News – In Brief
£7 Million Expansion Approved
Wehavejustreceivednoticethatourplansforanewteachingblockhavebeenapprovedbythelocalplanningdepartment.Thismeansthatworkwillstartonsitethiscomingsummer.Thedevelopmentisexpectedtotake
around18monthsandwillproduce20newteachingroomstohouseourEnglishandmathematicsclasses.
At a cost of around£7million, the newdevelopmentwill producestate-of-the-art teaching facilities for the
students.Towardstheendoftheproject,therewillalsobesomeinternaladaptationstotheexistingbuildingas
fournewsciencelaboratorieswillbecreatedfromthecurrentEnglishclassrooms.
Themajorbuildingworksshouldnotinterferewiththenormalschoolroutinesastheworkswillbeself-contained
onthesouthernboundaryoftheschoolsite.
Thenewbuildingwillalsoallowtheschooltoexpandbytwoformsofentry,aswelooktohelpaccommodate
theincreaseddemandinHounslowforsecondaryschoolplaces.
Ellis Bloom Offered Place at RADA
WeweredelightedtohearthatYear13’sEllisBloomhasreceivedanoffer
to study a stage management course at the Royal Academy of the
DramaticArt(RADA),oneofthemostprestigiousdramaschoolsinthe
world.ThisfollowshispreviousacceptancetotheLondonAcademyof
MusicandDramaticArt(LAMDA),anotherofthemostrenowneddrama
schoolsinthecountry.Ellisalsohasa finalrecalltoGuildhallSchoolof
MusicandDramainthenextfewmonths.
Ellishashadaninterestinstagemanagementformanyyearsandhas
honedhiscraftinschoolwiththehelpofthedramadepartmentandin
particularMrsDaviesJones,whowasastagemanagerintheWestEnd
fortenyears,workingonshowssuchasMelBrooks’‘TheProducers’.Ellis
hasbeenthestagemanagerforanumberofschoolproductions,including
‘TheGovernmentInspector’(2013),‘GreatExpectations’(2014)and‘It’s
AWonderfulLife!’(2015).
WewishEllisall thebestashepursueshisdreamofworking in the theatre.WehavenodoubtthatEllis’
outstandingworkrate,commitmentanddedicationwillmakehimagreatfitforthiscareer.

Charity Fundraising: Sport Relief
OnFriday18March,theschooltookpartinafundraisingcampaignforSportRelief,
afantasticcharitywhichsaveslivesbothintheUKandabroad.Themaineventwas
aRowathon,organisedby theHouseLeaders.Ittookplaceintheschoolhallfrom
8.45am – 3.00pm,withstudentstakingten-minuteburstsontherowingmachines –
thechallengewastoseewhichhousecouldrowthefurthestoverthecourseofthe
day!Althoughtenminutesdoesn’tsoundlikealongtime,itwasmoredifficultthanit
sounds,buttheboysshowedexcellentresilienceanddeterminationtogetthrough.
Thefullresultsareshownbelow:

2. BRUNEL 67,621mrowed
3. SHACKLETON 67,225mrowed
TheseoutstandingfiguresmeansthateachhouserowedtheequivalentdistanceofDovertoCalaisandback –
aphenomenalachievement.StudentsinYears7-9werealsoallowedtodressinsportskitforthedayfora
minimumdonationof£1.ThefinaltotalraisedbytheschoolforSportReliefisanexcellent£381.95 – thankyou
toeveryonewhotookpart,andtotheHouseLeadersfororganisingtheday.
Outstanding A-Level Drama Results!
TheYear13A-LevelDramaandTheatrestudentsgavetheirfinalpracticalperformanceonWednesday9March,
performing‘LinesCrossed’toapackedaudienceinRoom100.TheplayfocusedonLanceArmstrongandwas
devisedbythestudentsthemselves,usingwitnesstestimonyandothersources.
Itwasanoutstandingproduction,andthestudents’resultswereatestimonytothis– bothEllisBloomandGeorge
Bridgewaterwereawardedanastonishingfullmarks,whileLouisKelly,EmShanahanandJackTakedawere
onlyafewmarksaway.Welldonetoentiregroup – theresultsareatestamenttotheirhardwork!

