HANDICAPS Lee Challis, has made the necessary adjustments after NORTH OXFORD performances. He assumes Club members’ HCs haven’t changed. HCs are included at the end of this Newsletter but may be subject to change should any Club Member contact him with a new HC. AS SOON AS ANY CLUB MEMBER HAS A NEW HC, PLEASE INFORM LEE IMMEDIATELY – DO NOT WAIT UNTIL A SOCIETY MEDAL DAY TO TELL HIM. FIXTURES See separate Fixtures Page for the WHOLE of the NEW SEASON – chosen by the Committee. MAIDENHEAD has now been booked for the JULY MEDAL : MONDAY 21st JULY 2014 : Subsidised. Cost to members is £45 for those who attended Henley & £50 for others. Guests are £58. Also, in order not to lose deposit, WYCHWOOD has been rebooked for the first golf day of next season : FRIDAY 24th OCTOBER 2014. This first medal day will be subsidised.
Also, following the cancellation of Wychwood, it has been re-booked for Friday 24th October 2014 in order to retain our £100 deposit - it will be the first medal of the new season and likely to be subsidised.
SCORECARDS Ian Brown very kindly agreed/offered to do the cards and, after the fiasco of some members idea of completing them in previous months, made the following comments :
x I give a score of 9 out of 10 for the completion of the cards by everyone. They were not too bad. x Biggest issue were several where the gross score minus handicap did NOT equal the net score. x I just gave the cards back to the offenders and they ultimately corrected them. x There were a few cards where totals had not been done
So, at last SOME PROGRESS, although I think Ian was rather generous with his score of 9 after the secretary looked at them to do the eclectic table ! The way some write the numerals is almost laughable. Therefore, as “teacher” would say . . . . ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT ! NEW LOGO Last month, Andy Beal has suggested we design a NEW CHOLSEY GOLF SOCIETY LOGO – don’t really have an official one at present. If you would like to design one, could receive £10 off a medal day. It needs to be fairly simple, obviously incorporating “Cholsey Golf Society”. The idea is to perhaps have some clothing items for sale including the logo either screen printed or embroidered . Send your designs to Andy : [email protected] Not sure HOW MANY DESIGNS Andy has received – if you have had a go, please send the secretary a copy too.

WE ALREADY HAVE the 9 Race Sponsors & have 10 advertisers. Just 3 whole pages & 2 half pages of adverts to fill. That means we have already raised £310.
However, the ONE sponsor we don’t have is a main sponsor for the event – to cover PART of the overall costs : the hire of the hall/kitchen, bar licence, new betting slips, programmes, cleaning and publicity costs – around £300 in total – so looking for a minimum of £60 – see below.
YOUR HELP AND SUPPORT Obviously the Society’s main purpose is to provide monthly opportunities at reasonable costs to play golf and enjoy the banter and social life that goes along with belonging to and being a part of any group/club/organisation/society such as ours.
NB: Subsidies for Golf Days and Captain’s Day/Weekend rely totally on the amounts raised through our 2 fund-raising efforts.
By joining the Society there is the expectation that you will support both The Christmas Raffle and Race Night in ANY way you can. It is appreciated that selling Raffle tickets is not for everyone, although we did achieve a marvellous total this year due to your efforts, but if you weren’t able to support it, then you might be able to help with the Race Night in one of the following ways:
x Attend the Race Night yourself x Bring some friends & family along to the Race Night x Buy a horse (£5 – gives you a chance of winning £30 - Available to buy at Frilford – Keith bought 5 last year and 3 WON !!!) x Find a MAIN SPONSOR to help cover the costs of staging the event

If we can’t find a Main Sponsor from a business contact, then those members who were unable to support the raffle might wish to help by making a donation to cover the costs of staging the event – meaning more is raised for the Society SUBSIDIES.

PROGRAMMES & FLYERS: if you have access to a photocopier then we might be able to print them without any direct cost or need to sponsor the cost – Ted Lewis, some years ago, when we used to distribute a hard copy Newsletter to each member, photocopied them at work, saving the Society over £200 each year.
NB: Obviously, it is not expected that those members who sold/bought themselves Raffle tickets, should feel obliged to support the Race Night other than by buying a horse or two, hopefully attending on the night and bringing with them a friend/relative/partner – you’ve done your “bit” already.

