SUCCESS BEGINS CLOSE TO HOMEMeet Celina Garza, STING Instructor and Development Research Associate for the Division

August 2009 after working over 12 years writing and administering state and federal grants in various professional capacities with the public and private sector. Celina took an interest in serving as a STING instructor as a means to gain a hands-on perspec-tive about the challenges developmental students face in earning their degree.

“Researching and writing about something and ac-tually seeing and experiencing it for yourself are two extremes of the learning process. I wanted to learn more about the student experience beyond what

I read and write about with grants. Being a STING instructor has given me a unique opportunity to en-gage directly with students and to learn more about their ideas and challenges in school. These lessons

grants, but have also given me great personal satis-

on helping students who face tremendous obstacles succeed and ultimately earn their degree.”

Celina earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Mary’s University and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree at UTB/TSC in Guidance and Counseling. She and her husband, Eladio Garza, live in Harlingen and are the proud parents of three daughters.

STUDENT AFFAIRS ... FUTURE SCORPIONS WALLPlease join us in creating a “Student Affairs ... Future Scorpions” wall in our VPSA conference room. We plan to fill a wall with the faces of “Future Scorpions.” This wall will be created to remind us how valuable our work is and that everyone deserves the opportunity to become a Scorpion!

You will need to provide us with a framed photo of your “Future Scorpion” and an explanation of who he or she is. This might be a young family member, loved one or friend that aspires to be a “Future Scorpion.”

For more information, contact Debbie Medina at [email protected] or (956) 882-5135.