TheIsleworthCommunityPlayisalocalinitiativenowinitsthirdyear,bringingtogetherstudentsandresidents
fromthelocalcommunityforaseriesofliveperformances.Thisyear’sevent– ‘Isleworth:TheRockandRoll
Years’washostedatIsleworth&Syon,forfourperformancesintheweekof14March.TomKeenan(10F)had
theleadroleintheproduction,whichwassetinthe1950sandfocusedonformerIsleworthresidentVinceTaylor,
thepersonwholinkedIsleworthwiththerockandrollera.
Ittrulywasamagnificentproduction,witheightotherIsleworth&Syonboysperforming:AhmedAbuelmeaza
(11E),MoAbuelmeaza (13ALE),Kendall Berryman (9E), JakeBowden (9E),AadiMudhar (9B),Mubanga
Mulenga(10F),JamesPusey(9E)andRowanThwaites(11F).Welldonetoalloftheboys!

Debate Team Place in London’s Top 30!
Thelastnewsletterdetailedourdebaters’exploitsinRound1oftheUrbanDebateLeague,
wheretheIsleworth&Syonteamswon4outof6debates.Thishalfterm,studentstookpartin
Round2atVilliersSchoolonWednesday2March.Thestudentsexcelledthemselvesonce
again,andhaveofficiallyplacedinthetop40schoolsinthewholecountry!Notonlythat,but
theboysareoneofthetop30schoolsintheLondonarea.
Thisisanexcellentachievement,especiallyconsideringthatmanyofthestudentstakingparthavehadminimal
debatingexperiencebeforethisyear.LedbyMissCox,MissSawbridgeandMissShukla,alongwiththeDebate
Matementors,thesky’sthelimitfortheseoutstandingdebaters!
Challenge Partners Review – Sixth Form
WewelcomedareviewteamfromChallengePartnerstowardstheendofJanuaryforanannual“healthcheck”
onthequalityoftheschool.Thisyear,wefocusedspecificallyontheSixthForm.Ledbyaqualifiedandactive
Ofstedinspector,thereviewteamspenttwodaysinschoollookingatallaspectsofourpost-16provision.
Weareespeciallypleasedthattheteamvalidatedourownjudgementoftheprovision,asbeingareallygood
SixthForm.Manypositiveareaswerehighlightedinthereportalongwithsomesuggestionsforimprovement.

Great West Road Crossing Approved
After many years of lobbyingby the school for a pedestrian crossing on the GreatWest Road, we have

Literacy & Numeracy Evening (Mrs Clayton and Mr Stoddart)

Literacy&NumeracyEveningforthesecondyear.Hostedby
Mrs Clayton (Assistant Headteacher – Literacy) and Mr
Stoddart (Assistant Headteacher – Numeracy), the evening
wasaimedatYear7studentsandparents/carers,givinglots
ofhelpfulguidanceandadviceforhowstudentscandevelop
theirliteracyandnumeracyskills. Ifyouweren’tableto makeit

Brilliant Club – Years 9 & 10
FollowingtheprevioussuccessofourYear7and8cohort,ourGifted&TalentedstudentsinYears
9and10havebeentakingpartintheBrilliantClubschemeduringthishalfterm.Aspartofthe
scheme,aPhDstudentfromaleadingUKuniversityhasdeliveredsixweeksoftutorialstostudents,
withhalfthegroupfocusingonhistoryandtheotherhalfonscience.Studentshaveresponded
reallywelltotheprogramme,completingaKeyStage5-levelessay.They’llgettheirresultsafterEaster,before
headingtotheSOAS,UniversityofLondonfortheirgraduationceremony.Welldonetoalltheboysfortheir
commitmenttothescheme.

OurlibrarianMsSquireshasorganisedanumberofactivitiesforstudentsthishalfterm.
STORYTELLING AT WORPLE
OnFriday26February,agroupofkeenreadersinYears7-9visited
WorplePrimarytoreadsomestoriestotheYear1pupils,aswellas
talking tosomeYear4studentsabouttheir favouritebooks. The
boysandgirlsattheprimaryschoolwereenrapturedastheboys
demonstratedtheirenthusiasmforstories.Theboysdidanexcellent
jobandshouldbe commendedfor showingthecouragetogetupandspeaktothegroup.

renowned writer Anthony McGowan spoke to the
whole of Year 8 on the afternoon of Tuesday 15

become an author,and takingquestions from thestudents.Everyoneseemedtogetalotoutofthe
session,withAnthonyawittyandengagingguest.

WorldBookDaytookplaceonThursday3March,
and a cohort of Year 7 students visited the Paul
Robeson Theatre for a talk with author Caroline
Lawrence. Caroline writes historical fiction for
children,andtalkedaboutherloveofhistory!She
alsodiscussedtheprocessofwriting,breakingdownthenovelinto‘chapteroutlines’togetaclearsense
ofstory.Theboysreallyenjoyedthevisitandwere
gratefultoCarolineforsigningbooksafterwards.