RULES 1. ALL matches are MATCHPLAY format. Regarding Handicaps : 3/4 difference between lowest and highest. 2. Responsibility of FIRST DRAWN name/pair to choose venue and arrange match. 3. Every effort should be made to complete matches in “good time” by COMPLETITION DATE indicated and not leave it to the last moment. 4. With agreement matches can be played on Medal Days but this is not ideal. 5. The committee have the right to amend/extend any COMPLETION DATES stated by which matches should be played, if there are relevant/particular/exceptional circumstances. 6. Due to particular circumstances, if a player/pair wishes for an extension (maximum 3 wks) to play his/their match, he/they must make the request to the secretary as soon as possible and make clear the reasons. The committee will let the players involved know their decision within one week of receiving the request. 7. Unless there are exceptional circumstances, the ATTENDANCE on the COMPLETION MEDAL DATE and/or the NUMBER of ATTENDANCES at MEDAL DAYS will decide the outcome of any matches NOT played by the stated COMPLETION DATE. The Committee’‛s decision is final. 8. MATCH REPORTS – the secretary would welcome reports for inclusion in the Newsletter (serious or amusing).

This year we have not had a FIXTURES SECRETARY. The committee chose the venues and Dave Evans did the bookings. We will need a new Fixtures Secretary for next year so if anyone is interested, please let one of the present committee know. Usually, venues for the following season are decided by the Fixtures Secretary after consultation with members and then they start booking them up in May for October onwards. NB: October already booked – Wychwood – didn’t want to lose deposit.

HHAALLFF aann IINNCCHH CCOOXX WWIINNSS IITT !! Our sadistic secretary put Michael Hayward (below) in the first group in order for him to display his undoubted driving skills to the rest of us. He didn’‛t disappoint ! At the first he produced a classic topped hook - rolled a fully 7 yards, just past the ladies tee. “OPPPS !” said Michael, smiling as he turned around to face the enthralled audience – who were also smiling. “GREAT !” they exclaimed in unison, “ That’‛s the WFTTS sorted. We can all relax now.” EVERYONE did and hit superb drives . . . . that is . . . . until Ricky Cox (4th group from 5) stepped up onto the tee. He was so relaxed, he could barely stand – those of you who have been on Tour with him know this sight only too well. In fact such was his mood, he failed to get a good grip around his club, casually took up his stance (too far away as it turned out), and didn’‛t even bother with a practice swing. Down went his head, up went the club, down came the club coinciding with the head now going up (in anticipation of a superb 45 0 angled 250+ yard drive straight down the middle of the fairway – bit like Roy’‛s imagination the previous month) . . . . the result was unbelievable. One mistake, even two, and he might have got away with it, but THREE errors – no chance – the ball literally rolled off the tee and settled some ½ inch in front of it. Ricky, head still up of course, and totally oblivious to the fact that he hadn’‛t felt a solid connection between club and ball, stared down the fairway, struggling to focus his blurred vision and spot where the ball had gone.
From behind, he then heard the chuckling voice of Ian Breakspear, “What the bloody hell are you looking down there for ! LOOK DOWN at your feet you plonker.” Ricky’‛s head slowly twisted right, bent forward, and behold – there was the ball. Was this the WORST EVER WFTTS ? The simply answer was PROBABLY. It had clearly bettered the previous worst, Brian Corker’‛s once in a life drive at the first at Badgemore some 10 years ago. Brian somehow managed to lift the ball, perpendicular to the direction he was aiming, just clearing the 8’‛ high hedge to the right-hand side of the tee-box, thus avoiding the left side hedge which has become a favourite over the years for many of our members. But I digress – back to Ricky who was somewhat taken-a-back. Even though his body was relaxed, his brain was still functioning and he blurted out . . . . “All’‛s not lost, there’‛s still one group to go and it includes our secretary . . . . perhaps he’‛ll hit it BACKWARDS !” (continued next page)
BBRROOWWNN’’DD OOFFFF !! Each time Ian Brown wins or has an excellent round, our HC Secretary, quite legitimately, hands out a substantial cut in the hope that Ian can’t possibly keep it up at his age ! How wrong can you be – Ian just keeps on performing – his stamina and attention to detail must be legendary ! Another superb round at North Oxford saw him win with 40 pts. Ian said afterwards, “ Really sorry about winning again – everyone must be really ‘browned-off’ with me.”
However, as Ian’s rivals quite rightly point out, consistency is the key to success and NOBODY has been more consistent than Ian this year – it’s up to everyone else to sort out their game. He has earned his success.
Equalled pleased were Keith Nichols, runner-up with 38pts on his first outing this season, and also Richard Davies ending up 3rd on 37 pts – his second consecutive brilliant round – pity about his two in November (25) & December (22) ! He’s hoping for 3 on the trot at Frilord but doesn’t want to say it aloud.
Dave didn’‛t. Back in the clubhouse, Michael was awaiting excitedly for news from the last 2 groups on his attempted DOUBLE AWARD. Following his tee shot at the first, one could only hope that things would improve – they didn’‛t ! Just the 3 pts on the front 9 – a record one feels. He recovered well on the back 9, almost doubling his score and ended with 8 pts. (This is not the ALL TIME record for the Society, none other than Ricky Cox holds that prestigious award, just 5 pts on some course back in the 90s). So Michael was highly confident of winning both the WOODEN SPOON and WFTTS. When it came to the presentations, he was dumbfounded on hearing of Ricky’‛s effort. But, as one member pointed out, “Never count your chickens . . . . there are some really crap players in this Society !!!”
ALEX STACEY – beat Ricky in the singles. The Shiner came from being hit as Ricky tested the effectiveness of his small wooden spoon – Ricky claimed it was an accident but Alex has informed him that his solicitor will be in touch !
JAMES BAYLISS – beat Ian Breakspear in the singles – didn’‛t play well but Ian had his worst round ever.
LINDSAY TOWNSEND got out his big one and smashed his ball down the middle
to win the Longest Drive – 265 yds.

