ANNUAL PICNIC

Thank goodness the sun shone on the righteous for our picnic this year, which was very well attended, and thoroughly enjoyed by all the participants in the various activities, particularly those that won the ginormous prizes on offer. Highlights of the day were the epic train journey by “George” through the Burbage Rain Forest; the first ever public performance by the “Lutterworth African Drum Circle”, and lastly, our very own brilliant Line Dancing troupe, who have all been signed up for Strictly!! These events don't just happen, and its success is down to the “behind the scenes” efforts by so many people who deserve a very big THANK YOU. Last but by no means least, another very big THANK YOU to David and Liz White for providing such a wonderful venue. Ken Patton

ANNUAL WALKING QUIZ

Well it's finally over and our trials and tribulations are now behind us. We had to endure a change of location after unforeseen circumstances but everything came to fruition in the end. We did enjoy re-planning to make it a wonderful evening of fun and laughter and eating. In the end 7 teams set off in and around North Kilworth (once the teams had deciphered the clues of where to start from) and afterwards at Lutterworth Golf Club for dinner and prize giving. It was finally won by The Cluedoes (Linda and Ken Patton, Lynne Grindlay, Carole Harrington, and Theresa Phillips and ably support by Harvey) with 49 points. Joint runners up, with 48 points were The Random Hatters (Brian Fowlers family team) and The Searchers (Sandra and Richard Whittington, Brenda and Mick Burrows and Helen and Tim Hurst) but based on time the Random Hatters came second. We then had a rather comical situation of picking a team to organise next year’s Walking Quiz. One person had stated she didn't want to win the chance of organising next year’s event, so we had to initially persuade her to enter the quiz. We gave her the opportunity of doing the draw and guess what? she picked her own team, well done Brenda (The Searchers). Many thanks to my team for their support in organising this year’s event, My wife Barbara and Colin and Shirley Tegg. Roy Maiden

A thoroughly good time was had by all who undertook the Annual Walking Treasure Hunt challenge this year and for this we must thank the team of Barbara and Roy Maiden and Shirley and Colin Tegg. Despite Roy's worry that it was bound to rain, we had the perfect evening weather-wise. We started at North Kilworth Village Hall car park and had to unscramble anagrams to find in which area the clues were to be found. It was clear that the team had put a great deal of time and effort into both researching the area, the questions and into providing us with a map. The meal at Lutterworth Golf Club was also well-received after our exertions. A great big thank you to all concerned for a most successful evening. After the prize-giving, Brenda Barrows was asked to pick out the name of the team tasked with arranging next year's event and she was dismayed when she pulled out her team's name. Ken

AUTUMN SOCIAL EVENT

BRIAN FOWLER

Members of Lutterworth U3a know that I have embarked on a number of treks in recent years with the ascent of Mount Meru in Tanzania as a test climb at altitude in 2018. Having emerged unscathed, I then set my sights on climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the World and if all goes well I will be on my way down as members meet for the October Wycliffe Rooms meeting. The summit, at just under 6000 metres, requires several days of uphill walking into ever decreasing oxygenated air. Overnight stops involve a tent, a sleeping bag and a volcanic rock floor. Water has to be carried as does enough food for 7 days so I am not in any way thinking this will be a ‘walk in the park’…. There are lots of reasons not to do it but some that will make it worthwhile, not least of which is my ambition to raise sponsorship for Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People and for an amazing home for rescued street children in Moshi, Tanzania. If you wish to sponsor my madness it will be appreciated. Details available on flyers at the September & October general meeting or e mail [email protected] Brian

