Do You Have Old Pre-School Puzzles and Educational Toys taking up cupboard space at your house?

The junior students at Bass Coast Specialist School would

appreciate your help in building up our resources. We are in

need of solid complete puzzles and any educational or

imaginative toys which are in good working order, for our

younger students to develop their pre-literacy and early

numeracy skills.

If you can help please box up your old toys and bring them to

the school office to be collected by staff from Bass Coast

Specialist School.

With a huge thanks from your little friends at B.C.S.S.

From The Principal’s Office of the 4 B’s in all aspects of school life and willingly accept the responsibilities of being a school leader. Parent Opinion Survey 44 randomly selected families will be invited to respond to this year’s Parent Opinion Survey. Schools are expected to return all surveys to the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. It would be great to have 100% participation for 2013. If your family receives a survey please help us by sending completed surveys to school by Friday August 2nd. National Tree Planting Day- This Friday Did you know that this is a great time of year to plant native shrubs/trees? It is time to rejuvenate our environment and plant out native trees and shrubs that will attract birdlife, solve some drainage problems at the bottom of the oval as well as further enhance our surroundings. All students in Mrs Collins and Miss Henzen’s classes as well as students who are new to our school will have the opportunity to plant out a tree or shrub on Friday. Parents who are interested in coming along to support this project are very welcome to come along between 10.15am and 1.00 on Friday to lend these young gardeners a hand. Chaplaincy Program Each year School Council seeks feedback from the school community on our Chaplaincy Program. This is a requirement to ensure that we can apply for funding from the Federal Government. Please take the time to fill in and return the survey attached to last week’s newsletter. If anyone has any questions around how Chaplaincy in our school operates please catch up with your child’s class teacher or myself. Wendy, our school chaplain will be away until the end of August. Special Visitor- Private Chris Mooney What a delight to meet Private Mooney last Friday before he went into the classroom to talk with the students from 1/2A and 2/3A. Chris was a student at Drouin West many years ago and is now in training to be a Chef in the army. Students enjoyed the opportunity to ask questions and find out about the many different careers available through the army.

Drouin West will be celebrating National Literacy and Numeracy Week with our school families next week on Wednesday July 31. All school families as well as our new prospective families have been invited to join us on a Family Maths Night starting at 7.00pm and finishing at 8.00pm. Family Maths Night provides an opportunity for families to experience a variety of “hands on” math activiites and games, many of which can be played at home. Great family prizes will be drawn on the night for some lucky families who experience different activities in at least three classrooms and have their passports stamped. Let’s Celebrate! Positive Behaviour Support News 88.4% of students at D.W.P.S. consistently followed the 4 B’s for the month of June. This shows continued improvement with the data and is an outstanding result for the last four weeks of term 2.

Teachers are always excited about the improvements that this creates for learning. As a reward, these children will be able to have a 10 minute extension at playtime this week with all staff joining students in the playground for games and activities. Students who have shown improvements towards their personal behavioural goals will also be acknowledged and encouraged to aim for this bonus playtime for the month of July. 100 Days of school On Tuesday we celebrated 100 days of school. Students spent the day investigating what “100” means. It was lovely to see the collections of 100 things brought to school and find out the time it takes to do different things 100 times. It is amazing to think we have had 100 out of 200 school days already this year! Student Leaders Congratulations to our new Student Leaders: Sarah Conlin, Shelby Van Riet and Corey Taylor who were presented with their jackets, badges and certificates at assembly on Friday. These students continue to demonstrate the expectations

Science News This term all grades are learning about physical science. Grades Prep, Prep/1, 1/2, 2/3 and 3/4 have a homework task to

complete this week.

Grades Prep, Prep/1, 1/2 are learning about light and sound. This week we

walked around the school listening to all the sounds and then drew about what

we heard and sorted the sounds in various way.

Grades 2/3 and 3/4 are learning about heat. This week we looked at items that

produce heat and items which are heated by something else.

Grades 4/5 and 5/6 are

learning about light. This week we went into a dark room. Can you see if

there is no light? Why? In coming weeks we will be learning about how

we see different colours, how far light travels, what direction light

travels and other things to do with how we see.

If parents have any objects which we can display in the science room to

do with sound, light or heat could they please send them to school.

Thank you for your support.
