CH Marine Launches 40th RunaboutNew York Jets owner, Woody Johnson devised the perfect play — Endzone, his custom-built Runabout

In October 2005, CH Marine christened its 40th Shelter Island Runabout, marking an

important milestone for the com-pany and signaling the continued prestige of this distinguished fleet. Our talented shipwrights handcrafted Endzone, a 38´ Shelter Island Runabout, for New York Jets NFL Football Team owner, Woody Johnson. Endzone features a Majestic Blue hull, U-shaped cockpit seating area complete with Buff Ultraleather cushions, varnished teak transom, and Yanmar 315 HP diesel engines.

For nearly 25 years, CH Marine has been a leader in custom- designed and built yachts. At our Shelter Island location, our team of shipwrights design and create each one of our boats in exacting detail. From the finest teak available, to the best en-gines, every aspect of each yacht is configured to your specifications. Our clients have come to expect this high level of quality from CH Marine and we deliver this quality by producing pleasure boats that are meticulously constructed and beautifully detailed.

You could be cruising in your new, custom-built Shelter Island Runabout this Spring.

We have a few openings in our 2006 schedule for launch this Spring. CH Marine President, Peter Needham, is available to personally assist you in discussing your perfect yacht. Contact him directly by phone at 631-749-0856 ext. 11 or by e-mail: [email protected].

Nicknamed the “Tailgate”, a large portion of the transom will hinge down to become a swim platform providing easy on and off access for either an inflatable, mopeds, a wheelchair or divers. At anchor in your favorite harbor, you’ll be watching sunsets at the water’s edge with the tailgate down.

Twin inboard die-sels, driving surface piercing propellers that are tucked up in ventilated tunnels, will increase efficiency and top speed, and decrease fuel con-sumption. Since the props are recessed inside the hull tunnels there is added protection against striking submerged objects. The draft is a mere 23˝. Power calls for a pair of Yanmar LP series diesels rated at 260 HP each that should yield a cruising speed of 44 mph with a top speed in the vicinity of 50

mph. Optional power offered will be a pair of Yanmar 315 HP diesels that should provide a cruise speed in the neighborhood of 48 mph, and when the seas allow it, this configuration should top out at a breathtaking 55 mph!

The trunk cabin’s shortened proportion, in length, along with a recessed foredeck, will pro-

vide an excellent walking area for stand-up fishing or working the anchor. In the cockpit there are two ultra-comfortable Stidd chairs along with lounge type seating over the engine boxes. A pair of bench seats aft will

also be available. The helm is being designed around the Raymarine “C” series integrated GPS/radar/chartplotter and fishfinder. The Raymarine “C” series features a large color display and the ability to overlay the radar picture on top of the chartplotter display.

Down below there’s a stand-up head with handheld shower, a generously sized V berth that converts to a double and a suitably sized hanging locker. There’s even a galley complete with AC/DC refrigeration, sink and a counter top stove.

The equipment and quality of construction will be completed to CH Marine’s exacting standards. In the tradition of all CH Marine yachts, the ride should be remarkably smooth and quiet. We expect to run sea trials on the SI 30 early this Summer. She will make her debut at the Fall boat shows beginning with the Newport International Boat Show in Sep-tember. For more information about the SI 30 or other yachts in our fleet, contact CH Marine at 631-749-0856 or e-mail us at [email protected].

From the inception of the Runabout design CH Marine has been the front-runner in the dayboat/picnic speed

arena. We have held the top speed category for many years by carefully controlling completed boat weights, through our material selection process, and by offering powerful engine packages. In the fall of 2002, we were asked to build our first diesel powered Runabout. At first we were reluctant to give up the 50+ mph speeds we were used to achieving with gas engines but the prospect of reduced fuel consumption and a predicted 48 mph full throttle setting enticed us. After our third season of building diesel-powered Runabouts, we can report that the changeover has expanded the already legendary capabilities of this remarkable boat.

Selecting the best diesel engineWe chose the Yanmar/Mercruiser propulsion system primarily for its high horsepower-to-weight ratio and RPM range. Additionally, Yanmar has a strong reputation in the marine field and offers factory trained service technicians in most coastal communities. Their diesel engines are offered in two versions for the Runabout. The 6LPA-DTZP model has a crankshaft output of 260 HP at 3800 rpm. The 6LPA-STZP version puts out 315 HP at 3800 rpm. Both power plants weigh about nine pounds less apiece than the gas V-8s we were accustomed to using. Exhaust exits underwater through the propeller. This exhaust system change reduced noise and allowed us to free up some space in the engine compartment by removing the water lift mufflers.

The first diesel powered Runabout We didn’t comprehend the full impact changing from gas to diesel would have on fuel economy until we delivered the first diesel-powered Runabout to her owners. On the trip from Shelter Island to Osterville, MA, some 90 miles to the northeast, we held our speed to a very conservative 30 mph, not wanting to overstress the engines during break-in. When we arrived in port three hours later we noticed that the fuel gauge had barely moved off of the full position.

Thinking that the gauge was broken we immediately arranged with the local shipyard for a replacement. The new gauge still showed that the tank was nearly full. After a couple of additional outings in their new boat the owners decided to refuel. To everyone’s surprise they were only able to squeeze 50 gallons of fuel in the tank. The fuel gauge had been working properly all along!

Diesels in the real worldDiesel engines in eight Runabouts have proven to be fast, powerful, and economical to operate.

In real world use, the diesel-powered Runabouts have an average fuel consumption of about 10 gallons/hour or roughly 3 miles per gallon at 30 mph. At this speed the Runabout has a cruising range in excess of 500 miles.

Underwater exhaustWith the underwater exhaust system fumes are virtually non-existent. The Runabout is as quiet as her gas-powered counterpart. Even with a diesel engine, the noise level, when

measured at normal cruising rpm ranges, is still lower than the noise level of competitive boats.

Experience countsCH Marine has been building custom yachts for nearly 25 years. Every boat we build starts with an owners desire for the perfect yacht. The propulsion package is one of the many choices we offer to custom tailor each new boat for her owner. We will provide our many years of experience and help guide you through the choice of diesel or gas engines for your next motorboat.

Billy Joel’s New Yacht Custom built 57-footer Vendetta, docks in Oyster Bay, Long Island

Atwo-year collaboration between CH Marine and musician Billy Joel resulted in this beautiful, one-of-a-kind, 57-footer powered by a pair of

1,300 HP MAN diesels. Marine Architect Doug Zurn collaborated to design Vendetta, a Jazz Age-inspired throwback to the glory days of commuter yachting.

Just as wealthy capitalists did during the ’20s, Joel plans to pilot Vendetta on regular Gold Coast runs from his Oyster Bay, Long Island home to Manhattan. The boat’s sleek design will provide a quick, smooth ride through the often short chop of the Long Island Sound.