I look forward to sharing more music tea and biscuits and maybe some anecdotes too. We have room for a couple more members if you would like to join this relaxed, friendly group. Nohline NEW AGE KURLING GROUP Coordinators Roy and Barbara Maiden Tel: 550058 Another month of Kurling goes by with both good and poor support. The first session had a super turn out with 18 players and was won by Mike Harrison from Lynne Grindlay. Unfortunately the second session suffered from the bank holiday and we only had 8 Kurlers and this proved to be a Reaves family benefit (although Peter won on aggregate, the playoff final was won by Pauline, which she was ecstatic about----well done Pauline). Our next month’s sessions are on the 11th and 25th of September at our usual venue (Ullesthorpe Village Hall @ 2.00pm until 4.00pm) hope to see you there. Roy and Barbara READING GROUP Co-ordinator: Linda Patton Tel: 556996 Golf A light-hearted summer holiday easy read was chosen for our discussion this month: Celia Imre's "Not Quite Nice". Although most enjoyed it for what it was, a novel written tongue-in-cheek describing a group of expats living in Bellevue-Sur-Mer near Nice, others felt that it was too cliched as it included almost every type of dysfunctional character; bullied parents, con men, drug dealers/addicts, gambling addicts, gullible women, trans-sexuals to name but a few. Although no-one said that they would choose to read another of her novels, some thought her autobiography may be of interest. Our October choice is Sally Rooney's "Normal People". We read a very varied selection of books and if you want to spend an enjoyable morning with a lovely group exchanging your views on our book choices, please do come and join us. Linda

WHIST GROUP Co-ordinator: Glenys Peverley Tel: 553614 After our summer break, we met again in September. Our next session is on Thursday, October 3rd at 7:00pm in Bitteswell village hall. We would be happy for new members to join us, as “the more the merrier”. Please contact me if you are interested. Glenys QUIZ GROUP Co-ordinator Sue Jones Tel: 556192 Marilyn hosted our August quiz afternoon. The rounds covered music, animals, words beginning with Q and many other diverse subjects. I particularly enjoyed the picture round of food containing a place name in UK. She had also baked us some lovely cakes. Thank you Marilyn. Quiz Group Diary Sept 12th Quiz afternoon hosted by Gordon, 34 Macaulay Road, tel. 556192 Oct 10th Quiz afternoon hosted by Geoff, 7 Leire Lane, Ashby Parva, tel. 209084 We are a group who enjoy giving our brains some exercise in enjoyable and friendly competition. Members take turns to host the quiz afternoon in their homes. We do have room for a couple more members, please contact me if you would like to join us. We welcome anyone to join us when attending pub or charity quiz evenings and if you would like me to keep you informed of these events let me know. Sue Jones HISTORY GROUP Co-ordinator: Linda Patton Tel:- 556996 Lynne will be running the next History Group meeting in Bitteswell Village Hall on Monday September 23rd at 2.15 pm. We will be continuing with Henry VIII as there is so much to talk about regarding his reign. We haven't finished discussing his wives but there is also the dissolution of the monasteries, his navy, especially the Mary Rose, his ministers, Thomas More and Thomas Wolsey, his prowess at sports etc. We will have had our day out in Lincoln which replaced our August meeting and hopefully, this will have been a success. Even if you have not attended any of