Inspiteoftheshortnatureofthehalfterm,oursportsmenhaveexperiencedsomegreatsuccess.Herearejust

OurYear8IndoorAthleteswontheMiddlesexCountyChampionshipsandwerethereforeselectedto
competeintheLondonYouthGames.ThiscompetitionsawstudentsfromacrossLondoncompetingin
avarietyofevents.Ourboys(picturedbelow)gaveanexcellentshowofthemselves,finishingsixthinthewholeofLondon!
Weweredelightedtohearthatfivestudentsrepresentedthelocalborough,Hounslow,forcricketatthe
LondonYouthGames.ThematchestookplaceatLords,thehomeofEnglishcricket,andtheboysdid
theschoolproudastheyandtherestoftheboroughteamendedupassilvermedallists!Welldoneto:

HarryWilliams(8E)competedintheu-13BadmintonEnglandbronzecircuittournament,whichtook
placeinBirminghamontheweekendof12March.ThiswasthefirsttimethatHarryhascompetedinthis
stage,andheendedupasrunner-up!BadmintoncoachMissGeorgehopesthatHarrycanpushonfrom
thistoevenbiggersuccessinthefuture.
MissGeorge’safter-schoolbadmintonclubcontinuestogofromstrengthto
strength.Thishalfterm,shehostedJustinStone,theMulti-SportsManagerat
Queens’ParkRangersFC,fora“smash-up”session.20studentsinYears7-
11tookpartinthisnewtypeofbadmintontrainingfocusedonmusicandfun!
Itwasanexcellentsessionwhichtheboysthrewthemselvesinto.
Year12Level3BTECSportstudentshavetakentheLevel2StreetGamesaward.Theaimistoallow
studentstogainskillswherebytheycanengageyoungpeopleinaccessingphysicalactivity,particularly
inruralareas.Theboyshavethrownthemselvesintothetaskandhavefounditextremelyrewarding.
AhugewelldoneandthankyoutoHarneetChaggar(13MAS),OmarHabib(12MAS),JamesMcLaughlin
(13MAS),PrinceRadhakrishnan(12MAS)andJamieTilt(12MAS),allofwhomhaveassistedthePE
departmentthishalfterm.Theboyshavedemonstratedoutstandinglevelsofcommitmentinhelpingto
coachsomeofthelowerschoolsportsteams – it’sbeengreattoseethemshowingleadershipskills!
AllSixthFormstudentsaregiven thechanceto take theHigherSportsLeadercourse,anationally-
recognisedLevel3qualificationrunbySportsLeadersUK.14ofourcurrentYear12and13cohort
organisedaSportReliefFUNdamentalfestivalatMarjoryKinnonSchoolonWednesday16March.All
96 students at Marjory Kinnon took part, and students and staff alike were overwhelmedwith the
professionalismdisplayedbythestudents,whoplanned,deliveredandevaluatedaseriesofsportingactivities(asshownbythephotographsbelow).Welldonetothestudentsinvolved!

Oneoftheschool’sacademicprioritiesfor2015-16isIndependentLearning,encouragingstudentstogobeyond
theirclassroomstudiesthroughHomeLearningandotherindependenttasks.Wefeelthatitisimportantfor
parents/carerstobeawareoftheworkbeingsetforyourchildren;tothatend,weaskedeachcurriculumarea
toproduceKeyStage3(Year7-9)HomeLearningSheetsforeachofthesixhalftermsthisyear.
Thesesheetshavebeensteadilypostedtothesubjectpagesonthewebsite;thiswillcontinuefortherestofthe
year.Thesheetsgiveageneralideaastowhatworkyourson/wardshouldbecompletingathomeeachweek

Appearance Policy – Holiday Reminders
Please remember the requirements of the schoolwith regards toappearance, in particular tohair.This is
especiallypertinentovertheholidayperiod,whenstudentscanbetemptedtogoforastylethatdoesnotconform
to school requirements. Our policy is clear with regard to hair, and all of our students are aware of the
requirementsthroughrepeatedremindersinassembliesandintutortime.TheextractfromourAppearance
Policyisincludedbelowasareminder:
Hairshouldbeconventionalinstyleandinlength(abovethecollarandnoshorterthanablade2)and
shouldnotbeartificiallycoloured,“spiked”orcontainstyli ngproducts.Excessivelyshavenhair(belowa
blade2/whereskinonheadisvisible),shavedeyebrowsoranyshavenstep/lines/patterns/fashiontrims
arenotacceptable.

