Charlie Powell had for a long time had the dream of creating a beautiful wild garden where unhappy people could come to mend. Like many of us life has presented her with some painfully challenging elements and her places of solace where hope has been rekindled and restored has always been in gardens. Recently as a professional gardener with her own business, she has been able to underpin her strong belief that the outdoor life provides a constant flow of opportunities to top up on the feel good factor. Luckily for Lindengate, Sian Chattle, the other Lindengate co- founder on the stairs was looking for just such a challenge based on a very similar dream. As a teacher of over 20 years and undoubted excellence she has seen first-hand that most young people leaving school with mental health issues have to face a yawning gap. The lack of empathetic provision leads to so many being left unsupported, misunderstood, isolated and subsequently unable to exist happily within a community. Her passion for developing eco practices in the school environment has provided her with many situations where Bucks Mind has been commissioned to deliver Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training across the county. The original concept of MHFA was that people should be taught how to perform basic ‘first aid’ for those exhibiting signs of mental health distress, just as they are commonly taught first aid for physical afflictions. The training aims to increase mental health literacy, reduce stigma and increase supportive reactions in terms of mental health. A principle of MHFA is early intervention to prevent an escalation of mental ill health. Mental ill health is the single largest cause of disability in the UK, contributing up to 22.8% of the total burden, compared to 15.9% for cancer and 16.2% for cardiovascular disease. The wider economic costs of mental illness in England have been estimated at £105.2 billion each year. This includes direct costs of services, lost productivity at work and reduced quality of life. It is estimated that one worker in six has a mental health problem - almost 5 million of Britain’s 29 million workers. Nationally, 13.8 million working days were lost in 2012 to work related stress, depression and anxiety which are now the largest cause of sickness related absence (Bucks Director of Public Health Annual Report 2012). The costs of mental ill health to British businesses are estimated to be over £1000 per employee every year or almost £30 billlion across the UK economy. This is mostly in lost production through staff being off work or underperforming at work. Most companies have an employee trained in first aid, but mental ill health is the most prevalent cause of illness among people of working age. Appointing someone as a mental health expert or training a number of people in awareness could make a significant difference to employee wellbeing. Future costs of mental ill health are forecast to double in real terms over the next 20 years. The No Health Without Mental Health supporting document: The economic case for improving efficiency and quality in mental health (Department of Health 2011) provides evidence that some of this cost could be reduced by a greater focus on whole population mental health promotion and prevention. Bucks Mind will have two instructors so that we are able to deliver Adult MHFA and Youth MHFA training to organisations across the county. The Adult MHFA course is a 12 hour training course which improves mental health literacy and helps people to recognise the signs and symptoms of adults experiencing mental health problems. Youth MHFA is designed specifically for those people that teach, work, live with or care for young people aged 11-18 years. This course differs from Adult MHFA by focusing on specific issues affecting young people. We plan to deliver Adult MHFA training with a qualified instructor in December. In the New Year, we will have a training programme in place for Adult MHFA and Youth MHFA. More information about forthcoming training dates will be available on our website. Everyone can help to support Bucks Mind from simple things like putting up a poster to raise awareness, having a home or office collection tin to raising money through a sponsored event.

NEW... Assertiveness GroupBucks Mind are in the process of setting up an Assertiveness and Positive Self-Esteem Group at High Wycombe. It will run on a weekly basis over four weeks, on Saturday mornings, and will commence as soon as we have a viable up-take.

The group will be available to adults over the age of 18 who are struggling with issues regarding low confidence, low self-esteem and difficulties in asserting themselves appropriately and effectively. Referrals can be made to Sue on 01494 463364.

There is no fee, but any donations towards refreshments and running costs will be gratefully received!

On 11th July Bucks Mind celebrated its centenary with a party for staff, service users and volunteers. The party was held in the Occulus Room at the AVDC offices in Aylesbury. We had a delicious buffet and entertainment by a saxophonist and a magician. We also held a Grand Raffle (see below) which raised over £600. All the prizes were kindly donated by local businesses.

The board of trustees would like to thank the Profile Group for arranging the event, plus thank the many volunteers who helped out on the day. A great time was had by all who attended.

Centenary Party

Chesham StreetCollection On Saturday 4th October a collection was held outside Sainsbury’s in Chesham which raised £100.33.

Julia Thornton would like to thank Sainsbury’s, Judy Harris, Jean Booth, Imogen Flack & her friend Rachel who kindly gave their time to help with the collection.

Grand Prize WinnerHannah and Adam Young, Bucks Mind Sessional Workers, who recently got married in August, won the first prize of an Audi TT for the weekend at the Centenary Celebrations.

Hannah was so completely shocked at winning she didn’t hear her name being called for the winning ticket; but when it finally dawned on her that she had won, she was very pleasantly surprised because she had never won anything like that before.

They picked up the Audi TT a week after their wedding and spent the weekend picking up friends and family; taking them for a spin in between visiting coffee shops. Hannah said ‘we had so much fun, it was a really wonderful way to start our married lives together’.

Bucks Mind is supportingthe Five Ways to Wellbeing

Did you know, research shows that happier people can add at least 7½ years to their life?! The key to this happiness is thought to be linked to our wellbeing; feeling good and enjoying our day to day lives.

The Five Ways to Wellbeing (5WTW) philosophy is based on positive psychology and brings together a combination of things that have all been found to improve the way we feel within ourselves. The five ways that can help boost our wellbeing are: Connect, Be Active, Take Notice, Keep Learning and Give. Something as simple as catching up with an old friend or trying out a new recipe can have a positive impact on how we feel.

At Bucks Mind we are currently two weeks into a series of six sessions based upon the 5WTW, and we have seen a really positive reaction. Each one hour session is focused on exploring one of the five ways, and aims to make the participants more consciously aware of their wellbeing and how they may already be using the five ways in their life. The course is also about encouraging people to actively seek out and make small changes to their day to day lives using the five ways model, which could have a big impact on their wellbeing.

This first course is running in Chesham and has already looked at ways to connect with friends, family or neighbours and has found the participants getting active with pedometers whilst travelling on a virtual train journey around Sun House! Next week’s session will find the group deep in meditation and believe it or not by the end of the six weeks, all attendees will be able to count in Japanese!

Every attendee on the course has also been given their own five ways diary, so that they can create achievable goals for themselves and follow their progress throughout the course.

Although only two weeks in we have been thrilled to see our clients completing their diaries and contributing ideas at each session. We are looking forward to seeing how the course has positively impacted on them at the end of the six weeks.

Unshackled Arts ProjectIn association with Bucks Mind

The Unshackled Arts Project is a new community arts and mental health project that aims to promote confidence, skills, self-esteem and positive mental health. The project offers an artistic platform as a springboard for people to move on in their artistic progression, onto other forms of community involvement, learning, and training.

We aim to increase social inclusion and support diversity, prevention and wellbeing, by using the creative arts as a tool from which participants can focus and learn from. The Art Gallery also helps raise funds and create sales for the artists and for charity.

The group is held on Thursdays, at Bucks Mind’s premises in High Wycombe. It currently consists of around 10 people and has the opportunity for community link up for those unable to attend. Sessions are open from 10.00am until 4.00pm.

Referrals and further enquiries to be sent to: Steve Wassall, Bucks Mind, Unshackled Arts Project260 Desborough Road, High Wycombe, Bucks. HP11 2QR