CAPTAIN’S CORNER . . . ! ANDY’S ANTICS Yet again diligent efforts on our behalf by Dave found an alternative to a waterlogged Lyneham (﴾Wychwood)﴿ which resulted in a good day’s golf at North Oxford golf club. Our thanks again to Dave and, of course, to North Oxford, for accommodating us at such short notice. By the way Dave had form at North Oxford as a previous winner, I'm not sure if he mentioned it to anyone, but any earlier knowledge of the course did not get him into the prizes this time. Top spot and congratulations went to Ian Brown adding further to his tally this season. In horse racing vernacular he is still ahead of the handicapper. The battle for the top spot involved only three players, Keith finishing second (and smiling) and Morph with another good score third. Morph received some consolation in picking up the sweep prize. Only one other person got more than 30 was Mick Nichols, with the rest of us swimming around in the twenties. Looking at the results I've noticed the secret to winning scores is no blobs, simple eh? The wooden spoon was collected again by Michael Hayward, but he does assure me he's enjoying the outings on the golf course. A former collector of several wooden spoons, Matthew, showed what the possibilities are by collecting the nearest the pin prize as well as finishing a creditable fourth. Thanks also to Ian for collating the scorecards and I hope to see you all next month at Frilford.

Dress Code We are a progressive golf club, however it is expected that all members and visitors adhere to our smart casual dress policy. Smart, conventional golfing wear is expected on all courses. Tailored long shorts are permissible with white sport socks or long stockings. Shirts are to be tucked in at all times and caps to be worn peak to the front. Men must not wear collarless shirts or shoes/sandals without socks. Smart, casual golfing apparel in the clubhouse at all times, except in the restaurant where jacket is required after 6:30pm and for Sunday lunch. Shorts are not permitted in the restaurant at any time. Golfing shoes are not permitted in the clubhouse except in the spike bar. NB: WE WILL BE EATING BEFORE 6:30pm so jacket not needed.