Basic Equipment – ‘No Excuses’
Itisasimpleandclearexpectationthatstudentsbring“basic”schoolequipmenttoschoolonadailybasis,thus
enablingthemtobeready for learning.Equipmentincludespens,pencil,ruler,ascientificcalculator,specialist
mathematicsequipmentandawaterbottle.Alloftheseitemsshouldbeorganisedwithinasuitably-sizedschool
bag,whichshouldalsocontainareadingbook.Pleaseensurethatyourson/wardorganiseshisschoolbagthe
eveningbeforeaschooldayandisthereforeready to learn.Thereare‘noexcuses’ forstudentsnotbeing
preparedforschool.
Independent Learning
Animportantwholeschoolobjectivefor2015-2016isforstudentstodisplaygreaterindependentlearning.The
misconceptionistothinkthatthisissolelyabouthomework.Infact,parents/carerscanhelptheschoolpromote
independentlearningbyencouragingtheirson/wardto:
1. Makedecisions(acceptthateffortisrequiredinordertobesuccessful;self-checktheirwork,accept
advicewithout perceiving it as criticism and workwithout always seeking approval; respond to the
teacher’swrittenfeedback)
2. Learnhowtothink(questiontheteacherabouttopicsaswellastheirpeers,takeriskswiththeirlearning,
useinitiative,beopen-mindedandoffersolutions,re-visitactivitiesortopicswithoutpressure)
3.
Workinasystematicandorganisedmanner(theypossessschoolbasicequipment;theyareresourceful
andmanagetheirtimeeffectively)
4. Readfor20minuteseveryevening.
Key Stage 3 Homework Pilot
TheKS3homeworkpilotisbeingextendeduntiltheremainderoftheschoolyear.Evidenceshowsthatthe
regularandeffectivecompletionofhomeworkcontributestoanadditionalsixmonthsofstudentprogressevery
year.Giventhis,studentsinYears7-9willcontinuetoberewardedwithHomeworkPositiveseverytimeahome-
learningactivityissubmittedwhichisofan"acceptablequality".
An "acceptablequality" relatestobothcontentandpresentation,andis solelyat thediscretionof theclass
teacher.StudentswhoproduceoutstandingpiecesofhomeworkwillreceiveHomeworkCommendations.Many
oftheseoutstandingpiecescanbeviewedonTwittermarkedwiththehashtag#IsleworthHomework.
Pleasecontinuetocheckthestudydiaryofyourson/wardfortheirhome-learningactivities;thesearealsoposted
ontheschoolwebsite.Detentionsforfailingtosubmithomeworkhavebeenphasedout;instead,parents/carers
willbecontactedbyletterwhenstudentsregularlyfailtosubmitwork.

Car Parking – Before and After School
Wewouldbegratefulifparents/carerswouldcarefullyconsiderwhetherornottheirchildrenrequirepickingup
fromschooleachday.Theroadsaroundschoolcangetcongested;droppingofforcollectingstudents,ateither
endoftheday,doesaddtothiscongestion.Itcanbefrustratingforourneighbourstocopewiththeaddedtraffic
andsometimesthewaycarsareparkedisillegal.Thezig-zaglinesoutsidetheschoolgatesareinplaceforthe
safetyofourstudents,anddoubleyellowlinesalsoexisttoensurebettertrafficflow.TheLocalAuthorityhasan
EnforcementOfficerwhoattendstheschooltoissuefixed-penaltieswhererequired,andthishasourfullsupport.
Inaddition,parents/carersmustnotdriveontotheschoolgroundstopickuptheirchildren,unlessthereare
exceptionalcircumstances.Walkingorcyclingtoschoolisafarhealthieroptionforyourchildren,sopleasegive
thisoptionseriousconsideration.
Healthy Behaviours
SAFE CYCLING
Asmallnumberofboyshaverequireda reminder
aboutsafecycling,especiallyonthewayhomefrom
schoolintheafternoon.Allstudentsshouldhavea
cycle helmet aspartof theircyclewearand they
must also ensure that some care is taken when
cyclingdownthehilltotheLondonRoad.Again,we
would ask you to discuss these matters if your
son/ward cycles to school. Thank you for your
support.
FIZZY DRINKS
We ask all parents/carers to ensure that packed
lunchesdonotincludefizzydrinks.Suchdrinksare
notallowedontheschoolsite.Inadditionwehave
noticedsomeboyspurchasingunhealthydrinksand
snacks (including packets of biscuits and large
packsofcrisps)onthewaytoschool.Wewouldask
youtodiscussthiswithyourson/wardinanattempt
topreventsuchunhealthybehaviour.
