Though this page is entitled “From the President’s Desk”, I am taking this unprecedented opportunity to editorialise.

First, on behalf of all members, I want to express our thanks to Wendy Geddes for selflessly volunteering to act as Interim President when no other offers of help were forthcoming. But I must remind you that

Wendy’s considerable generosity comes with an important proviso: the prefix “Interim” means that her term of office will last no more than six months. At the AGM, Keven Hyde was nominated for the position of President, but he volunteered to temporarily continue in the role of Secretary, because the club cannot function without a secretary. Thus CCG is now in the precarious situation whereby we need someone to assume the role of secretary as soon as possible, so that Keven can become President and Wendy can step down.

Stated clearly and concisely: CCG needs a Secretary, asap! And Keven is willing to coach a volunteer in the basics of the role and provide mentoring and support while they familiarise themselves with the essential duties.

! Coffee and Critique 10:00 am, Tuesday 13th March, 2018

GO GOURMET, Little Mountain Central, 9/65 Pierce Ave., Little Mountain

Looking ahead, the set subject for April is “Creative” — basically, that means: have fun, go crazy with your camera, or play like a

reckless kid in you favourite photo processing app.If you want critiques of your solutions, then come along for a chat

over coffee and cake, or chai and a snack, but remember to bring along a printed image to join in a friendly discussion on all things photographic — or whatever else comes to mind.

If you have some ideas, or questions, or want some advice on a particular problem, then these informal meetings provide the perfect forum. The opportunity to show your images, to follow up on questions that might arise, as well as hear constructive and friendly critiques on pieces of work, is a good way to improve your appreciation of photography. Please RSVP to Wendy by Friday 9th March if you plan to attend.Link to location on Google Maps.

My First Fifty Years in Portrait Photography by Rick Sherwin

Rick Sherwin is an Honorary Fellow of the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers. Educated

in Alberta, Canada, these days he runs independent photography and Photoshop classes at various art centres on the Sunshine Coast. They may be once a week for six weeks or a more intensive or specialized weekend workshop.

He says of his photography: “I capture the world as I see it through my camera. A little piece of my heart and soul is in each image I create. I am in awe of what nature creates and want to show images [that] convey what I feel about the beauty that surrounds us.”

Rick’s Share Night presentation will take you on a journey from large cameras and large film to today’s small cameras with many pixels. Along the way you may pick up some tips on portrait techniques that have survived through the years as well as a look at some of the possibilities that the digital era has given us.

CCG Weekend at Redcliffe: Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd April, 2018

After a successful morning at Mary Cairncross Reserve enjoyed by around 14 members of the Club, I hope more members will decide to come on our weekend to Redcliffe. It is within easy driving distance and offers

plenty of photographic opportunities including a beautiful foreshore, the famous Jetty, Bee Gee Way etc. The plan is that we will all meet on Saturday morning for coffee around 10 am, then we will have a “Camera Capers” of sorts (final details yet to be determined), followed by meeting up again for a break and lunch, then more photography, free time later in the afternoon and then drinks and dinner altogether at the Redcliffe RSL.

We will have a sunrise shoot on Sunday morning (6 am or probably a bit earlier) followed by a visit to the famous Redcliffe Jetty markets, before making our way home again in your own time.

If you are planning on joining us for this fun weekend, please book your own accommodation — I suggest you do this as soon as possible otherwise you could miss out. David and I will be staying at the Redcliffe Motor Inn in Anzac Parade, so you might like to join us there or choose somewhere different; it’s entirely up to you.

Make sure your name is down in the Events Book if you are coming and please let me know where you are staying.Ann Bryan, Events Coordinator, Ph. 5476 2046 or 0411 486 939. Email: [email protected]

TIME TO MOVE ON by Ed Anderson

It’s time! I’ve been monkeying around with the CCG Newsletter,

COASTAL EXPOSURES, for long enough. Besides, I really need to take some concentrated time out to learn how to use that bloody new camera of mine.

I’m confident, that in handing over the newsletter to your choice of our new Newsletter Editor, Nikki Stewart, it is being placed in very competent hands indeed. I can assure you that Nikki will give you a newsletter with a fresh, clean, professional and creative look that the club will be proud of.

So, I’m moving on, parachuting into a new position that I cunningly convinced the committee to create, just for me. But what, you might ask, will this “Technical Coordinator” be doing?

Primarily, the role of Technical Coordinator includes the job of Webmaster for both the MYPHOTOCLUB (MPC) website and the CCG Website. The Committee recently decided that we will continue to maintain the CCG site

solely as an auto-redirection link to the MPC website — there will be no content remaining on the CCG site. This ensures continuity of name recognition for “Caloundra Camera Group” in cyberspace and, incidentally, allows us to retain the secretarial email address: “[email protected]”.

But that is not all; the term “coordinator” in the title is there because the role also includes providing ongoing technical support and advice to our DPI and Print Coordinators, and our Grading Committee. Additionally, the Webmaster’s duties include provision of single-channel liaison with the MPC Administrator on behalf of our Committee and the general membership. This year, liaison has expanded significantly to include running of PSQ’s Salon of Excellence, Queensland online, by taking advantage of MPC’s ability to set up external competitions. From time to time, the Technical Coordinator can also be available to conduct research and provide advice to the Committee on maintenance and upgrading of our equipment, including hardware and software.

We have only just begun to realise the full benefits of using MPC: As time permits, I plan to expand our use of the website to include a larger range of club information, such as administrative material (the Constitution and Bylaws, Committee Meeting/AGM Minutes, Duty Statements, etc.), illustrated Events and Outings Reports, photography advice by experienced members, share night presenters, and others — and so on. Further ideas welcome.

Before I sign off, I want to express my sincere gratitude to all those who, with good grace and patience, encouraged and supported me in the role of Newsletter Editor — the list is long, but you know who you are. Thanks!
