Newsletter December 2014 Year three (3) and we have 145 members and counting. We were receiving requests for applications by Husky personnel just about to retire and were already signing up for membership in the Husky Retirement Club – some joining the Club during the Husky Christmas party – who can beat that!!! Word of mouth and membership drives are certainly very powerful indeed!!! The newest members to join the Club are: Audrey and Gerald Hawthorne Vi and Murray Feddema Merril and Joy Humphrey Peter and Jean Pilch Linda Dick Joan and Ed Lee Dabir and Kiran Naqvi (Lloydminster) George and Olga Klesken Marika Vetian Deanne and Ted Psiurski Dennis and Linda Shantz Janette Wood Wanda Nyysola Mike and Jane Isakeit Ian Cathery Jim and Shirley Malvin Elaine and John Crocker Peter and Monica Diaconescu Sylvio Yan and Angela Kwon Cameron and Terry O’Rourke Sandy McDonald During these last three (3) years, we covered a lot of ground with countless activities wherein most of you participated and wherein the Club has received many “thank yous” for. This retirement club has a purpose “ to continue enjoying the camaraderie of our peers and continued socializing, to stay connected and give our lives a purpose of being”. The Club’s Executive will be meeting soon to prepare the budget and line up possible activities for the coming year. But before you settle down to reminisce on the events of the year, here is a very important reminder - financial assistance from Husky Energy depends on paid memberships, so it would be nice if we could keep our membership dues up to date.. Your Executive Officers remain the same with the exception of Bev Rumsey who stepped down from the Membership Coordinator. In her place, George Klesken, a new retiree graciously stepped up to the plate and assumed the Membership Coordinator position. Thank you George and welcome! Membership fees are due June 30 of each year: $10.00 per person or $20.00 per couple

During these last three (3) years, we covered a lot of ground with countless activities wherein
most of you participated and wherein the Club has received many “thank yous” for. This
retirement club has a purpose “ to continue enjoying the camaraderie of our peers and continued
socializing, to stay connected and give our lives a purpose of being”.
The Club’s Executive will be meeting soon to prepare the budget and line up possible activities
for the coming year. But before you settle down to reminisce on the events of the year, here is
a very important reminder - financial assistance from Husky Energy depends on paid
memberships, so it would be nice if we could keep our membership dues up to date..
Your Executive Officers remain the same with the
exception of Bev Rumsey who stepped down from the
Membership Coordinator. In her place, George
Klesken, a new retiree graciously stepped up to the
plate and assumed the Membership Coordinator
position. Thank you George and welcome!
Membership fees are due June 30 of each year:
$10.00 per person or $20.00 per couple

Calgary Poppy Fund and Veterans Food
Bank. We raised $8,298.20. (Each year
we raise an amount larger than the previous
year which makes this Food Drive so
worthwhile). As the need continues to
rise, we hope to continue this worthwhile
endeavor in service of the Veteran's and
their families. With each food drive the
donations have been more than generous,
and we hope to reach bigger targets to
give back even more - lest we forget.

after a hearty breakfast. A
stranger in their midst?
We have an Olympian in our midst in the person of
Philip de Souza . He represented Kenya in 1972 in Field
Hockey at the Olympics in Munich, Germany and were
considered to be the favourites to win gold. But seven
of their good players were injured before the
tournament started and were unable to participate in
the actual tournament. Three top teams in the past-
Germany, Pakistan and India somehow heard that the
Kenya team was a strong team and so they decided to
make a trip to Kenya three months before the Olympics.
Kenya officials agreed and they played a best of five
games each and won between three and four games..
German papers rated Kenya Team No. 1 and other teams
played them. This was also the year that was horrified
with the death of Israeili athletes in the hands of a
Palestinian group called “Black September”. The dead
athletes were honoured and there was a quiet day. The
games resumed the next day but it was a very bad
experience for the Kenya team.
Volunteers: Our volunteers have a
total of 624 hours to date; but did
you know that one of our fellow
retiree, Larry Kimura, residing in BC,
has accumulated 160 hours building
duplexes in Courtenay, BC called the
Piercy Complex. They finished 3
duplexes (6 units) this past July for 6
deserving families (mostly single
mom's with kids). Kudos to you Larry!!
CELEBRATORY EVENTS: Three very meaningful events were celebrated this year that I know of:
Ted & Deanne Psiurski celebrated Don & Celine Gartner celebrated Kaz Shimozawa celebrated

TIDBITS – DID YOU KNOW?
Swimmer: Mike Heath-Eaves trained

swimmer, a sport he began in Calgary
25 years ago. He managed to win four
top ten medals (that's in the World) in
the longer free style events including
the 3K open water, in his age group.
Congratulations!!
To all those who have celebrated birthdays and anniversaries this past year, we wish
you health, wealth and happiness now and throughout all the years to come. Happy

bountiful 2015!

who assisted Husky with the development of a new website
for retirees only. Husky has provided AON Hewitt with only
the pertinent data so they can populate the site and this will
have direct links to all benefit related sites ensuring high
standards of privacy and security. By now, you would all have
received a letter with information of the new website,
explaining the processes, and a new URL to use when accessing
the new website and all pertinent phone nos. The new website
was launched on July 1, 2014.
