by Marc Frommer (MM#9)

Anyway, it starts off Friday night (actually it started with Cormac and I driving the 3.5 hours there) with a great pasta feed that always has awonderful speaker. This year was no exception since the legendary Dick Beardsley spoke. If you have never heard Dick speak, you shouldmake it your business to do so. Of course, he spoke of the Duel in the Sun race (Boston 1982 when he and Salazar staged an incredible race)but also of his inspirational life. I've heard him speak numerous times now and never get tired of his story. The dinner is also like a familymeeting since there are so many great friends and runners there that I don't get to see often enough.

The weather forecast for the race was not great. When we were driving there, the day was fantastic -- it was in the mid-70s with a brightblue sky -- something we haven't seen in quite a long while. But the forecast for Saturday was rain and very windy with gusts around 20-30mph. Well, as Beardsley said, you can't do anything about the weather and everyone has to deal with it so don't worry. When we woke upSaturday, the forecast turned out to only be 50% correct. There weren't any rain clouds in sight but it was a bit breezy. Cormac and I ateour breakfast and then went off to catch the bus to the start. Now many of you know that I usually operate on Frommer Time, which is a bitdifferent timing scheme than Standard time. I (well, to be fair, we both did) figured we had plenty of time (the buses started at 6AM) tocatch the bus. We left the hotel around 6:15 for the short drive to the bus and saw there were two buses in front of the Selah ConventionCenter. However, after parking the car and walking to the buses, there was a big OOPS (actually some other words were said). There wasn'ta bus in sight. We asked the one remaining volunteer when the next bus was coming and he said next year. After some more choice words,we sweet talked him into giving us a ride to the start. So Hal (the wonderful volunteer), Shadow (his sweet dog), Cormac and I all piled intohis small pickup for the ride. We made it to the start in plenty of time and got ready for the race. Maybe we learned a lesson for next year -- but I wouldn't bet on it.

On to the race. My goal was to use this as a nice last long training run forBoston. I was thinking of starting around 8:15 pace and basically running anevenly paced race. Well, I got to the start and ended up running with the Prezand Hollywood (aka, #1 and #2 or Steve Yee and Chris Warren). They took meout a little faster than I thought I was going to go (around 8:00/mile) but it feltfine. I hung with them for the first 3+ miles but then had to pull off to the sidefor a quick porta-bush stop. I didn't see them again until the finish but I gotback into the 8:00/mile groove and just kind of put it on auto-pilot, chattingwith other Maniacs along the way but mostly just enjoying the scenery. In thepast, I've run the course with a slight negative split since I usually don't start outfast and even though the second half is harder, there is a nice 5K downhillfinish, which I like to push. The same happened this year (1:44:50, 1:43:45) butsince I was going at a faster pace to start I ended up running a bit faster than Iwas planning. The gusty wind was weird and probably didn't have a hugeoverall effect. Sometimes it was a vicious headwind, sometimes a greattailwind, and other times a crosswind.

Turns out it was my fastest Yakima by around 6 minutes. In 2009, I ran this race in 3:34:40 and followed it up two weeks later with myfastest Boston in 3:27:33.

After the race, Cormac and I hightailed it out of there with the obligatory stop at Miner's Big Burgers (yes, they do have a Veggie Burger -- Ifigure they sell less than a dozen a year) for some greasy food and milkshake (as usual, I gained a couple of pounds running this race).

As I said way back at the top, the best part of this race is seeing everyone at the pasta feed and race. What a great community of friends. I'llcertainly be back next year when we are all hoping to celebrate Bob Dolphin's 500th marathon -- it should be my 97th (101st, including myultras)

YAKIMA RIVER CANYON MARATHON (4/2/11) – SELMA,WAThis is one of my favorite marathons by far. It is a bit old-school -- no chips, no other race distance, no bands, nocrowds. Just you running along a gorgeous course with a bunch (around 500) of other runners. And, of course, theRace Directors are the famous and incredible Dolphins -- Bob and Lenore. They know how to stage an event that isfor runners. Lots of multi-marathoners show up for this event from all over the country, especially Maniacs, 50staters, and 100 club members. Someone told me that the average number of marathons/ultras per person was 67(I'm at 91 total so I guess I'm a little above average but we all know that :-).

Here are some possible topics for your short story:• How did you get into running? • What was your life like before running and how has it changed? • What inspired you to become a Maniac? • Have you lost a lot of weight because of running?• What groups or friends have inspired you the most?• What words of thanks would you like to say to the Maniacs?• How have you inspired others through your running?

This is a call out to ALL MANIACS, I want to hear your story!! I know many of you have a great story to tell. Many of youhave great stories of incredible weight loss and many of you have changed lives since you started running. I know some ofyour stories, but I’m sure everyone would like to hear them too. Don’t be shy to tell the story, it will encourage us all andgive us all a little motivation.

Here is what I want you to do, take a few minutes and write out your story, it can be on one main topic or point, or it canbe a summary of how your life has changed! It can also be just words of encouragement or a thank you to the Maniacs asa whole. All I ask is that you keep your story to 500 words or less, basically what I want is a short and simple story of howyour life is different then it was before running!

If you want to share a photo along with your story you can e-mail it to me ([email protected]).

I have set up a very simple form that will only take seconds to fill out. Click on the following link to share your story!

http://marathonfreak.com/mm/mystory.htm

As a military spouse who moves a lot, I depend on running to "introduce"me to the new areas I call home every couple of years. My husband iscurrently deployed in Afghanistan, so running is also my copingtechnique. With many things OUT of my control, such as contact fromhim and details regarding the work he is doing, training IS within mycontrol and frequent marathons/ultras provide measurable goals to worktoward. The Marathon Maniac community has been beyond supportiveboth on the race course and off...thank you!