this group's meetings before, I am sure that this will be an exceptionally interesting one and I am sorry that I shall be missing it. Do come along whether you wish to undertake any research yourself or simply to hear what others have discovered. Linda PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP Co-ordinator: Alan Shean Tel 283512 Abbey Park in Leicester provided many photographic opportunities for our August meeting. As well as the magnificent trees and colourful flowers, the river bridge and its surroundings were highly photogenic. Following days of significant rainfall, the weir was fast flowing which enabled us to create different impressions of the water by adjusting shutter speeds. The statue of Cardinal Wolsey, not a flattering representation many think, was also an obvious target for the lens. On October 4th we will be joining the Garden Visit to Lamport Hall. Alan Shean HANDICRAFTS GROUP Co-ordinator Glenys Peverley Tel: 553614 We will next meet on Monday, September 16th at Pat's home in Holly Drive, Lutterworth at 200pm. The weather behaved and the gardens were really lovely. There were several plants we had not seen anywhere else and many of us brought home something to plant and remind us of our day out. It is a shame that they are not nearer as they hold several special events there with guest speakers. The lunch was good with some of the cakes having been baked by the owner who had designed the garden: Is there no end to her talents? BUFFET SUPPER GROUPS Co-ordinator: Gwenda Jones Tel: 556923 We had a very summery evening held at Brenda and Mick’s home. The conversation included some famous and diverse names, Harry Maguire, Frank Spencer, Grace Darling, Enid Blyton and, of course, Donald Trump. John MUSIC FOR FUN - SONGSTERS GROUP Bill Tomkins Tel: 01455 552864/07913 386476 [email protected] After a longer break than in previous years due to the fact that we weren’t invited to sing at the summer picnic, we shall have had the first session of the new ‘season’ on 2 September. Sessions will continue each first and third Monday morning until the beginning of December. During the coming weeks we shall try to get Guys and Dolls fully up to scratch; we have worked on some of the sections in our medley during the 2018/19 season but there is still quite a lot to be done to get the whole thing in a fit state to inflict it on others! At our final session for the last season we started work on’ We Said we Wouldn’t Look Back’, a lovely song from Salad Days. We shall continue with this and also another from the same show. Julian Slade, who composed the score, had a rare gift for composing beautiful and memorable melodies which almost sing themselves. This alone might well tempt you to come and join the Songsters!! We shall have started work on several other new songs from different shows, including from Fiddler on the Roof. There is another new development under way, which uses a different approach to learning songs from the traditional one which has been used by Terry and myself for almost everything the songsters have learnt previously. If you want to know more about this, you’ll have to ask one of the existing Songsters or – much better – come along to the next session and find out for real! There is always plenty of room for newcomers because there is a lot of space in St Mary’s Church in Bitteswell. The dates for the next few sessions are 16 September, 7 and 21 October. We start promptly at 10.15 and finish sometime between noon and 12.15. Subscriptions are £1 per session, which

We especially arranged to have our picnic lunch at a seat/bench, which had recently been installed in memory of Ron Boot, who had been a very keen member of the birdwatching group. Derek

Our trip out this month was a little different. We went to Fosse Meadows. After a walk round and coffee in the hide, Pat joined us and we went round the woods and meadow to sit and eat our picnic on Ron’s seat. It was a lovely sunny spot and we talked about all the times Ron had joined us and what a great friend he had been to us all. We all miss him. Thanks Pat. We did see almost 30 species of birds but that was just a bonus after a great time out. We will go out again on September 27th. Usual packup. Meet at the Rec Car Park at 09.30, deciding on the day where to go. Either Burbage Woods or Brandon Marsh. By that date summer birds will have left and autumn migration will have started. LIVELY DISCUSSION GROUP Co-ordinators: Dianne and Brian Thorp Tel: 01455 209584 The August meeting of The Lively Discussion Group took on the global problem of de-forestation as the topic. Vast swathes of trees have vanished from the UK countryside over the last 80 years, swept away in favour of housing, roads, factories, storage units and airports. In Brazil, Indonesia Colombia and The Africas huge forests are blitzed on a daily basis. Climate change is becoming more and more a global worry and it is clear that wiping out forests that contribute to the conversion of carbon into oxygen through photosynthesis is a very major factor in changing weather conditions. When forests are cut back or burned enormous volumes of smoke emissions add to the problem. The cleared ground is

