– Featured Artist – Simon Bland 403 and Counting by Gale Waldron Born and raised in the UK, Simon Bland has been drawing and painting since he was a child. But like many budding artists, he followed an academic course of study, eventually leading him to an engi- neering scholarship at Cambridge University. Engineering, however, was not his true calling. After three years of working at Rolls-Royce, he joined Price Waterhouse in London as a management con- sultant developing and implementing IT systems for clients such as Sky Television, BP and Sprint. During an extend- ed assignment in the US, he met his Kate, got married, and took a non- traveling job with a Reston telecom. When the dot com boom came to an end, Simon was 40 years old and wondering what to do next with his life. He had already returned to artwork, taking water- color lessons and drawing and sketching. But now, with even more time on his hands, and with support from Kate, he took the big leap and totally immersed himself in art. Initially, Simon considered a career drawing and painting children, but he quickly discov- ered the animal portrait market is much larg- er and offers more opportunities to the start- ing artist. With some experience drawing and painting his own dogs – Hannah, a yel- low lab and Nikko, a cattle dog – he already had a comfort level with animal portraits. Ten years and 240 commissioned paint- ings later, Simon has painted 403 people, dogs, horses, cats and houses. His portraits begin with a photo shoot in a customer’s home or a place they select, where Simon arranges different poses, backdrops and lighting. He then reviews the photos with his customer. It’s a dynamic – and very enjoy- able – process. “The most important thing about painting any portrait is the client’s experi- ence,” Simon explains. “I try first and foremost to make it an experience that everyone enjoys and feels fully involved in.” As anyone can see from the affec- tionate testimonials on his web- site, he consistently hits the mark. A member of the Sketch Club since 2010, Simon currently serves as Secretary and is an active participant in the outdoor painting sessions. In addition to painting, Simon is a voracious reader who is currently enjoying clas- sic literature. He also finds time for wood- working, fixing his trac- tor and playing guitar. While Simon has found success as a painter, he admits to making a lot of bad starts. “I feel as though I’ve progressed to the point where I actually enjoy scraping it off or tossing it and starting over,” he reflects. “When I first started painting I thought of that as a bad process that needed fixing, but I’ve come to regard it as fundamental to growing and developing something better. Sites for Painting “On Site”I am always looking for tips tomake painting outdoors easier. I go out each time, vowing to doat least one thing better than the last

time. I tell myself I am going to make avalue sketch, pick a good composition, and proceed in an orderly fashion...after15 minutes I usually find myself revertingto old practices. But it is a new year andhope prevails. I decided to focus on astrong value pattern and in the process of

an internetsearch on seeingvalues outdoorswith the brightsun blindingyour eyes, came

upon several interesting artists at Blogspot.com.

Liz Wiltzen, www.lizwiltzen.blogspot.com caught my eye for her

entertaining style and good advice.Plein Air Tips and a Big Fat Challenge focuses on the benefit of beginning your plein air session witha 15 minute value study of the scene.

She advises doing it in paint rather than sketching materials, and using only four values; black, white, and

two mid-tone grays. She feels that thiswill encourage the painter to think about

• How to eliminate detail• Where to link shapes to create an inter-esting pattern of dark and light• Where you can lose edges by bringingvalues close together (to connect shapes)• Where to push values lighter ordarker to strengthen design• What stays and what goes

“5 Keys to Guaranteed Growth as anArtist” offers her thoughts on, amongother things, the benefit of approaching a

class or workshop with a “beginner’smind” so you remain open to newideas and techniques. How many ofus bring our “knowledge” and “expe-rience” to a workshop and forget tolet some new information in?

Another site that looked worthy ofexploration was www.Mchesleyjohnson.blogspot.com. Michael ChesleyJohnson works in pastel and oil, andshares his experiences working out-doors and in the studio.

Simon Bland403 and Counting

by Gale WaldronBorn and raised in the UK, Simon Bland has been

drawing and painting since he was a child. But likemany budding artists, he followed an academiccourse of study, eventually leading him to an engi-neering scholarship at Cambridge University.

Engineering, however, was not his true calling. After three years of working at Rolls-Royce, he joinedPrice Waterhouse in London as a management con-

sultant developingand implementingIT systems forclients such asSky Television,BP and Sprint.During an extend-ed assignment inthe US, he met hisKate, got married, and took a non-traveling job witha Reston telecom.

When the dotcom boom came toan end, Simon was40 years old andwondering what to

do next with his life.He had already returned to artwork, taking water-

color lessons and drawing and sketching. But now, with even more time on his hands, and with support from Kate, he took the bigleap and totally immersed himself in art.Initially, Simon considered a career drawingand painting children, but he quickly discov-ered the animal portrait market is much larg-er and offers more opportunities to the start-ing artist. With some experience drawingand painting his own dogs – Hannah, a yel-low lab and Nikko, a cattle dog – he alreadyhad a comfort level with animal portraits.

Ten years and 240 commissioned paint-ings later, Simon has painted 403 people, dogs, horses, cats and houses. His portraitsbegin with a photo shoot in a customer’shome or a place they select, where Simonarranges different poses, backdrops andlighting. He then reviews the photos with hiscustomer. It’s a dynamic – and very enjoy-

able – process. “The mostimportant thing about paintingany portrait is the client’s experi-ence,” Simon explains. “I tryfirst and foremost to make it anexperience that everyone enjoysand feels fully involved in.” Asanyone can see from the affec-tionate testimonials on his web-site, he consistently hits themark.

A member of the Sketch Clubsince 2010, Simon currently serves as Secretary andis an active participantin the outdoor paintingsessions. In addition topainting, Simon is avoracious reader who iscurrently enjoying clas-sic literature. He alsofinds time for wood-working, fixing his trac-tor and playing guitar.

While Simon hasfound success as apainter, he admits tomaking a lot of badstarts. “I feel as thoughI’ve progressed to thepoint where I actuallyenjoy scraping it off or tossing it and starting over,”he reflects. “When I first started painting I thought of that as a bad process that needed fixing, but I’vecome to regard it as fundamental to growing anddeveloping something better. In a way my artisticprocess has become a sort of metaphor for my life.”