The following is a statistical update on the growth of the Marathon Maniacs. It may not mean much to you, but I find it very interesting.

"Believe in Yourself"by Erin West (#3484)

I started running as a way to get in shape, but it has given me so much more! I struggled with negative self-esteem all through middle school, and I never felt like I belonged. But when I started running mysophomore year of high school, what other kids said didn't seem to matter anymore because I could runthirteen miles! I had a fantastic bunch of running friends that form a running family that cares about me onand off the road.

After running a few halves, I decided I wanted to run a full marathon before I graduated high school. Iwanted a fantastic race, so I chose the 10-10-10 Chicago Marathon for my first marathon. Luckily, there wasa training group that I joined that ran the race as well. Even though the group was significantly older thanme, they welcomed me like family and gave me a place to belong. Throughout training, I learnedperseverance, commitment, and most importantly, the ability to believe in myself, which was a very newconcept for me. The crowd cheering my name made me feel like a rock star! When I crossed the Chicagofinish line, it was my gold medal moment! My first marathon will always be one of my greatest memories!

A month after Chicago, a group of different runners invited me to join them for the IndianapolisMonumental Marathon. Then I discovered with one more marathon I could qualify for the Maniacs, so arunning club member invited me to run the Dallas White Rock Marathon with them to qualify! Runningthese marathons finally ran my self-doubt into the ground. Running has taught me that most limitationsare self-imposed and anything can be accomplished with hard work, dedication, and the will to succeed.

Following this amazing fall, I had a very rough winter. My mother and grandfather became very ill, in addition to my own surgery. It is amazing howmuch being a Maniac helped me through it. I always say, "I am a Marathon Maniac, so I can do this!", whether its relating to getting back in torunning, taking care or someone else, or balancing school on top of everything. Even though coming back from surgery is difficult, I have thementality that I did it once, I can do it again.

This spring, I have to give a salutatorian speech at graduation, and I know I will mention becoming a marathon maniac! As I prepare to go to theUniversity of Alabama in the fall, I know that my running buddies will always be there for me, even though I will be hundreds of miles away. I willalways look forward to visiting and running with them. I look forward to meeting runners and running marathons anywhere and everywhere!

F R O M T H E E D I T O R …

April was a full month. Here in the northwest most Maniacs had fun in Yakima. And as you wouldexpect the whole country came together in Boston for the granddaddy of all marathons. I knowmany Maniacs can only dream of the Boston Marathon, but those that were lucky enough to get in,it looks as though they had fun! The Oz Marathon in Olathe, Kansas looked like it was a fun a time. And some were disappointed to have to cut there marathon short in St Louis due to heat.

I want to continue to share the stories of the Maniacs. PLEASE send me your story! Tell me about how you got into marathons, tell me why youlove being a part of the Maniacs, tell me about your best race, tell me about your favorite race, tell me about your first marathon, tell me aboutyour great weight loss experience. I've seen the number of stories decrease and I know you have a story to tell!! The month of May starts off witha bang on May 1st as the weather gets warmer and the marathon season swings into full gear. Please send me your photos and lets make this thebest running club in the country!

R H E T O R I C A L R E V E L A T I O N S A N D W ( R I T E S ) …

Hiya Prez,

Man, I’m sad.

Grete Waitz died, Prez, last week. Kind of early. 57.

She didn’t know me, but I got close enough to her to know something worth telling you, Prez, hope you won’t mind. First, some context.

Grete, from Norway, became an honorary New Yorker by winning the New York City Marathon as an unknown, and then…winning it an unbelievable eight moretimes between 1978and 1988. Over time, she agreed to help personally with one of the dozens of other Central Park runs the New York Road Runners Club hosts every year.

Well, I grew up near NYC, and so besides the Maniacs, the only other running club I’m a member of is the New York Road Runners Club. So, I ran Grete’s race acouple of times, and one day, curious about her, I walked around in the finish area near her after a race, just near enough to hear her talk with people, but didnot interrupt her myself. What I saw was something different from what celebrities sometimes do. She took time with people, with an unusual deference, kindness, and graciousness. She was, in a word, sweet to people.

Some of us die young, Prez. But 57? 57.

She Looked much younger than her age, too. Just like me, Prez.

Yee?

Life is short, and for some of us, shorter than others, and you know what, Steve?

I have started to go to sleep each night lately reflecting on what made today special. And then I have started to think about something to make tomorrow special, maybe different, maybe even memorable, maybe even just something little.

Because maybe I won’t have as many days as I might have thought, who knows.

Ten years seems like a pretty long time, but there are only about 3,650 individual days in ten years, and that doesn’t seem like so many, especially when I thinkabout how many I have misplayed by being worried or anxious, or being short-tempered, or unnecessarily negative towards somebody, any worthless stuff likethat.

I don’t know, Prez. I wish I could go back and change a bunch of things I have done. Now, I am glad when I hear someone old say they would not change anythingabout their lives. They mean something different: they are being grateful, and content, and humble about things in general. That is wonderful, and they areinspiring.

I know they do not mean to say they did not make mistakes.

I mean this: we have a short life, and we ought to treasure our days greatly. Each one is … priceless.

And being a celebrity, and a champion, and some-kinda-marathon-maniac, did not protect Waitz from a shorter life than you would hope sweet people wouldhave.

So, when I am done, it sure would be nice to leave a legacy like hers. Because I am convinced that people who knew her are not cherishing her brilliant nine NYCMarathon victories.

They are thinking about her sweetness.

Huh. Now when I think about the asylum page columns of our accomplishments, I have already started to make believe there is one more column I want peopleto think would be checked off for me there, Prez. Guess I better get to work on that.

One more thing, for what it’s worth, Yee. Yours would already be checked off. Thanks for being you, Prez.

Luvya,[email protected]
