Silent Gunpowder" and "The sky above the landscape" have been filmed here.

However, it is true that Rostovo is a port of peace in the heart of Bosnia, agreed by the visitors and local residents.Beside peacefulness , which is so necessary for a modern man, Rostovo can be proud of clean air and unspoiled nature as well.

Rostovo has been in the focus of public in 1984, when an open sports and recreational center was opened there for the needs of the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo. From this period, many remember the beautiful memories from Rostovo.

However , the tragic events of the 90s in the Balkans have casted a black veil on this area and until a few years ago the only thing you could see was the “dead” picture of some better times.With the construction of the road to Novi Travnik, Bugojno and the rest of Bosnia and Herzegovina, life is slowly returning to this region.Although this area is often visited in winter, when it offers plenty of enjoyment and winter sports , there is no doubt that even in the hot summer days it can be an excellent place to escape from the city noise and hot asphalt .

Rostovo offers a rich sports and recreational facilities, hiking trails, trails for mountain biking, sports and recreational horseback riding. One can find tennis courts, gyms etc. The region of middle Bosnia is famous for its hospitality and a plentiful tables.

Nevertheless, the fairytale Rostovo raises hopes that on the Balkans not everything is empty and destroyed, and that for these areas hope exists. Perhaps that hope keeps the faith that Rostovo will indeed one day be the Bosnian Schwarzwald or at least know as the Russian Rostov.
