Next Meeting—Feb 2, 2017—Washoe Zephyr Gardens—11 AM

Happy New Year Everyone:

Sorry about our last meeting cancellation, the weather has been providing lots of challenges for every-

one. Missing the January meeting has set our programs back a bit—the Materials Sale will be moved to the March meeting at the 1st Congregational Church.

Our program for the February meeting will begin with a presentation by Cat Wahrenbrock, “Introduction to Basket Making Materials and Tools.” Then we will begin Part 1 of our three part series to construct a basket. We will make a round reed base, which then will be bi-spoked at the March meeting. There will be a variety of examples, which people may want to try. Materials for the base will be provided, but bring your weaving tools and if you have any extra materials around, please feel free to bring. This seg-ment of the program will be a good time to share experience and knowledge. It should be a fun weaving time for all, newbies and experienced members. We can always learn something new, I know I can and have.

See you in February,

Happy Almost Groundhog Day

Hopefully when Punxsutawney Phil comes out of his den he will have a day like we have been lately and will not see his shadow. Boy, this weather has been crazy and I hope all of you have stayed warm and dry. How bizarre is 6 inches of snow, followed by almost 3 inches of rain fol-lowed by wind then another 4 inches of snow. The good thing about the weather is it is too yucky to go outside, unless you ski or snowshoe, so it is good basket weaving weather. The older I get the more I appreciate the “snow birds.”

I am excited to talk about the willow tunnel project at Idlewild Park in Reno. Sandy Zoerner met with Lindsey and they want to set up another work day. The willow last summer had done very well with the wet winter we had last year so I suspect this year it will do even better. A work date will be set for February or March; we will have more information at a later date.

I would like your input on situations like we had for last Thursday’s meeting. I know we don’t have an official “snow day” policy but thought we had agreed if it was a snow day for the school district it was a snow day for us, however, school was not back in session. Just wondering how you all feel about traveling when the weather is like it was. Please provide any feedback back to me at [email protected]. Thank you, I appreciate your input.

I feel so out of touch lately, I missed the last 2 meetings then cancelled Thursday’s meeting, I miss the energy I get from our meeting. Be safe and stay warm.

Bonnie

SAVE THE DATE

The Nevada Gourd Society (NGS) is sponsoring the Silver State Art Festival in Carson

City, Nevada on September 23 and 24, 2017. The NGS is inviting gourd artists, basket makers, and wood turners to rent a 10 x 10 space for the weekend for only $100 (that's only $50 per day). Suppliers: $150. The festival is going to be held in Fuji Hall in Carson City. So this indoor event will not require any canopies. We are also looking for teachers for classes to be held on Friday, September 22 in Fuji Park. We would love all of the wonderful basket makers to rent a space and share their art. If you think you might be interested in participating, please send us an email at [email protected] or call Kristy Dial 619-995-2475. The festival pages on our website will be up in the next couple of weeks. www.nevadagourdsociety.org

Round Reed Double Walled Basket February 16, 2017

1st Congregational Church

9:30—3:30

Join Karen Olson in making a double walled basket with #2 round reed. Emphasis will be on the shaping, while practicing twining and three rod wale. I’ve made several of these baskets recently and no two are shaped the same. Trying for a more angular basket. If you have any dyed #2 reed for accent, please bring. My example is mostly smoked reed, measures approx 6” tall by 6” across at the top. Supplies: small awl, small sponge or spray bottle, scissors, tape measure. Material Fees: $10 Class Fee: $25 member/$30 nonmember Bring your lunch!!!!! Info: email [email protected] Sign-ups at the February meeting.

Special Workshops 2017 with Jill Robinson Let's make this work!

I'm trying to make the workshops with Jill Robinson work but I need your help. I have been in contact with Jill several times recently. She has advised me that she really needs to teach 3 classes with 10 stu-dents in each, to make it feasible to come to Reno. As of today the status of the 3 classes that had the most interest are; Candidum 8 people, Sugar Plum 8 people, and Landscape 4 people. As you can see we are 10 people short of her requirement. Jill has offered two other choices of baskets she could teach in place of Landscape in case that may spark more interest. February is suppose to be the deadline for de-posit. Since she has given us this opportunity to get our needed commitment that deadline will now be March. I will not collect any deposits unless we meet the needed requirement. I had an email sent to all members of the two new choices with pictures and descriptions. I will have that information at the meet-ing as well. Please don't wait to sign up if your interested in these new choices. The dates of the workshops remain the same July 14-16. If you have questions or want to sign up please email me at [email protected]. My phone is 775-338-7910.

This is the exhibit currently located at South Valley Library on Wedge Parkway in South Reno. Since we did not meet in January, several members con-tributed to this exhibit. The exhibit will be up through February. We thought it would be fun to switch out some of the baskets for heart shaped ones to be displayed during the month of February.