Page 10: NEWSLETTER - u3asites.org.ukemerged unscathed, I then set my sights on climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the World and if all goes well I will be on

converted to growing palm oil, which is also now recognised as a problem in the human diet. The group concluded that it is only through global agreement to scale back enormously on de-forestation that an acceptable situation can be reached otherwise in the wise words of Frazer from Dad’s Army, “We are all doomed”. The Group will meet again on Thursday September 19th, when the topic under discussion at the home of Theresa Phiilips will be “Space Exploration, is the vast expenditure justified?” This far reaching topic should exercise the minds of group members and they will no doubt go to the end of the Earth to research material. The group would welcome some new members so if you are interested have a chat with Linda Patton Groups co-ordinator or Dianne Thorp - Group leader Brian Fowler 1st WEDNESDAY WALKING GROUP Joint Co-ordinators:-Peter and Irene Moore. Lunch Arrangements: Not strictly a pub walk but if you would like to eat at the pub, orders will be taken at 10 am and there will be access to the toilets. Light meals are £7.50 and there is a main menu with choices at £10+. AUGUST (Long) WALK. Although travelling in 4 cars, the 10 walkers arrived at Grafham Water within a few minutes of each other. After taking advantage of the “facilities”, we ensured we were fully kitted up ready for the 11.8 mile walk, and set off along field paths to Kimbolton. In the grounds of Kimbolton School, we stopped for our short coffee break before heading off for the next section of the walk. It was a warm day, and we found a nice shaded spot for lunch on the edge of a forest. After what seemed like a very short break, we were off again, back to Kimbolton, where there was, strategically placed, a pub and a café. The ladies chose the tea room for a cup of tea and slice of cake, whilst the men headed to the pub garden to share the afternoon sun with the wasps. Both teams seemed to sense the need to crack on, and emerged from their respective hostelries at the same time. It just left the final 2.5 miles back to the car park. An enjoyable day and, with no stiles, a very nice walk. Those scheduled to do the 16.5 mile charity walk in September having a warm feeling that they could probably do another 5 miles. Many thanks to George for organising such a pleasant walk on a lovely day. For the third month in a row we matched that total. Tony Allen and Paul Butler, having had various problems with planning the walk, elected to repeat March’s walk in reverse. I hoped that this meant we were going to do the walk in the opposite direction and not have to walk it backwards. My fears were allayed as we set off walking from the Dog and Gun at Kilby in a forward direction, but in the reverse direction! Fortunately, the hot weather we had enjoyed

over the Bank holiday had cooled down and with a bit of a breeze it was very pleasant. This walk was particularly enjoyable, first across fields and then a pathway to reach the Grand Union Canal. We then walked along the towpath, passing Newton Harcourt, to eventually leave it to reach St Wistan`s Church, where we stopped for a break. The return journey, passing through the Rural Centre at Wistow was mostly tracks and meadow fields and because we were going in the opposite (or reverse?) direction we had some fine distant views (which we had missed when walking the other way). A very good rural walk that I would be happy to do again (in the same direction). Next Walk: - Wednesday 25th September 2019 Walk Organiser:- Rawdon Bottom Tel: 07596 079661 Meeting Point and Time:- Coventry Road Recreation Ground at 9.20am to leave at 9.30am Start Point and Time: The White Horse, 32 Station Road, Broughton Astley, LE9 6PT. Toilets will be available Walk starts at 10.00 am. Directions to the Start:-. Take A426 towards Leicester and at Dunton Bassett traffic lights turn left onto Coopers Lane, B581. At the first set of traffic lights in Broughton Astley turn left onto Station Road. The White Horse, which has a large car park, is on the left. Return mileage 13 miles. Walk Route and Distance:-. This walk starts off with a little tour of Broughton Astley passing along Station Road, where there are some of the larger mature houses in the village, before heading off towards Dunton Basset across Clump Hill. If you remember to look behind you there will be a broad vista across Leicester and beyond. Not quite reaching Dunton Basset we will turn to go to Stemborough Mill and then onto Leire. We will take a break in the churchyard before making our way back via Back Lane to Broughton Astley The distance is approximately 5.3 miles, comprising fields, tracks, country lanes and some short road sections with footpaths. There are 5 stiles. The walk should take about 2.5 hours including a break. Lunch Arrangements:- Pre-order food. The “Let’s do lunch” menu is £5.35 for 2 Courses or choose from the main menu where Light Bites are £4.85. Peter Creeden