Blue Course Frilford's most recent addition, the Blue course, was opened in 1994 to great acclaim. Oxfordshire architect Simon Gidman, whose training in the long-established firm of Hawtree makes him a design descendent of JH Taylor, Frilford's first architect, took 169 acres of adjoining farmland, and sculpted a course every bit the equal of the older tracks.
The new land had fewer natural features than that occupied by the Red and Green, but it still had the precious sandy soil that makes Frilford what Bernard Darwin called 'a wonderful oasis in the sea of mud'. Gidman used this sandy soil to build sweeping features that give the course a more modern feel than Frilford's others, with hollows, swales and depressions adding to the interest.
The layout explores every feature of the site and the par fives and par threes in particular all face different directions and set different tests. There are birdies to be had, even though, at 6,728 yards, the course is a considerable challenge. Equally there are two par fives - and the 600 yard monster that is the seventeenth hole is prime among them - that, without pinpoint accuracy on drive and second shot, a par will be almost impossible.
The Blue's greens are more severely undulating than those of the Red or Green, and thus put a premium on putting. The bunkering too is bold and challenging. A different course it may be, but no-one who plays the Blue at Frilford will feel hard done by.
Club History Golf began at Frilford Heath long before the club was officially formed in 1908. In the final decade of the previous century prominent Abingdon families amused themselves after Sunday lunch with chipping and putting on their lawns. By the turn of the century sufficient interest had been aroused to create an informal club and a rough nine-hole course was laid out onto rented fields. Within a few years the local golfers had moved to a much larger piece of land owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, but the game was not to be properly established in the area until the discovery nearby of a perfect piece of golfing terrain.
Described by the club as "one of those odd stretches of land intended by nature for a golf course, but hitherto unrecognised", it had shallow sandy soil of little agricultural use where gorse and heather were indigenous and where stone and peat had been extracted. It was, in fact, a veritable golfers paradise.
The discovery of this Promised Land and its subsequent development into the original Frilford Heath Golf Course was the work of two men whose professions made them oddly suited to the task. Dr Harry Challenor was a local physician and he was joined in the venture by A.E Preston who was an accountant, barrister and historian. The third member of the group, and undoubtedly indispensable to the project, was T.S Skurray, the head of Morland Brewery. Their enthusiasm for the game of golf and their wide-ranging skills led to the acquisition of nature's natural golf course. The formal inauguration of the Frilford Heath Golf Club was in 1908 and the then three times Open Champion J.H Taylor was commissioned to put the finishing touches to natures design. It was in the following year that Taylor was to win the fourth of his five Open titles.
The company, which still owns and operates the club, was formed in 1912 under the chairmanship of Claude Rippon of the Oxford Times company. During the First World War, older members of the club and the few remaining staff kept the golf club going and membership increased greatly with the vast resurgence of interest in the game when hostilities came to an end. In 1921, a new clubhouse was erected after the previous thatched roof clubhouse was hit by lightening and over the next few years J.H Turner, the club professional, proved himself invaluable in re-designing and improving parts of the original course. But his masterpiece was yet to come - the creation of a new nine-hole course in an area of gorse and heather. He had a real flair for using contours of the ground and he retained all the natural features in a delightful course, which was given pride of place above the 18-hole course by many members and visitors.
After the Second World War the directors of the club realised that the woods of Frilford Heath House Estate, which bordered the course, could possibly be bought for development, thus destroying the peaceful isolation, which was such an attractive part of golf at Frilford. When the estate did eventually come on the market the club quickly stepped in to acquire a further 49 acres and the fine country mansion.
A new nine holes was then designed by C.K Cotton, which, together with J.H Turner's gem, now make up Frilford Heath's second 18-hole course. The country mansion was converted into an extremely attractive and spacious clubhouse in idyllic surroundings. In 1991 the club then acquired a further 169 acres of adjoining farmlands, still part of the "odd stretch of land intended by nature for a golf course" and therefore perfect for another 18 holes. Under the mindful eye of Simon Gidman, course architect, work started on the new 'Blue Course', combining a subtle blend of modern golf architecture with many of the traditional features associated with a heathland course. It is of a modern design and at 6,750 yards provides a serious challenge. The new course opened in 1994 and allows Frilford Heath to join a select and unique group of golf clubs throughout the British Isles to boast 54 holes of championship golf.
The clubhouse has had many modifications over the years, but manages to retain the charm and feel of the old country mansion that it originated from.
