Newsletter March 20th 2018 WELCOME - Summer is finally here, Whitechapel is sizzling and exam season is now finally completed, for most of us. Welcome all to the fifth issue of our Newsletter, another jam-packed edition with plenty of wonderful updates we are proud to share. I hope our BDS1 students are enjoying the start of the glorious and well deserved long summer break - be sure to make the most of it, since the breaks aren’t always so lengthy! There’s also exciting times ahead for our current BDS4 students too with the elective period right around the corner now – I cannot wait to see all the photos from your adventures and hear the stories too. And, of course, a huge congratulation is in order for our newest cohort of qualifying dentists; I am sure I speak for all of us when I say we are so proud of you all. I would also like to take this opportunity to highlight all of our Muslim dental students who are fasting during this holy month of Ramadan, masha Allah to you all – the sense of community amongst you is inspiring, especially impressive since the days are so long and Ramadan has fallen within exam season this year. This will be the final regular issue of this e-Newsletter, since the July edition will be a special end-of-year President’s Newsletter to recap the 2017/18 year as a whole. Yours, Ali Nasser DentSoc President Events Festival of Communities! Pub Quiz! We’ve had a busy term of events! We had our loupes fayre, where students had the opportunity to try out a variety of loupes companies as well as receiving fantastic discounts! The winner from the loupes raffle will be announced in July so keep your eyes peeled! We also had a fundraising ‘pub quiz’ event for our finalists graduation ball with an auction for amazing prizes like a pair of loupes, a massage and even some of Dr. Sufraz’s own home baked goods! Thank you to all who came and supported it and good luck to our finalists in organising the night!

INTERNAL NEWS - Its been a couple of months since we last updated you on all things DentSoc, so here’s whats happened since last time. We’d like to welcome the new Interim Dean, Professor Irene Leigh, to Whitechapel. Professor Leigh takes over from Professor Wong, who we would like to thank for all his work

representing Barts over the past year. New DentSoc President, Ameen Hussein, announced that his new Staff President for 2018/19 will be Dr. Jason Berry. This leads us on to let you

know about the current DentSoc elections; voting closes tomorrow (Thursday 14th June)

at 4pm. There are many roles contested, including two new roles, EDSA Rep and Charities Social Sec. We wish all those running the best of luck! Led by Debra Chow and Stephanie Yeung, and supported by Sarah Murray and Dr Cassandra Lewis, Barts dental students took part in the Festival of Communities Oral Health Promotion Day, giving oral hygiene advice to residents of the local area. Finally, we’d like to congratulate the Barts 1st Cricket XI, with Rahul Bajaria and Savan Desai on the team, for winning a record-breaking 5th UH Cup Final in a row!

CELEBRATING STUDENT SUCCESS - DentSoc had great success during the awards season at Barts and QMUL. We won three top awards at separate ceremonies. We won ‘Society of the Year’ at the BL Association Awards, a Gold Medal Award at the Excellence Awards, and our President, Ali Nasser, won ‘Committee Member of the Year’ for the whole of QMUL. Our Munch and Learn collaboration with Dentalks has been shortlisted as one of the finalists in the Future of Dentistry Awards.

Congratulations to Victoria Sampson, who won the undergraduate essay prize from the British Society of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology. James Coughlan won ‘Societies Person of the Year’ at the BL Association Awards for the success this year of The Dental Mirror. While they might not be students, we want to celebrate Dr. Simon Rawlinson for being shortlisted for both ‘Academic Support Award’ and ‘Learning Champion Award’, and Jacqueline Trappitt for being shortlisted for ‘Support Staff Member of the Year’. They both do a fantastic job supporting us in our studies, and we’re delighted this was recognised by the university. Our year reps were also recognised for their hard work at the awards!

CHARITIES - After months of fundraising, 9 students, Dr Roy Woodhoo and Teereth’s mum did their skydive for Dentaid, the chosen charity of DentSoc. It looked like a fantastic experience, but most importantly all raising money for a fantastic cause. They raised an impressive £2748 (and counting), which Dentaid uses to help make and refurbish dental equipment for countries where it is in short supply, as well as to train local dentists to help rural communities.

It has been a busy term for Dentalks! We held our final academic event of the year, a viva practise session for third and fourth years that had a great turnout. The first of its kind, the viva session was led by Dr Ahmed Din, an orthodontic registrar at the Royal London and focused on how student performance could be maximised. The viva successfully fulfilled the aim of providing sessions  that will support dental students from all year groups.   In other big news, Dentalks held their annual AGM recently and have now fully elected their new committee. It was great to see so much

interest in the society with many of the roles being contested for! We wish the new committee every success and hope that they can build on the society’s great momentum next year. If you have any feedback or any ideas for events or how the society could be improved, please get into contact with us through our social media platforms. We would love to hear what you think!

ARTICLEONE:“Forupto42%oftheUK’spopulation*,summer

veryoftenmeansincreasedtoothpain”*42% of the UK’s population. Millward Brown tracking study 2016. Do your patients’ summer preparation regimes include protection against teeth sensitivity? Your patients plan their summer activities and holidays well in advance, in order to obtain the maximum enjoyment, of the best times that summer has to offer. They stock up on sunscreen, sunhats and ice cream for the freezer! But do they prepare their teeth against the painful effects of summer too? Sunburn can easily be prevented by applying high factor sunscreen before sun exposure, but what about tooth sensitivity? Rather than being able to relax and enjoy the all too brief spell of good weather and summer treats, patients who suffer with dentine hypersensitivity (DHS) have to stop and decide if sharing a refreshing drink with friends is worth all the sensitive tooth pain. They could end up avoiding summer treats such as ice cream and cold drinks for fear of sensitive tooth pain, but they needn’t have to. THE solution for sensitive teeth Colgate® Sensitive Pro-Relief™ (CSPR) toothpaste with Pro-Argin® Technology offers clinically proven instant* - and long lasting - relief from DHS1,2 It also has the recommended fluoride level for caries prevention (1450ppm F) 3 and it tastes great. 4 Packs a punch · Blocks the pathway to pain instantly* – 60.5% reduction in sensitivity from the first use1 * · Delivers long-lasting pain relief – 80.5% reduction in sensitivity after 8 weeks2,** ·Provides superior dentine tubule occlusion: 88% occlusion vs 50% with a novamin/sodium fluoride Technology5,# Preparing teeth for the summer season Colgate® Sensitive Pro-Relief™ toothpaste is clinically proven to work in seconds.6 · It locks in calcium and phosphate, occluding exposed dentine tubules. This prevents external stimuli from reaching dentine tubule fluid and causing pain.6,7 · It forms a calcium-rich layer on the tooth and in the dentine tubules. This is resistant to acids found in food and drink. Instant and long lasting sensitivity pain relief starts with your recommendation. Encourage your patients to start using Colgate® Sensitive Pro-Relief™ toothpaste now in preparation for the summer season! Brushing twice a day with Colgate® Sensitive Pro-Relief™, even when symptoms dissipate, will provide them with long-lasting protection against the sensitivity triggers that summer brings.
